great performance; only works in AF mode with high-end Nikon cameras

for what it is, it is phenomenal. I bought it because it was advertised as a D-series lens (which I needed, as I have a Nikon1 with the FT-1 adapter), but it is actually a pre-D AF series lens. I cannot auto-focus this lens because I have the wrong camera (camera needs to have an auto-focus motor integrated into the camera).

Now on to the awesome features. It has 1:1 magnification at its closest focus distance, and the image is very contrasty and with great accutance, resolution, and color reproduction, all the way to 2.8. Color fringing is minimal up to F4, and noticeable but easily correctable in post at f2.8. Focus throw is a respectable 180 degrees, but I prefer a bit more for accurate focus, especially in macro focal distances. Image resolution and accutance is phenomenal at non-macro focus distances. This is definitely a dual-purpose macro lens and portrait/near-telephoto lens.

The optics of this lens and the 105mm F2.8 D series is identical. If you are on a budget and are okay with manual focus in case your camera is not compatible, then this will be great! If you need auto-focus, and have the right camera to use it, then get the D-series version of this lens. Either way, I hope you will be as happy with this lens as I am!

Solidly Built, Tack Sharp

While this version (f2.8 AF-D) doesn't have the same number of elements and groups as the newer (AF-S) version, and it's not as quiet, it's still among the sharpest of Nikon's lenses. Originally designed for film cameras, it has transitioned nicely to digital. I get very sharp details at 1:1, and the images are stunning. Right now, I'm using it with my D750, and although the autofocus is not as fast as the newer models, and since I don't use it for action, it delivers quite adequate focusing speed. I also have several other "D" autofocus lenses (20mm f2.8, 24mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4), and they're all part of my shooting battery.Lire l'avis complet...

Superb legacy lens for digital cameras

This is an excellent macro lens, overlooked by many. It is a fraction of the cost of a new Nikon lens and works just as well. Autofocus is not up to today's standards but you will be using manual focus for macro anyway.Lire l'avis complet...

Great lens. Super crisp images. Tips for D3100 use.

Great lens. But you should know that when using a D3100 or any model which doesn't have a focus motor built into the camera body that this lens will only work in manual focus mode. Super crisp macro pictures, and really nice for portraits too. Real metal housing. Feels so well made compared to the cheaper plastic lenses the camera came with. When you first mount it onto a D3100, it should be set to f32. After installing it, slide the little lock switch to the orange locked position. Then the camera body can tell the lens what aperture to use without seeing any error messages. I usually put it in Aperture mode, and manually pick an aperture that suits the lighting conditions, then focus manually. Look at speed to see if it makes sense for what you're doing. It has a pretty narrow focal range when taking macro shots. But that's normal for all macro lenses like this. It comes in handy on portraits where you might want the background to be a soft focus.

Overall it's a really nice lens, and I don't mind not having the autofocus feature on my D3100 too much.

These pictures were taken in normal daylight, hand-holding the camera. A yellow jacket and a Daddy Longlegs.

FOR A OLDER MODEL LENSE IT WORKS GREAT WITH MY NEW CAMERA.

Lense is NOT compatible with my NIKON D3500. It will only work in the AF mode. It takes great UP-CLOSE pictures as well distance zoomed-in.

105mm ... so 105 out of 100

Great lens. Super sharp, great portrait length, good macro (micro in Nikon lingo), and works on both FX and DX. I think it's a great buy, and one of my top 10. Most lenses rating higher than this IMO are much more expensive. In all around ratings I would put this at about 4.7 or 4.8 out of 5.Lire l'avis complet...

Works great on my Sony A7s & A7RII

This lens has great color reproduction. Even with being fitted with an adapter, it manages to still focus at the macro level without a problem, all within a compact size!

Macro + Portrait = Love.

This lens is not only a nice lens for portraits (at f/2.8 you get good bokeh because it is 100mm) but it is also a macro lens. Bugs, flowers, stamps, coins, you name it. Something small pops into view with crystal clarity when you take its image with this lens. Comparable to the 100mm macro lens for Canon.
Using a macro lens gives better results than extension tubes. Once you get a real macro lens, you will thumb your nose at the extension tubes from that day forward.

Cheaper alternative

This lens has the older focusing technology but the images are super sharp. Excellent bokeh! Bought the lens to use for wedding close up photography (rings, favors, etc...). This was a much cheaper alternative to the new 105mm 2.8 VR. Close up photography with this lens requires a tripod and manual focus but the results are exceptional. On top of being great for close ups, the lens is excellent for potraits. It focuses fast and the images are sharp. Lire l'avis complet...
