Letter to Ebay by Art Farkas (2007, Paperback)

This book is a GREAT "rainy day" read. The author, Paul Meadors, shows an almost "Far Side" sense of humor throughout the book. In fact, it is this off the wall sense of humor that starts everything in the writing of this book. As Mr. Meadors points out, he was sitting at home one night, babysitting, and was very tired of listening to the kids musical group...the Wiggles. So to entertain his two daughters (and maintain his sanity) he suggested to the girls that they all see what their uncle (his brother-in-law) had up for sell on eBay. Well Mr. Meadors fired off some off-the-wall questions to his brother-in-law about the ceramic sculpture, "The Last Supper", that he had up for sell. The two brothers-in-law had a good laugh, but the story didn't end here. Instead, Mr. Meadors was encouraged to do this sort of thing more.

Thus was born the alternate ego, ART FARKAS. Paul Meadows would teach by day (in a 5th grade California classroom). But at night he would don the secret identity of Art Farkas and surf the internet highway of eBay seeking out unsuspecting sellers to take part in his demented correspondence. This correspondence would explain his bizarre plans for the sellers' products as he asked questions for their help in his schemes. For example, he asked some of the following questions:

"Will my grandmother be able to haul the bongos (the seller's product) down to the corner to play to passersby for spare change, OR will she need some sort of carrying device due to being to heavy for her to carry?" "Will the bird feeder hold enough alcohol to get birds drunk?" And one of my favorites..."Is the animal trap suitable for catching an 84 year old man?"

Yet, of even more hilarity, are the sellers' response to these correspondences. As we the readers see, these sellers definitely hold to the old salesman's credo --- "THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT!"

My favorite seller's response dealt with the selling of a NEW LARGE CAT IN THE HAT STUFFED ANIMAL. Mr. Farkas explains to the seller in his e-mail query that he and his old high school buddies liked to yearly douse down stuffed animals with gasoline, set them on fire, and drag them behind their SUVs. The questions that Mr. Farkas had for the seller were:

"Do you believe your Cat in the Hat would easily light on fire?" But he doesn't stop there. He then asks the seller..."would its limbs (or hat) disintegrate or simply fall off" after becoming detached from the SUV and lying upon the roadside?

And in this case, I believe the seller came up with the "crown jewel" of an answer to Mr. Farkas' queries:

"Fires yet I have not set, no fires have I started.
And if this cat were to be lit, I'd just be brokenhearted.
But a sale's a sale and after all, he's really not alive,
So light him up if burn he must at twenty-four ninety five!"

In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book. It is a MUST read! It will bring a smile to your lips, a lightness to your heart, and a scratching of your "NOGGIN'."
