Should be required reading by all Americans
John Lewis is a true American hero. This memoir by him and Michael D'Orso lends a firsthand view of the kind of courage it took to take on Jim Crow racism and change society for the better.
As one of the "Big Six" organizers of the 1963 March on Washington, Lewis went way beyond that demonstration. He survived numerous brutal beatings and jailings. The courage and faith it took to deal with the physical and mental abuse at the hands of white racists boggles the mind.
This is not just a story about Lewis. He worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders and details interesting anecdotes about their work and behind-the-scene maneuvers. The Freedom Bus Rides chapter is compelling and frightening. It was interesting to find out that people surrounding King didn't want him to go on those rides in 1961 because they feared he would be killed.
A life well lived for all of us. This book should be read by all Americans.Lire l'avis complet...

Interesting but much too long
Needed for school. Good historical account of one person's experiences, but way too long. About 530 pages--should have been half that.
