The 1951 Treasury of Humorous Quotations (Esar & Bentley) quotes George Bernard Shaw as saying: ‘England and America are two countries separated by the same language.’ Equally, it could be said that England and American are two countries separated by a common hymnody!
It is therefore useful for musicians on this side of "The Pond" to know what hymn tunes are used in the British Isles and other parts of the Commonwealth to stanzas of hymns that we share in common.
