Lost Somewhere between Mahavishnu and Shakti

These Eagle Vision Folks (the Producers) have a great product in releasing Monteux Jazz Festival Concerts on DVD. I have 'Yes', 'Weather Report' and now Mahavishnu Orchestra Concerts on my shelf.
<br>The Mahavishnu Orchestra DVD is a Two DVD Set, the first one from 1974 and the second one from 1984. On the the first (1974) only two songs have video, the seven or so others are audio only with some silly "Eclipse" video looping over and over. The two video/audio songs are good, but not great. Jean Luc Ponty and JM riffing on a a Mode. My kingdom for a melody. . .

The Second DVD (1984) has JM riffing with Reedman Bill Evans and a kick ass back up band of Jazz notables. It is sheer shredding a la Ritchie Cole. If you need to learn how to play really fast, this is the stuff to watch.

If you need to learn how to improvise on a melody, this ain't the stuff either.

I wish I had bought it earlier.

THis concert film has been around a while. For many years I placed too much faith the negative reviews and complaints about it, so that I didn't break down and buy it until only recently. Boy was I wrong. While, yes, it is older footage and tech, and a sort of short-ish combination of 2 concerts a decade apart(and also there is not video to accompany all of the 1974 portion), it it nonetheless excellent. Great music, and a long gone historic moment in Jazz captured forever. I wish I had bought it way earlier. If you are a McLaughlin/Mahavishnu fan and see one of these for cheap, snap it up by all means.Lire l'avis complet...

Frantic but Formidible Guitar work

I actually was not familiar with this group, only John McLaughlin. I thought
because of the name, that it might be light Indian Meditation themed music. Boy
was I ever wrong. This group was formed when McLaughlin was into way out electric guitar. I definately don't care for this stage of his career. If you love wildly frantic guitar music, you will love this. If on the other hand you want something very soothing, this is not what you want.Lire l'avis complet...

Mahavishnu Then ....and Then

This is nice considering that all the copies that have been "circulating" for all these years have not had the quality that is on this DVD. HOWEVER.....that's thr good news. The bad news is that you only get a couple of songs from the 74 concert and there is so much more of that performance than that! I hope they will put out more of this and more like this. Maybe someday they will put out the footage from the super mega-star big band that performed on the Montreux Summit recordings!Lire l'avis complet...

mahavishnu live at montreuax

this is a rare dvd performance of John mclaughlin and 2 of his bands. I saw both of these tours in the us years agao and it brings back memories for sure. They aren't the best shot shows I have seen but it is better to see them than not see them. A must for any true fan of one of the greatest guitarist of our ageLire l'avis complet...
