Lost Odyssey

It is truely amazing that this game comes from the same developer that made Blue Dragon. I'm not saying Blue Dragon was a bad game or anything, it's just if you look at the games, they look so different. Blue Dragon has more anime-like graphics while Lost Odyssey is much more realistic.

In fact, that's the first thing you see in this game. It starts with a cutscene on a battlefield where we see our hero dominating the other army. This is where you truely get to see just how great the graphics are. Obviously, we also get introduced to the story, which is original, highly detailed and quite epic.

A neat addition is the "Thousand Year Dreams" which gives more background to some of the characters. It allows you to get to know your characters from before this story begins. You can choose to skip them, but I find them quite interesting to read. The one thing is that there are a few typos in them, but not many. Just things like "You can hear people getting dying," instead of "people getting killed" or "people dying."

My only complaint is that on the first disc, there are a two EXTREMELY difficult boss battles. It really is not balanced with the rest of the game. I'm only on the third disc, but have not come across another boss as difficult as the ones on the first disc. It was very frustrating and made me almost put the game away. Once you get past them, though, the game is tons of fun.

It took me 25 hours to do the first two disc and I'm up to 30 hours, so expect a long and epic single player adventure that will consume your life for about a week. This is an amazing RPG that all fans of RPGs should check out.

If you're here for Blue Dragon-esqe, be wary

Definitely was coming in with different expectations due to this being made by the same team behind Blue Dragon. I listened to the soundtrack before and really enjoyed so figured it would transfer through gameplay. I was thrown off at first, but I've recognized it as its own experience. Great music ofc but also engaging story. If anything, I'm continuing to play out of curiosity which I find to be quite a good draw to any game.Lire l'avis complet...

Awesome fun game with equally awesome music and exploration. Best since FFX

I am currently on the second disk so that is how deep my review will be.

So far it has been an amazing ride. It feels more like Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy XIII in some ways. Not surprising since it was created by the genius behind Squaresoft and Final Fantasy 1-10.

The story has many of sad moments, it's well paced and a joy to explore the awesome and sometimes dark/sad environments.

The characters are all likable. Kaim reminds me of Squall he is very serious and tough yet you come to learn why later on.

The music is awesome, created by the same man behind most if not all the music heard in games before Hironobu was fired. Less synthesized than usual, more orchestral, but still fun to listen to.

The graphics are awesome even though the game came out about 3 years ago. Many cool looking places.

Gameplay is good, there are many things to do, there is actually a world map for example. Awesome for those who love the old FF games before 10. Other features include creating rings, finding hidden treasures, and remembering dreams.

Dreams are past memories that Kaim gets in different parts of the story. They are very fun to read. Most of them are sad. Since he has lived for 1000s of years as an immortal one can only imagine that he has met many people and seen those same people die.

Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

Gameplay: 8.0
The game is extremely old-school, from the challenge level to the combat system, meaning that it’s not for everyone. Also, the game has some pacing issues, with substantial load times breaking up the game. However, the ring system is well done, and the story elements will keep your interest.

Graphics: 8.5
The Unreal Engine 3 is used quite nicely here, letting the world be fully realized in tremendous detail. The only downfall is the spotty framerate.

Sound: 9.0
Although there are a couple hammy voice actors in the bunch, most of them sound great and the score is excellent.

Difficulty: Hard

Concept: 8.5
While the gameplay is perhaps a little too traditional and old-school for most mainstream gamers, the story and art design are tops.

Overall: 8.5
Lost Odyssey is as old-school as Mistwalker’s previous Xbox 360 effort, albeit a lot more difficult and requires a lot more level grinding. Plus, the pacing issues will undoubtedly frustrate gamers wanting to keep the game moving. Still, there is a lot to love in Lost Odyssey, thanks to the top-rate production values and story.

A fantastical game for classic JRPG fans

Short review: Wonderful game.

