BBC at its Best!

Island at War is an excellent fictional account of what everyday life and love was like on the Channel Islands during the German occupation which lasted throughout most of World War 2. One can count on the usual amount of military action, but this mini-series probes deeply into the lives of the British Subjects functioning under German rule. The details extend from the shop keeper sleeping with her German soldier supplier, to the young spy who happens to be the son of a local Island official. All in all a wonderful piece of work in which the reality of war is brought home, not just as a matter of horrific violence, but also the reality of survival and accommodation with an overwhelming force. One may surprised to see the human face of the German military as well as their chivalrous side when dealing with people they regarded as their "racial" equals. You may well find this quite an enlightening experience in more ways than one.Lire l'avis complet...

Germans on the Channel Islands~ Very GOOD~

PLOT: Germans take over the FICTIONAL CHANNEL Island of St. Gregory (aka) Jersey & Gurnsey Islands taken over by the Germans during World War 2~

1940 and with the massive evacuation of Jews and Locals from the Channel Island of St. Gregory (fictional name for Jersey Island) before the Germans arrive~ soon the Germans roll in with little stuggle since there was no battle for it~ story focus on several local families. Shot on the isle of Mann the scenery is lovely~ locals are soon hiding 2 local soldiers who came back to obtain war info for England. Soon one is killed by the Germans as a spy and one is hiding right under the local German nose, a Jewish girl with very blonde AND AYRAN LOOKS~ soon is being pursued by a German is very attracted to her~ but is also busy hunting down the few Jews left on the island, a young german flyer falls in love with the daughter of a man he killed while bombing the harbor~ the characters are very good. The Germans are made more human with their interaction with the locals~ the writers must have been real woman haters because the local woman all very excellent characters all do a sudden turn around and whore for the Germans for one reason or another~ leaves the entire plot and ending sadly lacking~ I GIVE IT A 3 OUT OF 5 FOR EXCELLENT SCENERY~ VERY GOOD ACTING BUT THE ONLY THING LACKING IS A GOOD PLOT~

Excellent! Well-acted and historically fascinating.

Island At War is an excellent PBS series that is both historically informative and shows the effect that war and invasion can have on people. The characters are very engaging and the series effectively captures the look and feel of that time. I really enjoyed it very much!Lire l'avis complet...

Buy it.

The drama and acting are as good as it gets. Very engaging stories of what a German occupation really meant. Some of the Germans are great people you would love to know in a setting without the war.

A Brilliant Series!

One of the best WWII dramas I've seen. Characters are completely fleshed out and varied, story line is super engaging and it hooks you right from the beginning of the first episode. This is brilliant drama, and they don't come around very often.Lire l'avis complet...

A truly Exceptional Mini Series!!!!

This mini series, produced by the BBC is simply put, exceptional. It details the occupation of the Channel Islands during WWll. For me what set this series apart was I felt as I was living the experience with them, both English and German. There is no miltary action however you feel as if you were there. You watch as both sides interact and you become part of it all somehow. Very few films have ever done that to me. I loved watching it the 7th time more then I did the first. It is a great series. It is NOT intended however for younger children. There is a nude and a firing suuad bit in itLire l'avis complet...

Island At War

A very good series about WWII in England during WWII. This movie has a fictional name but it is supposed to be what happened on the Channel Islands.

Tells the history of the Channel Islands during WWII in an engaging way. The characters ALL work to tell the history so my 7th grader gets it.

Right title

History lesson told in a personable way. Actors became real, depicting a time and place ravaged by war.

How the few English that fell to German domination survived WW II.

Beautifully presented with excellent characters, interesting sidelight to WW II.
