One of Nikon's best

This was Nikon's last professional grade camera before the F4s, which has more bells and whistles. I have both cameras. [I bought the F4 because of age-affected eyesight--it has focus confirmation and built-in diopter adjustments, but glory be, still traditional controls--not a screen with menus--as well as three metering modes. It, as does the F3, takes all Nikon SLR lenses except perhaps some more recent digital only designs, a reason many have preferred Nikon--lens mounts don't change with each new camera design.] I still prefer the F3 for ease of use and the fact that the viewfinder shows full frame. The viewfinder can be exchanged for others as well as the focusing screen. Viewing magnifiers with diopter adjustment are available. I still enjoy the F4, and it is my choice when I occasionally use flash. [I am planning to buy again the F2 the FM, and even possibly the F and maybe even the FA and the EL2.]Lire l'avis complet...

Still a Great Camera

The Nikon F5 is well known as one of the toughest and most capable 35mm film cameras. For me, coming back to this body after more than 20 years with high-end DSLR's is not a disappointment. The metering is accurate, the focusing is fast and accurate, and the ergonomics are excellent, with controls falling to hand as they should. The operation is quieter and smoother than some DSLR's because of the damped mirror assembly. The weight is substantial, balancing large lenses nicely. And newer Nikon lenses operate as they should for VR and metering. The motor does use AA batteries quickly, and getting a battery tray without corrosion is important, but this is still a great camera. Lire l'avis complet...

Excellent!

This camera is awesome. If you’ve ever shot film before and now shoot digital you should get this camera. If you’ve never shot film before you should get this camera. I started with film (canon AE1 program). Shooting digital began to get boring, so I decided to research a film camera and the Nikon F5 is what I to be one the best 35mm film cameras made. So I searched eBay a found one for $225.00. I thought that was a great deal for a full frame professional camera and I was already shooting with a Nikon D7100, so I had lenses. After taking a photo walk to my local harbor and using the built in metering system in the camera to gage my exposure, I quickly went through one roll of film. What a difference from digital. No review of the images, just hope you got it right. Man was that exciting. Then I had to spend more money to get the pictures developed, it seems like it took forever to get the email from The Dark Room that my pictures were completed. Boy was I afraid to look but I did and was so happy and satisfied. If you really want to learn photography get a film camera and recommend this one. Here are some of the pictures. No E (electronic aperature) Lenses

This is perhaps the greatest 35mm film camera ever built. I bought a choice one for about 300.00 so I could use my modern FX (full frame) Nikon lenses on 35mm film when I need to. Sadly it & the latest F6 film cameras cannot operate the new Electronic Iris lenses which are most of the latest Nikon Lenses. I found this out the hard way. SOME modern lenses will work but if the lens has 'E' by itself in the description as in;Nikon 24-70mm VR f/2.8 FX AF-S E N ED the lens will fit but it will remain wide open & not stop down. Identifying these lenses is tricky until you do your research. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Learn from my mistake. There are MANY older auto focus Nikkors which work great on the f5. Still probably the greatest film camera ever made; No regrets & the price is only pennies for what you get. If you even occasionally shoot chemical film BUY ONE.Lire l'avis complet...

great nikon 35mm body

great camera, top of the line features for the day, solidly built with some serious heft, feels just like my digital D800--but truthfully this camera takes some of the fun out of shooting film... love that i can use the same kit/lenses/flash as my digital body, but part of what makes film still relevant today is the need to slow down and focus on your subject. this camera just takes most of the hard work out of the equation, but still makes spectacular shots!Lire l'avis complet...

Great pro film camera now available for amazing price

Nikon F3 was Nikon's longest in production camera - made and sold for almost 20 years starting in the 80s. It is a great value camera now and with easy availability of Ai/Ai-s lenses, it is a great value camera system.

It has a good light meter, good crisp lcd display and if you go (recommended) with the HP (highpoint) prism, is great for people like me who wear glasses because the HP prism lets you see the entire frame in the viewfinder without bringing it all the way to the eye. I have the regular prism too (the prisms are interchangeable) and it may be a tad brighter. The split level micro-prism focusing is amazing and easy.

I just use the 50mm f/1.4 Ai-s lens which I bought for around $150 and is a fantastic everyday fast lens.

