“Good evenin’, people of Los Angeles. We’re Flogging Molly, and this is what we do.”

Lead vocalist Dave King couldn’t have provided a better introduction to this two-disc live recording. This is a full-on concert experience from beginning to end. Live At The Greek Theatre doesn’t cut a single thing short as one song blends seamlessly into the next, all cheers and onstage banter included.

Flogging Molly kicks it off strong with the fast-paced “The Likes Of You Again”, before launching straight into 2000’s “Swagger”. Their set is interspersed with additional crowd favorites such as “Devil’s Dance Floor”, “What’s Left Of The Flag”, and the aptly chosen closer “Seven Deadly Sins”. As King informs the audience, “We’re gonna be doin’ lots o’ old songs, lots o’ new songs, and havin’ a bit of fun in between.”

The band’s energy runs strong through the entirety of the twenty-two song set. They never fail to keep the audience’s attention, including a run of three acoustic songs mid-show (“Us Of Lesser Gods”, “The Son Never Shines (On Closed Doors)”, “Float”).

King never forgets his Irish heritage, referencing the brutal history of his ancestors at the hands of Oliver Cromwell in a preface to “Tobacco Island”. There is an aspect of storytelling in which he approaches not only the lyrical content of the songs, but the introduction and presentation of them to the audience at large. "Tobacco Island" opens with the heavy accompaniment of the audience’s handclaps, enticing the listener to clap along as well.

As this is a concert recording, you can expect many of the songs to run far past their usual length as Flogging Molly opens up the songs to extended instrumentals, audience participation, King’s heavily-accented asides, or even just a pause as the band stops to refresh themselves with some beer between songs. While Live At The Greek Theatre provides a wonderful showcase to the band in their live element, you may prefer to listen to the album versions from Flogging Molly’s full-length CDs if you’re looking for shorter tracks and you’d like to skip past the drawn-out introductions to each member of the band towards the end of their set.

If you have never seen Flogging Molly live, then you definitely need to pick up Live At The Greek Theatre. It’s an all-inclusive experience from beginning to end, all the while sparing you from the usual flying beer cups of a Flogging Molly crowd.

Great concert-would like to see this group in person. But since I live so far away I will have to settle for CDs and DVDs of them in concert.
