Blaming the victim?
The true stories of grizzly bear attacks are vivid, chilling, and will convince you never to set foot in a National park where grizzlies live ---- which seems to be the point. After each incident, the author draws a conclusion as to why the bear attacked. The conclusion is always the same: the victim was at fault. The victim was mauled because he snuck up on the bear quietly. Or made noise that attracted the bear's attention. Or angered the bear by fighting back. Or didn't fight back aggressively enough. Or triggered the bear's chase instinct by running away. Or didn't get away from the bear's territory quickly enough. Or failed to use bear repellent, even though in many cases the hiker used the pepper spray but it had no effect on the bear. If you wholeheartedly believe that grizzlies have more rights than people, this book is very satisfying. Otherwise, it's a bit like saying if you get raped, it's your own fault because you shouldn't be walking alone after dark. If it is fundamentally wrong to trespass in a grizzly bear's territory, then it should be illegal to camp or hike in a bear's habitat. Period. If, as this book posits, there is no foolproof way to stay safe in bear country, then there is no sense risking human lives and antagonizing bears. Lire l'avis complet...

Great book for Backpackers and hikers
Great book for back backers and hikers in bear country. I didn't really take bear safety seriously before reading this book, but now i sure do! Not for the light hearted though, very gruesome. I got hooked and read through it quite quickly while in Glacier National Park Backpacking.Lire l'avis complet...
