Julie Andrews & Dick Van Dyke Musical Classic (1964)

Mary Poppins is perhaps one of the greatest children's films I've ever seen. Mary Poppins (soprano Julie Andrews) is a perfect nanny with special powers. The show includes a near flawless mix of live action & animation. The film's musical score is superb, as well. The script, based on P.L. Travers book, is meticulous.

Beginning with a British mother & father (Johns & Tomlinson), who decide to palace an ad for another nanny for their 2 precocious children, Jane and Michael Banks (Dotrice and Garber, the children write their own ad, which their father tears up & burns in their fireplace. The pieces mysteriously go up the flue and into the hands of Mary Poppins. The next day, she glides down from the sky by way of her magic umbrella and answers the children's ad.

Poppins (Andrews) is not a typical nanny. The children can't outdo her as they have every other nanny, for one thing. To captivate their wild imaginations, Poppins takes them on magical adventures even as she teaches the Banks children British etiquette. Bert (Van Dyke) the chimney sweep accompanies Poppins and the children on a holiday to a an animated world with penguins, who serve tea on a carousel, with live horses. They meet Uncle Albert (Wynn), whose laughter causes everyone to levitate. Jane Darwell plays her final role as the Bird Lady.

The 1964 film won Academy Awards for Best Actress, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Song, and Best Special Visual Effects. Producer Walt Disney considered Mary Poppins his highest achievement throughout a career that earned him more Oscars than anyone else. The musical score by Disney's composers Richard & Robert Sherman include:
"A Spoonful of Sugar," "Chim Chim Cheree," "Feed the Birds,"
"Let's Go Fly a Kite," & "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."

A wonderful movie and musical

This musical is fantastic from beginning to end. The acting is off the chart, scenery heavenly, and songs very memorable. Apparently, it took twenty years to obtain the rights and the effort is really worth it. Dick Van Dyke is exceedingly great and what more can you say about Julie Andrews. The plot is engaging and I consider this one of the top ten movies of all time. The cartooning is superb along with the dancing and plot. All ages will thoroughly enjoy. Sip a glass of wine, lay back, and thank your lucky stars. Lire l'avis complet...

Don't you want her as your Nanny, even if you're all grown up???

I saw it first run in theaters and have loved it ever since. I haven't watched the extras included on this 40th anniversary edition, but they really are just extra. I'll love them and watch them all, but the important thing is the original film. I also love Mary Poppins Returns.Lire l'avis complet...

Mary Poppins - Still Magical and Memorable! :-)

MARY POPPINS -- I can remember this movie as one of the first I fell in love with... and had the VINYL album playing the music over and over and over as a child in my room. I knew the words to every song, and surprisingly I still do!! lol--- But what kid back in the mid-late 60s didn't say, SUPERCALIFRAGILICIOUSEPEALADOCIOUS... or however you spell it!! Such a made up word of independence and confidence!! :-) And what kid didn't wish they could snap their fingers and clean up their room. SURE special effects has come a few decades since this early/mid 60s flick. But few have more charm and are more memorable than this movie. I loved it as a child, and just learned I love it FONDLY as an adult too! -- The messages are warm and timeless in this movie really, family priorities and a lil magic needed to see the contrast of what is impt and what is not in our daily lives -- Honestly, I think we could all use a little of Poppins magic these days! Ms Andrews beautiful singing and Dick Van Dyke's physical humor, simply and honestly, a classic!! ~~ Anyway, I saw Julie Andrews recently on some other show and was telling my daughter what a BEAUTIFUL voice she had... and how sad it is that she no longer sings, and a alto if she does. Most recall her in the SOUND OF MUSIC classic, but Julie Andrews appears in this movie she says as HER FIRST MOVIE ROLE!! ~~ I wanted a DVD of this movie as rememberence of a fond childhood memory, but of a classic academy award winning musical/movie and of a record of a very classy lady w one of the most beautiful voices of all time. It was and still is a lil gem -- combining DISNEY, Walt's vision...Julie Andrews and her lovely voice w/ Dick Van Dyke... I'd forgotten what a pleasure this movie was and as I watched it, see that it is still a GEM. ~~ THe 40th anniversary RELEASE - EXTRAS DVD - has some fun info about the making of this movie, re WALT and his vision for the partial animation w live actor interaction, and of the overall inspiration and visions behind the movie = Nice insights. ~~ ALSO, one the composers chats in a 2004 interview/singing/conversation w Ms Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Discussing how songs came about, how written, and their memories of the movie/ and making of.. I enjoyed it very much. I smiled throughout the movie and throughout the extras DVD. ~~ I'm happy to finally have this in my DVD collection! Glad it was still available, SMILES : Lire l'avis complet...

Delightful musical with Julie Andrews at a time before she had lost her voice to surgery. Dick Van Dyke always entertaining.

Life can be learned from a game as a Child

A fantasy movie of a nanny teaching children response ability and their fathers love. Just being a child and learning.
