pretty good. Compact.

This GPS seems to work fairly well. After it has aquired position the first time it's startup is pretty quick. The joystick in the middle is not great at all. It does not nicely click up/down/side and would rather click straight down. This makes it harder to enter text labels etc. I like that I can label points instead of just have numbered points. We'll see how close it navigates me back to points.Lire l'avis complet...

Explorist 100 works great.

This handheld GPS is great for someone who just needs the basics. This unit doesn't have any maps or extra features. If you just need something to give your location, speed, compass, or point you in the direction of a saved waypoint, this unit will work great. I wasn't worried about extra features because all I use it for is a speedometer in a car. The reception is great and I never have a problem using it in a car. The unit is also WAAS enabled which gives it good accuracy. So, if you just need a basic, no frills GPS this unit will do great! At under $100 new, it's a great value.Lire l'avis complet...

More For Outback, Not Highways

Please correct me if wrong, but I believe this unit is primarily intended for use in the outdoors (woods, deserts, lakes, the outback). It appears to be similar to the Garmin eTrex which I am familiar with and have used for 3 or 4 years. They are great for marking your path in the outback, keeping track of where you change directions, go around a ravine, etc. What you do is mark your points where the path changes, and then when you want to return to your starting point you tell it to "go home" (if "home" is your starting point). But other than that, if you don't mark your waypoints, it will just point to where "home" is, and that might be straight across the ravine, lake, etc. So you have to mark your direction/path/trail changes as you go out, in order to retrace your outbound steps and get back to camp.
They work just fine for the purpose they were intended for. But you don't see any maps, trails, or display such as you would on a map, nor on a vehicle GPS. You see an arrow pointing to where your next "mark" is, a wiggly line that indicates the path you will take, and the readout of how far you have to go to get back to camp. Also it will show you the elevation above sea level, actual GPS Coordinates, time, date,...
A good unit for what it was designed to do. But I probably would not try to use it navigating a vehicle on public roads. A boat on a lake, to get to you favorite fishing spot, yes. But not really practical in a car. At least, "IMHO". ;-)

Simple, very useful, easy to use, accurate

The eXplorist 100 is very easy to use and cost-benefit ratio is excellent. I think that has better reception than the Garmin etrex. The only disadvantage of this equipment is the lack of connection to the computer. But I do not mind writing the coordinates by hand. I highly recommend to start with GPS devices. Thanks

Merci

A very nice GPS for the price.

The main reason of why I bought this GPS is because I needed a newer unit for navigation, geocaching and trekking.

I like alot the GPS, starting by the color which has a main advantage which is very easy to find on a backpack in the night, the plotter it's a great feature, also having two levels of brightness it's helpful depending on the light conditions, customise the screen it's neat feature because you can chose different types of "applications" depending on what are you doing, and this can be changed only in the plotter screen and compass screen.

What I don't like alot it's the battery life, compared to my older unit (Magellan GPS Pioneer/ GPS 300) which has a battery life up to 24 hours, but this is compensated with the great accuracy of the GPS.

The unit only saves three tracks (which are different than routs, routs are a "tracks" which are traced by two or more waypoints)

I don't have any other units simillar to this one, but I thing it's simillar to the Garmin eTrex H.

And some people is asking if this unit has USB serial port, and the answer is; yes, it has one it's located behind the batteries and has a small rubber square to cover it.

product as advertised

purchasedmagellan explorist several weeks ago and use it on out atvs. We do most of our riding in the desert country of the owyhees and the mountains north of boise. Primarily i use it to mark locations i want to return to and it performs excellently. I do some rock hunting and gold prospecting, i can pick up samples and record the location then later if i want i can return to exactly the same area, The unit will take me back within 5 ft consistantly and have found a couple of geocatches with it. I wanted a portable, lightweight unit and this fits comfortably in a shirt pocket.Lire l'avis complet...

Simply an Excellent Geocaching GPS

Looking for a simple GPS to use geocaching? This is it. Easy to read, simple function screens. No map overlay capabilities to confuse the user and create additional menus and pages to step through. Front panel controls, easy to use. Rugged, too; I have dropped mine several times in the wild, and used it in the rain, and it still clocks on. A nicely simple, utilitarian, and inexpensive device for those who do not need bells and whistles.Lire l'avis complet...

Magellan Xplorist good for first timers, casual users

I bought this as a starter model for geocaching. Positives are that it acquires signals and a fix relatively quickly (a minute or two in open terrain), is easy to use, has a good backlight and a clear display. Negatives are that you have to enter coordinates in manually, there is no topo map and its accuracy isn't phenomenal, but acceptable. Overall I'm happy with it.Lire l'avis complet...
