Better than a '57 Hand-Wired Champ

I bought this amp because of the super Looow price and was amazed. Amazed that they could produce a Champ clone at this price. It's a copy of the original Champ circuit with a Tone knob, which makes it a Princeton circuit. With this basic time-proven circuit, there is no way you can go wrong.

At first look, I was impressed with the white tolex, leather handle and chrome face plate. The build quality is solid and tight. So tight it is tough to remove the back panel and chassis, but that's not an issue. I like the white tolex, a different look from all the black amps I own. It's a quality covering, not thin like contact paper. The handle is a thick leather that should last the life of the amp.

As far as the electronics go, it is mostly SMD (Surface Mount). The tubes are made in China and can be upgraded. I left the Chinese tubes in the amp as they are not that bad. When they go, I will upgrade them. The speaker is an 8" Celestion, 8-ohm. I'm not a big fan of Celestion speakers, but like it in this amp. It also has an external jack to plug in a different 8-ohm speaker cabinet. Plugging in the external speaker disconnects the internal speaker.

The 1W-5W switch is a misnomer, it does not change the wattage of the amp, it makes the Jack a Low-High input. Instead of having two jacks on the faceplate, it is one jack with a switch to change it from Low to High. If you have the jack switch on 1W and use a pedal, you can crank the amp to 5-watts.

I wanted to modify the amp, but decided to leave it alone. The main reason is that it is mostly SMD (surface mount devices) and not mod friendly. I also couldn't find any schematics and didn't want to draw one up.

This amp has the sounds they were using back then, when they were creating Classic Rock. It doesn't need a Bass, Mid and Treble knob. It needs to be cranked up and played. It does it all, Rock, Jazz, Country, etc. and is great for using pedals. It has all the Classic Rock sounds and more.

Straight up Simple!

Pros: Great price-point for a simple yet useful little tube amp. Great sounding Celestion Super 8 speaker. Perfect for adding it in your guitar rig setup as a second amp for stereo effects. It appears well made and very attractive in the cream Tolex covering. It's a straight up simple amp with no bells and whistles but should take external pedals well. Light and very portable!

Cons: It does have a chemical odor but I think that will dissipate shortly after airing out. It would be an awesome amp for at home practice if it came with a headphone jack in front.

Best deal on today's market for a small, sweet tube amp.

Sweet sound, definitely gets better with some playing time, certainly benefits from a compressor/sustainer. In keeping with the budget ethos, a Behringer compressor is terrific. Easy speaker swap, but all the videos I've seen haven't convinced me the Celestion is lacking in any way. That's what your guitar's tone control is for.
I've mostly played clean, it's plenty strong at 1 watt, so I can't say much about crunch. I will say a decade ago I owned both the small Vox and Fender 1W/5W amps that were out at the time, and I think this sounds much nicer at a great price.
Tube amps with no effects are a different beast from solid state, and beginning guitarists might be put off by what seems like a boring, plain sound. Check out a few vids on how to wrangle tones from a tube amp, get a couple cheap fun pedals, and I guarantee you'll never look back.

Well worth the money

I bought this little amp for home practice. With such a low price I really wasn't expecting much so when I received it I was quite surprised. The fit and finish far surpassed my expectations and the sound is pretty darn good. It really screams when cranked and has great distortion. It lacks bottom end and that is the biggest disappointment for me but the mids and highs are awesome. I plan on upgrading the tubes and speaker one day but for now it's great for bedroom noodling.Lire l'avis complet...

Best practice amp value out there.

For the price this little amp punches way above its weight class. I’ve had an Epiphone Valve Jr with an 8 inch Celestian speaker. This amp sounds better and it has a tone control and you can select between 1 and 5 watts. In a practice room setting at 1 watt it is very loud. Breaks up nicely without blowing your ear drums. Great bang for buck!

This is a great little amp for the small size genre. Nice looks easy comfortable plush handle. Well built and sturdy. But most of all sounds great. Gets loud for its power rating. Has a jack for an external speaker, little added bonus there. Lire l'avis complet...

Worth more than the price!

This baby weighs in at 13+lbs and has a solid chassis. The 6V6GT & 12AX7 tube set up compares to Fender tube amps of all kinds. Celestion 8" speaker gives true tones and captures subtle nuances. This is a LOUD amp, and also has the Marshall glassy tube amp sound. Once you harness the sheer power, and dial back the tone knob, you will experience a very warm guitar sound. My Fender Squire Deluxe Stratocaster never sounded so good, and this is the perfect portable amp. Whether as a practice amp, or for the full band gig with drums and all, the Monoprice Stage Right 611705 5 watt Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker covers a lot of ground. The cream Tolex and shining chrome face with the red jewel light captures that retro '60's feel.Lire l'avis complet...

Fantastic! Exceeded expectations!

If you're on the fence about this thing, just get it! Got mine today and it's everything I expected and more. Sounds great! I'm a Telecaster person, and this amp really seems well matched to Teles, with great spank and percussiveness. The tone knob is surprisingly useful. Honestly, I'm enjoying this little thing much more than I ever enjoyed my silver face Twin Reverb. A little reverb, some tremolo, and you're in tonesville, man! Couldn't possibly be happier!Lire l'avis complet...

Big amp in a little body

I bought this with a plan to use it for a parts amp. But when it arrived, it looked to good to tear right into. So I plugged it in. Played with it a few minutes checking out the volume response and the 1 watt to 5 watt to see how the tubes would break up. So far so good. Has a good tone right out of the box. Had the volume about 3 and treble about 4. Then I plugged in my Digitech board that also has a 12ax7 hiding inside it. And I was pleasantly surprised. For such a little guy, this boy can scrap.

The appearance is more than fine too. Everything you would expect from an amp at more than a few more dollars. On/Off switch is a metal toggle, not plastic toggle. Nice pilot light, chicken head knobs in White. And the simple push button to cut back watts and push it right into overdrive. Stout little Celestion 8 packed inside. Just generally a nice looking little amp, and not as small as most little practice amps. This gives me plenty of volume for sitting around in the bedroom. And, to be honest, if this holds up, would do fine in front of a mic if I were playing out. Plus there is that Speaker output on the back I will be testing on my 2x12 celestion cabinet later, and my 4x 12... just for grins.

Monoprice/Stageright? 5W 8” Combo

Just played around for a while tonight but at first glance it has flexibility great tone (clean & lowish). I mean it sounds great out of the box. I’m sure there’s a few upgrades maybe? Maybe just leave it alone? I can’t usually! Anyway for 112 bones with express shipping it’s incredible. Keep in mind it is a 5W amp with an 8” speaker which is awesome as long as that’s what you want.

Strat with Lace Golds was in the tone zone though like I said mid vol on 1W tone at 12. Man warm, real responsive and sweet. Like >$100 sweet. 👌🏼

Time will tell but I can’t see how you can go wrong. Tubes and oh and it has an out to push a cab. I mean duh, yea get it.

-c.
