Fine traditional singing and banjo, at a great price: 2 LPs on one CD.

While Hedy West's later recordings, after she moved to England and then to Europe, may be better (some are just superb), these two debut albums, made in 1963-1964 when Hedy was just 25 years old, are much better than the Unterberger review suggests. She plays the banjo with confidence, originality and skill, and her singing shows real feeling for the meaning of the songs, which she mostly learned from her grandmother and great-uncle. Long unavailable, the two LPs included on this inexpensive CD should not be passed up by any lover of traditional Appalachian music, particularly as presented by a unique woman banjoist.Lire l'avis complet...

If you love American folk music, this is a must for your collection.

For those who have an interest in the folk revival this is a must-have CD. Hedy West brought well-researched, often hard-edged performances of American and English-speaking European songs to the fore. She especially appealed to English audiences, and probably gained more fame there than at home. Her renditions of folk music also provides today's performers with excellent lyrics and interpretations.Lire l'avis complet...