A little more: it's like many of the great JRPG's of yore, but with a little breath of fresh air. The hero isn't the stereotypical prettyboy spiky-haired kid we're so used to. Kaim is as moody as they come, but this time for a very good reason. When you're a millennia-old mercenary, you have every right to be cranky.

Story: Halfway through, and so far it's pretty good. The main story is told through a mix of gameplay and animated sequences (both pre-rendered shorts, and the majority remainder real-time graphics). The "dreams" you uncover throughout the game are each literary masterpieces within themselves, 10-page miniature novels penned by a famous Japanese writer Kiyoshi Shigematsu. Also, the story overall can be very emotional and touching - I shed tears during many parts along the way.

Gameplay: A bit run-of-the-mill JRPG, which isn't bad. If you want a tied-and-true JRPG with random battles, HP and MP meters, turn-based menu-driven battles, and talking to lots of townsfolk and hunting dungeons for treasure chests, this is your bag. I love it, but if you wanted something more 21st century, you may be disappointed.

Music: Wonderful. By legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy fame, he does not disappoint. It's not quite as memorable as FF7 so far, but everything is appropriate. Battle theme doesn't become monotonous after your 200th battle, or your 1000th one. Strings, percussion, and brass all mix well.

Characters: Here's where I'm really liking it. The characters so far are lovely. They seem very human and well thought out. While Kaim may be a humbug at the start, he mellows out. The surrounding characters that join your party definitely help fill the void, especially Jansen.

Art/graphics: The art department really went overboard in this game. Graphics are pretty and all, but I'll focus on the art side. Architecture is amazing, and there's great attention to detail. The worlds and interior rooms feel very lush and lively. Not everything is perfect - water fountains seem fake with poor water flow effects, and some textures are jaggy. But overall, it's well-designed.

Voice: Some of you are picky on voice actors. Well, good news, you can switch to other voices, and not just original Japanese. German, French and Italian are also available. Why not Spanish? I don't know... And in my opinion, the English voice actors are pretty damn good, so I felt no need to switch. But someday I'll replay with original Japanese voices.

Overall, I love this game. BUT that's because I love classic JRPG's. If you want something new, try something like Mass Effect or perhaps Fallout 3. But for the Final Fantasy goons out there, try this and see why I'm quickly considering this the "real" FFXII. Or at least my FFXI replacement.

Fantastic JRPG for the XBOX 360!

Nothing new to see here; just good old-fashioned turn-based combat.

Story is the typical beat the bad guy.

Voice acting is cringe worthy at times, but it grew on me.

Dream sequences are the highlight of this game. Truly fantastic story-telling.Lire l'avis complet...

Lost Odyssey - A Rare RPG Gem on Xbox 360

Ill be brief because its been a long time since ive played this. I picked it up as a replacement for my copy I 'lost' to an ex, lol.

Anyways the story and gameplay is great, visuals are superb quality for its time. Story wise, it starts off a bit weird but it picks up and gives details as you go along pretty quick to give you an understanding of why it started off weird. Gameplay wise, if you are a fan of the more classic turn based combat like older Final Fantasy titles (FF1-FFX) then this would be right up your alley.

Sadly its the only game in its own (currently), doesnt have any sequels or prequels in the NA/EU regions.

The first real rpg for the XBOX 360

This game is so immersive. If you love the FF games Then Lost Odyssey is for you. It flows so naturally from beginnning to end. The game delivers in areas that previous RPG titles have lacked. The story sets you in the character of Kiam a 1000 year old immortal who has lost his memories. As you play the game you uncover dreams that restore your past. In my opinion this is very original. I find myself reading each new dream with anticipation. Game play (battles) is fairly straight forward turn based tactics. Music is good, Graphics are phenominal. The story is the best I've seen this year by far of any game. I see a future for this game in the secondary market. I bought it the day it game out and haven't put it down yet. Get it you won't regret it.Lire l'avis complet...

Fantastic gem.

I’ve heard about the game but never got a chance to play it. I’m pleased that I did. It was just what I was looking for in an RPG. Well worth the purchase.
