Beware of SPA2102 sold on eBay. It's probably locked to a provider.

The SPA2102 is a full featured voice over internet protocol (VoIP) analog terminal adapter (ATA). The SPA2102 has two FXS ports for connection of analog telephone devices. Each of the two FXS ports can be independently programmed allowing the user to have either two lines with different numbers or two lines that are cloned. In some cases, it will be possible to program each line to different providers if desired. The SPA2102 also features a built in router with a firewall and NAT. There are two RJ45 ethernet ports - one for LAN and one for WAN. With the exception of the added features of the firewall and NAT, the SPA2102 has the same functionality as the Linksys PAP2T. This device can be used by home users to connect to a VoIP provider using their existing broadband connection. The SPA2102 converts the analog voice generated by a normal telephone to a digital signal that can be transmitted over the internet for very inexpensive telephone calls. The SPA2102 can also be used by small businesses with their own VoIP PBX to connect an analog device (fax machine) to their otherwise all digital network.

The SPA2102 has a lot of functionality but I would recommend not purchasing these devices on eBay. Many of these devices come preconfigured to work only with a specific provider. Providers like Vonage give these devices to users in order to attract subscribers. The SPA2102 that you receive from a provider will most likely be locked for use only through that provider. Unfortunately, this is the case for the vast majority of these devices sold through eBay. I have purchased three of these devices through eBay and all three were locked to specific providers. Many of the devices will indicate that they are unlocked. In most cases, they are unlocked until the first time that you do a factory reset. This may be necessary because your device has gone out of sync with your VoIP provider. When the factory reset is performed, the device is once again locked to its former provider.

Only the SPA2102-NA is truly unlocked. If the unit that you get has any other suffix other than NA after the SPA2102, then it is locked to a specific provider. For example, an SPA2102-VN can only be used with VoiceWing service. An Spa2102-PU is locked to Lingo service. An SPA2102-R is locked to Sunrocket service. Note that some sellers indicate that their device is an SPA2102-NA but when it arrives, it will have a different suffix. One of the three SPA2102s that I purchased was listed as an SPA2102-NA but when it arrived, it was an SPA2102-PU. The other two were listed as just SPA2102 with no suffix but both were locked to specific providers. Accordingly, I paid roughly $90 for three SPA2102s that I could not use because they were all locked. I could have bought a brand new one from a local seller for $79. Save yourself a headache and purchase it somewhere that you can verify that it is not locked before paying for it.

SPA2102-NA VoIP to POTS [analog telephone] Gateway

This Cisco/Linksys unit can handle up to two analog phone line connections. It connects (via 10/100 Ethernet) to your broadband internet connection. It has a second Ethernet port that can either act as a switched port (transparently replaces the port that you plugged the SPA2102-NA into) or as a Routed port complete with optional DHCP. Be careful when buying one to make certain it is unlocked (e.g. the -NA version, which stands for non associated). Most of these non '-NA' units are tied to a specific VoIP provider who usually locks out specific features and settings from end users, forcing them to use only their services. Certain locked versions of SPA2102s may be unlocked (i.e. turned into a -NA version), it is true, but that is not always guaranteed.
The device features a web portal that can be accessed from the LAN side or the WAN side (if that feature is enabled in the preferences) that can be used to set the VoIP settings you may need. You can also find the numbers you need to get connected to a VoIP carrier as well. Note that use of many if not all of these features usually requires an unlocked version. Another way to configure some settings (like IP addresses) is through a voice prompt menu available through the analog phone port when using a touch-tone telephone handset.
There are a variety of voice codecs available for use in the device, including some that are FAX compatible (those codecs may require higher bandwidth on your internet connection however). Many calling features can be used depending on your VoiP provider. These include caller-ID, call waiting, hold, message waiting indication, etc. The firmware can be updated on these as well. If you think that updating the firmware on a locked unit might unlock it, that is not always the case.
We have been using a couple of these for more than a year at our house. One of our SPA2102's is used with a FAX machine. They are small, dependable, have good sound quality (depending on codec used), and generally fit the bill for home or home office use. Cons may be that the unit does not have a battery backup (i.e. the unit will not work if the power goes out), in our case, our internet connection would also be disabled if the power goes out so that is not a deal breaker for our purpose. The fact that many VoIP service providers use these is a testament to its reliability.

SPA 2102 in the place of PAP2T

Buying SPA2102 in the place PAP2T with little more bucks makes the device more versatile should you check into a hotel that has (wired) internet access in your room, say. Not only can you get your phone service up and running, you still have the extra LAN port to connect up your PC. Otherwise, it would be one or the other.

Second, the default web access is via the LAN (Ethernet) port. This makes the Internet (WAN) side more stealthy, and "anyone" connected on this side could not get into your SPA device and play with it. You CAN open the WAN side for remote admin if you want, but by default access is unavailable.

Devices without the built-in router have no other way to configure their device EXCEPT via the single exposed port, making it somewhat more vulnerable.
