A Marvelous Read!
I am retired from the Air Force. A throughout my career, I hardly ever read any unassigned reading about air power in WWII. I figured, "Why bother? I already know the ending...the good guys win!" I happened upon this book at my local library because it briefly mentioned my late father-in-law's B-17, the Red Gremlin. I read the small excerpt and then I started to read the book itself. All I can say is WOW! I haven't been excited about a good book like this in years. Donald Miller puts flesh and blood on what could have been another dry, by-the-numbers history of the Eighth Air Force in England. In describing this book to others, I told them that if Ken Burns (of "The Civil War" PBS documentary fame)would become a book author, this would be the book he would have written. Miller adds touches of genuine humanity (and humor) to the broad canvas of the American Air Force Forces in Europe during WWII. The facts and figures are there, the same as thousands of other books about "The Mighty Eighth", but there are also written snapshots of what life was really like for our fathers' and grandfathers' generation at war. I was genuinely surprised at some revelations (i.e., I did not know that the supposed neutral Swiss did not like the American flyboys landing in their country and had a number of POW camps to imprison them staffed with sadistic guards)and awed at other facts (the chapter on what other factors the aviators faced that could kill them other than enemy artillery is worth the price of the book itself). This book is crammed with stories of the courage, humanity, humor, terror, shame and triumph that was the everyday world of our fathers and grandfathers. I was so impressed with this book that I bought four more copies to give away as Christmas gifts this year to my other relations. They have agreed with me that it has been the finest book they have read in years about this subject. This book is a living testament to that cause of over sixty years ago; I cannot recommend this book highly enough. (PS- I had to return this book to the library and I was only done with half of it- I bought the book to finish my reading. For me to buy this book when I could get it for free says volumes about this book from cheapskate me!)Lire l'avis complet...
Very detailed account of ww2 Bomber Group. I cant wait for the Mini-Series on Apple TV
Perfect Condition. I read this book just before bed, and completed in a couple of weeks. The book gave a great background and description of the people in the 8th Airforce and the people around them, including the Germans point of view...being on the receiving end of all these bombing attacks. War is terrible for all involved.....Lire l'avis complet...

Definitely One of the Best Books on World War II
Have been studying history and World War II since I was a kid, but never had an understanding of the sheer horror these crews faced every day. Also made me re-think my heroes who led them, who now seem petty and callous. This is an amazing book and will give you PTSD as it is so vivid and detailed.Lire l'avis complet...

They were ALL Masters of the Air
My father flew in one of those B17 and was shot down over Berlin-so this series had significant impact on me! He was also on Luft Stalag 1 in Germany!

Good value for people that are interested in world war 2 history
Comprehensive description of the 8th air force history in world war 2. It would be nice if the book had more details about the airplanes that the 8th and the Germans used.

Well worth reading!
This military history is well written and interesting. It is so much more than dry statistics of unit identification and their movements. Personal interviews and antidotes bring to life what these guys experienced. Lire l'avis complet...
Hard to put this book down.
A great read for facts and stories about the war, its people, aircraft and related creation of the greatest war operation of its time.

Best book I've ever read on the bombing raids in WWII. A must for all history buffs, or you had a family member of the war.
