Life Is Beautiful

Conjuring keys and hats out of thin air, Guido (Roberto Benigni), a clever Jewish-Italian waiter, successfully courts Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), a beautiful local woman, in Fascist pre-WWII Italy. His life, however, is turned upside down a few years later when he, Dora, and their young son, Giosué (Giorgio Cantarini), are sent to a Nazi concentration camp. Refusing to give up hope, Guido tries to protect his son's innocence by pretending that their imprisonment is just an elaborate game, with the grand prize being a tank. Many people worried that the film would be as offensive as plopping a cartoon character in Auschwitz. La vita e bella is beautiful!

I never watch a dubbed version of a movie when the original version is available with English subtitles. You miss out on a great deal of the flavour and affect and in this respect you lose a lot in the translation with a dubbed approach. This movie is called "La Vita e bella/Life is beautiful" in the combined Italian/English version and that is how I recommend you purchase it.

This is a movie with a lot of potential to teach. It teaches the value of honesty as a way of life in that this can be fully retained when a man is simply acting in a humorous spirit to make life seem more bearable and to spare children an ugly reality that surrounds them. Yet there is a spirit that continues in Benigni's character as a man who'd like to stay sane honestly enough that he will conjure up a version of events to keep his audience with him and in good humour. Such characters are always trying for as much real honesty as the situation will allow however they have learned a defensive coping mechanism to telling it like it is. And in this respect perhaps his son at the end has a better view of the world than is justified however fact is that he is being lied to by a man who thinks he is being a better father this way. Its a great story that touches on the travesty and the tragedy of the holocaust, as Italian jews were not spared this fate although many were harbored by good Italians who could not go along with Hitler's madness in this respect.Lire l'avis complet...

A reminder of Love, Sacrifice an Innocence

This movie is a must see. Not only did I enjoy it because I am Italian but moreso because it revealed the love that a wife has for her husband; the love a father has for his son and the perservering love that the husband had for the wife. It was a reminder of how sometimes in life we tend to put the stresses of life on our children when that is so unnecessary. Amazingly, this father protects his son's innocence with the game of hide and seek and shelters him from the excruitating circumstances he, his wife and the others were enduring. In this movie the wife gave up her freedom to be with her husband and son; the father hides his pain and suffering so that his son will not suffer. This was a wonderful reminder of how children should be allowed to be children and enjoy the innocence of childhood without the stresses of life that adults endure. Whether you are Italian, Jewish or not; this movie will touch your life, remind you of love, sacrifice and the innocence of childhood. One of the Finest Movies I Have Ever Seen - Heartwarming & Exceptional 3

Beautiful movie - one of the finest I have ever seen. It has so much heart & leaves you feeling uplifted in the end. If every person revered & loved life like Roberto Benigni, the world would indeed be a most wondrous & beautiful place. This will always be in my top 5 movie list! :) I feel like the subtitles & listening to the original language just adds to the feel of the movie, and you don't realize you are reading subtitles after the first 5 - 10 minutes. Life is Beautiful

This is a very beautiful movie the fort time I saw it was at the Colege of The Sequoias in where we had to make comments about the movie. It takes place in Germany during the war. They were jews and got married then the Germans come and the get arrested. The husband went one way with his little son and his wife a different way with all women. I’m the meantime the father tells his son they are in a competition but at the end the Germans kill the dad and the Americans won the war he get pick up by an American and he climbs the tank and sees his mother.
The movie has funny moments and sad moments it is worth a while to watch the movie. That is why is called Life is BeautifulLire l'avis complet...

Definitely a "keeper"

We have seen this movie several times. It is delightful and yet poignant story of romance and sacrifice. We are trying to collect a few of the movies that we believe to be real "keepers" that we can pass on to our children, movies that tell wonderful timeless tales that reflect values that make life, with all of its struggles, worth living. This is such a movie. We have a few others like "It's a Wonderful Life", "Hoosiers", "Brave Heart" that speak to us of nobility in the face of great challenges, and of sacrificial love. "Life is Beautiful" does this and even adds some remarkable humor in the midst of the turmoil and hate of WW2. It runs the gamut of delight to tragic sorrow. Hits hard in the feelz

A trifle silly at first. Wasn't real sure about it. However, we watched and were impressed with the lengths this man went thru to save his son. Being silly to keep a small childs attention while hiding him from the SS guards was an amazing feat of Fatherly love and devotion.
The love shown by the Mother in giving herself up to be sent to a camp was amazing considering she wasn't required to go. Love is a modifier on things beyond human comprehension.Lire l'avis complet...

Amazing Movie

Life is Beautiful is one of my favorite movie titles. The setting takes place during World War II and the Nazi halocaust. Even though the plot of this story takes place during one of the darkest times in the world's history, this movie tells a tale about a father's love for his family. The main character's name is Guido, the father of a five year old boy. He convinces his son that the concentration camp is a game that they are playing to win a real army tank which is the boy's favorite toy. Even among the death and horror that was present in the concentration camps, Guido was able to preserve his son's innocence and also keep him alive by hiding him in the barracks of the camp. Many movie fans shy away from foreign films because they have subtitles, or their over all composition is in a very different, and sometimes confussing style. This, however is one that you should not miss. It is funny, horrifying, touching, and suspenceful. It is about an Italian Jew who is taken to a concentration camp with his young son in WWII. To keep his son alive, he tells his son that it is all a game -- a silence game, or hide and seek, or a see-how-long-you-can-go-without-eating game. Driven by the desire to win the game, his son becomes quite good at remaining invisible to the Germans. The most remarkable trait this film possesses is that it is funny in parts, without compromising the seriousness and utter horror in other parts.
