Good value lens, with inevitable tradeoffs

I'm really happy with this for the money, I'm a casual photographer who has some needs above what a smartphone can capture.

Pros - solid build; easy to use; when it focuses, it's sharp, much better than the out-of-box zoom lens from Sony.
Cons - sometimes struggles to find AF, especially when close to minimum focal length; AF changes are clunky

Best investment for your camera, bar none!

The 50 mm prime lens is the absolute best addition you can make to your DSLR camera. They are usually available with the widest aperture being somewhere between 1.8 and 1.4, and are readily available used and new for all popular DSLR brands. The widest opening on this particular lens is 1.7, which will allow you to shoot without flash in much lower light settings than your kit lens will allow. This is also a great lens for taking portraits, as you can get a shallower depth of field with the wider aperture settings. Fixed focal length lenses are lighter and almost always produce better image quality than a zoom lens shooting at similar focal length.
For those who do not already know, the minolta maxxum lenses will fit and work with your Sony alpha mount camera, and the minolta lenses are usually less expensive than the sony equivalent lens.
No matter what brand of DSLR you own, get a 50 mm prime lens with a 1.8 or wider f stop setting. It will be among the most used lenses in your camera case.

great lens and cheap

the image is so sharp and bokeh is amazing. low light works nice. fast auto focus , the only thing that would be perfect if only the manual focus ring was easier to use it's so small and smooth cant even put my fingers and have simple grip on it . will that is just with manual focus and other than that the lens worth more especially if you have full frame camera.

if you have any question, I'm ready to answer

Great into to macro lens!

I picked this up after being dissatisfied with "macro" lenses that weren't "true macro" lenses. 1:1 magnification is super cool. To get to 1:1 and be in focus you've got to be CRAZY close to your subject. So much that sometimes a ring light won't actually be able to shine on anything because it's in the shadow of the ring.

Do yourself a favor and also pick up a cheap AF teleconverter for not only more magnification, but the ability to back up and still achieve greater than 1:1. The distance from the subject helps a little bit for lighting.

Great built and photo quality for its price, get it before prices go higher

Have taken several photos since I get this lens, from beautiful portraits to nice landscapes. I can't believe the quality I am getting with such an economic lens.

Good build quality, sharp, easy to handle because of its low weight and small size. The only issue you will have is only if it is your first time with a fixed lens you'll need to get used to it and learn more how to compose and frame, but that has nothing to do with this review, you will love the results anyway.

I highly recommend it!

great lens

I'm just a beginning photographer, who has had very poor results using digital cameras. I got an old maxxuum earlier this year. this lens is a great addition to the zoom lenses I got with he camera. even though it is old, it tKes great pictures. the focus is pretty quick, but the low f stop is the best part in that I can use it in low light or to grab a good action shot. definitely would recommend this lens for Minolta users or even some Sony digital (it is supposed to work with them as well)Lire l'avis complet...

sharper than standard lens in low light

The 1.7 aperture gives you twice the speed of the standard 3.5, in low light. If I had hundreds of dollars, I'd get a better lens, but for the price, this prime lens gives very slightly better results in daylight, and significantly better in low light, compared with the standard zoom.Lire l'avis complet...

Great but difficult to manually focus. Great lens though!

This is a great fast lens for the money. I have no problems using it on the Sony a-33 and A-500. Two very different camera systems. Sony SLT's are notoriously bad at accepting aftermarket lenses, but this one being a Minolta has no problems at all. It's 1.7 F range is fantastic and gives some of the clearest photos I've ever taken. The only thing i dont like is that the focus ring is almost unuseablely thin, and makes for very difficult manual focusing when you want to ditch the AF. but this is rare and not that much to deal with. A great buy for anyone using Sony/Minolta cameras. In fact I might say a "MUST" have to be honest.Lire l'avis complet...

Great 50mm

Product is sharp, clean. Just a great 50mm F 1.7 with Auto Focus. Plus I waited a 50 mm for my Sony Alpha that will also fit nicely on my Minolta.

Great value and quality night landscape astrophotography lens.

I bought this normal fast lens to take low light photos of the Milky Way galaxy with my Sony full frame camera and could not be happier. Outstanding sharp image and color quality that can only be taken with a large max aperature lens like this all for about $30 has me smiling with every shutter click.Lire l'avis complet...
