Nikon Nikkor AF D 28-80 mm F/3.5-5.6 AF-D Lens.

The Nikon Nikkor AF 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 D lens is Nikon's best kept secret, in terms of sharpness, contrast, vividness, and saturation, or overall image quality. It's been a kit lens since its inception, but do not underestimate its look, feel, weight, and plastic-construction. Yes, it's lightweight, plastic-made, but it delivers devastating (humorously speaking) blows to any opponents of its genres. In fact, most of Nikon Nikkor's higher-end lenses, which cost 10 times, as much, or more, have nothing on it, in terms of image quality. Once you try it out, you will be hooked.

The lens is so awesome that, I often shoot weddings with it, particularly during the receptions. Those who don't really know its powers, simply dismissed it, based on look, weight, and feel. Actually, I love the look, feel, and weight. The focusing speed is fairly fast, and you also get very close-focus distancing, which will surprise you. If you're traveling, it's a must-have to carry, especially for its weight.

This lens is RIDICULOUSLY sharp!

This mighty lens has been produced in several variations, with the latest, being the "AF-G" type, which comes in all-black, or black and gray. I prefer the older AF-D version, with the aperture ring, along with the larger focus ring. I'm a semi-Pro Photographer, I do various genres of photography, and it's always in my bag. No matter where you get one, it's always affordable. I have three of this magic lens, poised to buy a fourth one, as we speak. I'm sure it's a matter of time before they become highly sought-after, rare to find, especially in (NM) near mint condition. Nowadays, you can easily get one here on eBay for about $60-$80, ranging from excellent to near mint condition. After you read this review, I'm sure you'll grab, as many, as possible, save them for whenever they become rarities. You will be the owner of a real gem of a lens.

Do not count on Nikon to inform you that, this lens is magic, or one of the best it's ever produced, and the reason is simple: "They want you to keep buying their more expensive, higher-end lenses, so they can make more money." Oops, did I just let the SECRET out?

"Crappy" little lens? Not!

This thing is all plastic, including the mount. You might think that's a problem, but really it's a benefit because the result is an extremely light lens. I have had no durability problems, but I am admittedly very careful with my equipment. I use it on a D610 for indoor basketball, family activities and more. The 28-80 range is handy for getting the right shot and the images are sharp. You can spend a lot more money to get a midrange zoom lens, but if you are shooting a Nikon that does not require AF-S to autofocus, this little gem is a no-brainier.Lire l'avis complet...

all plastic construction on the outside with good glass on the inside

this is one of those lenses that contains 8 elements of fine Nikon glass shrouded in an all plastic container. It costs less, weighs less but performs well. There is no internal motor in the lens for focusing so your camera must have a built in motor of it's own which eliminates all of the new entry level Nikon DSLR's.Lire l'avis complet...

Sharp and lightweight alternative lens for SLR or mirrorless cameras.

I use this with an adapter on a Fuji X-E1 as an inexpensive mid-range zoom (42-120mm 35mm equivalent on aps-c sensors). It's light weight and VERY sharp, particularly at f5.6 and above. It's manual focus which isn't a problem because I use it for mostly landscape photography but in a pinch it would make a great portrait lens too. Low price on Ebay and versatility make this a bargain lens to keep in your camera bag or on your back-up camera.Lire l'avis complet...

Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6D Lens

Although this is a discontinued model for Nikon, it is an excellent lens that's available on eBay at reasonable price.

It provides an excellent zoom range at an almost 3 to 1 range. The model I won at auction is is mint condition and, as expected of a Nikkor lens, produces excellent results. If you are looking for an inexpensive lens for your Nikon film or digital SLR, this is a good choice.

A large amount of my photos are of small objects (jewelry, coins, watches, glassware, etc.) and this lens has the range to make photographing small objects of varying sizes easy. The amount of detail shown is excellent and potential buyers can clearly see small details of the items being sold.

The lens would also be an excellent choice for landscape photography and allows you to bring far away objects up close at 80mm. At 28mm it is wide enough to capture an entire museum display in a single picture. It would make an excellent all-around lens for a relatively small price.

Finding a reliable eBay seller of this lens was fairly easy and I shopped several sellers and waited for a deal I thought was fairly priced. Be sure to check prior sales of similar items to get an idea of the price range other buyers thought was fair for the item.

If you are new to digital photography, this is an excellent choice to expand the range of your kit lens with what amounts to a medium telephoto lens that gives excellent results at a bargain price.

Vintage Nikon

Adding another to my collection of vintage Nikon glass. Actually, I already acquired this same lens, as a "G" version, but had to have this one with the aperture ring, to satisfy my old Nikon film days, plus gain the ability to use the lens manually. Not to mention, but these inexpensive, plastic body lens actually have excellent optics - just handle with care, or possibly break off the plastic "F" mount.Lire l'avis complet...

Great budget short zoom!

This is a Great budget short zoom! While it has a plastic mount, not metal, it’s still a well made lens. It’s very lightweight for all day comfort, and tack sharp, like you’d expect from Nikon. It has great close focus, and the ability to reach slightly distant subjects with it’s 80mm zoom. Plus it works on most Nikon AF film SLR’s, DX and FX format digitals. It also provides nice overlap with Nikon’s excellent 70-300mm FX VR zoom. Very low price on eBay makes this a can’t miss deal! Lire l'avis complet...

Suprising picture quality from a low-priced, lighweight piece of cheap-looking plastic. Have faith!

Probably the lens needs little introduction; on the Internet it is a relatively well-known Nikon "cheap gem". It does look and feel flimsy and crappy. Its low-grade plastic bears no comparison to the material of AF/AD-D or modern (motorized) Nikon lenses. Focusing or zooming gives a somewhat scary plastic-to-plastic friction feel - nothing to do with classic 'silky' helicoids of older MFs or even the smooth working of modern better-grade lenses.
On top, this particular version has a slim focus ring - rather ugy and not too practical to manipulate. The 58mm filter thread is not common and discourages bying a new set of accessories singly for this lens. If I were to wish for one improvement, that would be a non-revoving front end to spare me a real headache with polarizers and other directional filters.
*However*, it works quite smoothly on my D700 and the optics are very clear. It produces pictures sharp and with minimal deformation - certainly up to and above my amateur standards. The focus is rapid and accurate (at least the speciment I bought). It is also practical to carry around: very light and, for its zoom and apperture range, reasonably sized (not too big; not too compact, either).
In conclusion, at this price I am very-very pleased with the 28-80mm f/3.5-f/5,6. I certainly recommend adding one to your Nikon glass, even just to keep as an easily portable all-aroud backup lens. I added a centre-pinch cap (more practical) and a standard UV filter to protect my investment :)

This is a fantastic camera packed with modern features.

Nikon put all their tricks into this camera before concentrating fully to Digital SLR's. This is the first thing i grab everytime i go out. My D80 proved to be quite heavy and the kit lens just dont cut it. In addition, the clarity and the pureness of film surely trumps DSLR production anytime. A brilliant camera as a main or second body for beginners or pros alike.Lire l'avis complet...

Light, sharp, inexpensive

This lens is a hidden gem. Lightweight, sharp optics. Will work with Most FX and DX Nikon DSLRs.
Autofocus only works if camera body has the mechanical coupling for D lenses. My D750 will autofocus; my D5500 won't, but autoexposure works. It also focuses extremely close for not being a "macro" lensLire l'avis complet...