I have a Leica M-A and it may sound stupid but the F3 is a worthy backup camera and does not feel cheap or flimsy compared to the mighty Leica. I paid a little more to get a like new body and boy was it amazing to shoot. The film advance is buttery smooth and the camera feels nicely balanced in the hand with the 50mm lens.

There is a nifty little multiple exposure lever which makes creating multi-exposures a snap. If you have only done these on smartphone apps, you will love the real way it is done on film. F3 makes it so easy.

To conclude if you want to get into 35mm film and not break the bank, I strongly recommend the F3. If you have any questions, pls do not hesitate to contact me @ribnar on twitter. I am a film fanatic and would love to answer any query.

Earned its reputation as a tank

I'm really enjoying the Nikon F5. It's heavy and bulky, but in the best way possible, if that makes sense - it truly feels like a piece of professional equipment. Other than the primitive Custom Settings Menu, the camera is easy to use - each button generally only does one thing. Fortunately, most of the CSM options are the "set it once and forget it" variety, not things that you need to adjust on a daily basis.

It does a great job of autofocusing with AF and AF-D lenses, so it's not necessary to use AF-S lenses. I can't believe how quickly my old 50mm f/1.8 AF focuses on this camera.

The viewfinder is big and bright, and provides 100% coverage.

All in all, I think this is still a great film camera, even though it's been over twenty years since its introduction.

I Shoot Film! What's YOUR Super Power?

The Nikon F5 is THE greatest 35mm SLR of all time! Period! I grew up during the 60s and shot 35mm film (both color and B&W) through the 70s, 80s and about half of the 90s. When digital cameras came out, I bought into the technology quickly, but I missed shooting film.

I have a Nikon D1, D1X, D1H, D2Xs, D750, D810, and am seriously considering getting a D5. So, WHY would I purchase a Nikon F5 and get back into 35mm film? BECAUSE I CAN and because it's VERY COOL! I also just bought a t-shirt that says, "I Shoot Film! What's YOUR Super Power?" on it!

They didn't stop making 35mm, 120 or 220 film, and there's still mountains of it available, so why NOT get back into film!? It's cheap, processing is cheap, prints are cheap and the quality is fantastic!

TRY IT AND YOU'LL GET HOOKED!

Used Nikon for over thirty-five years

You are here, looking at a NIKON so you are on the right step. I first started using an old Nikon F Potomic T, made in 1965 and I was using this at my first news paper job in 1974, so Nikon equipment last. In a few short years I was shooting with the Nikon F2 Photomic with a motor drive and that lasted over ten years. The next camera was the Nikon F3 with the MD-4 motor drive. Throughout those years, I used lenses I bought in ’74 and up to ’89 when I retired as a forensic photographer. None of the Nikons ever let me down, the F3-HP with drive was so nice to use, well balanced no matter what lens I was using. Often I would have two, sometimes three cameras in use at one time; one with a wide angle 24mm, another with a 35mm f: 1.4 for low light and the third a short telephoto – 105mm lens. My cameras were my tools and as such, worked, I did not have time to baby them, and they had been banged against walls, against each other, and dropped, as I slipped down a hill. After picking myself up, dusting off my camera, the two I had still worked with a few new scratches. Today, these cameras can still be found and still working; it’s been thirty-five years or more since they came out and Nikon has introduced over a hundred different new or redesigned lenses and I believe everyone will work on the old F3 or F3-HP. There is no doubt that the Nikon “F” soirees is one of the best and oldest made camera and that should mean something. You can use almost all the new lenses, but why, the older lenses are sharp and as well built as the Nikon F body is. I have bought my son an F3 for his first camera and I can’t count how many I have bought off eBay because of the price. It’s time for me to start selling off a few, but I will always have my trusty Nikon F2 and F3-HP for when I want to shoot film. Good luck and buy a camera that your children will use! Brick with a brain

This camera takes exquisite images. People look at my finished product and ask " how do you do that." I reply, "it's the camera." It focuses faster than my F4 and is tack sharp using standard AFD Nikon lenses. The F5 requires time to learn its functions. The thing is so complicated it out thinks me but like with a wife I don't argue. Once I scan the negs and print them I am always impressed. For years I used a Nikon DSLR AND HAVE RETURNED TO FILM and this camera functions in a similar fashion making the transition easy. If you purchase the F5 you won't be disappointed.
