Amazing amount of power and functions , but outdated

It has an overwhelming capability , keyboard feels HP quality , can do anything you throw at it and if you never used one before , it has a steep learning curve , having said that , the screen is outdated , not as clear as other calculators, it is a little bulky , thick and comparing it to the Prime G2 I bought , the prime is a much more advanced calculator , color , touch screen , easy to access the contents . I bought the 50G for nostalgic reasons , for curiosity . It keeps me busy during Covid days .... if you need a powerful graphic calculator the Prime G2 is clearly the way to go . Same price and much better , I will also say that the Prime is outdated ... low resolution small screen . The HP app for cell phones is the best interface . I find that putting it on an iPad gives it a great size , nice keys and all touch screen . It definitely feels that the mechanical key calculator days are over . Anything you pick today will be a collectors item in 10 years . HP has basically 2 people working in the department supporting calculators . Lire l'avis complet...

HP 50g Calculator

The HP 50g is the best scientific calculator ever produced (HP Prime more powerful and extremely faster, but for routine calculator programs and ease of use, the 50g still gets my vote, especially since it does not use rechargeable batteries). The TI cx calculators are more powerful and extremely faster, but use rechargeable batteries - ugh- and the programming is not as nice) . In my opinion, the best competitive scientific, graphing calculators are not even in the same class as the HP 50g -- the HP 50g is far superior.

The HP 50g supports the RPN operating system which is, by far, best calculator operating system available. The HP 50g can accomplish almost anything, if not anything, that can be expected of a scientific, graphing calculator. The programming language is not as intuitive (user-friendly) as on some other calculators, but allows more power and flexibility.

The greatest weakness of this calculator is the keyboard quality and durability. The keyboard has been greatly improved over the HP 49g+ keyboard, but whether it is up to former HP quality is questionable -- my calculator keyboard is losing some keyboard crispness after only a year of use.

I have always been partial to HP calculators because I am a scientist, and the superior scientific power of HP calculators has been the deciding factor. In the past, HP calculators have been substantially more costly than competitive calculators, but have been worth more due to their superior mathematical algorithms, scientific power, and overall mechanical quality. Now, the HP 50g is competitive in cost, if not cheaper, than the best competitive scientific, graphing calculators, is much more powerful for scientific and mathematical usage, but is not obviously superior in mechanical quality.

I would point out that integrations are slower on this calculator than on the TI-89 and later TI's, and double integrations are practically useless compared to the TI-89 and later TI's. The speed differential is about 100X slower for double integrations than for the TI-89. I've had to do many quite complicated double integrations over the past year and have found the HP-50g to be useless for practical reasons.

Hewlett Packard 50g Graphic Calculator - a Book

I am graduate of the HP41CV/CX school of programmable calculators and waited for a calculator with a multi-line screen and more muscle for large programs. I thought the HP48 was it, but was disapointed that text and data operations in the 48 were too anemic for me. I wanted to have prompts (or function keys) for input and at least four lines of "labelled" outputs at a time for the results. Now, twenty-plus years after the demise of old faithful HP41, along comes the HP50g. Glad I waited.
Now let's get to the book review. Just bought an new HP50g and the documents provided leave much to be desired. I bought this guide to learn how to use the calculator. It has 110 pages and is well written for a guide that is not produced by a professional publisher. I am about one-third of the way through the book and find some of the new concepts tough to grasp. I have to read a portion two or three times before understanding it. Don't get me wrong, this calculator ain't no four-function toy. It is one son-of-a-gun to learn and this guide makes it easier. Pros: the guide organizes the information in a meaningful way (HP take note). It also explains the whats ('and whys') of the calculator pretty thoroughly. Cons: not enough examples (at least in the early sections) to illustrate the lessons being explained, and it needs a glossary of new terms for those of us new to the HP 48/49/50 calculator. Also, an index would be good. One last nit to pick: The guide is published using one-column per page. I would have preferred two columns per page. Most of us only grasp about 40 characters at a time while reading. e.g. newspapers and novels. Text lines six-plus, inches long are harder to read. Added to a difficult subject matter, I need all the help I can get.
Bottom line: Next to the guide's Table of Contents, is an aviators/sailors, Wind Triange program with prompts and annotated (labelled) outputs. My quest for the right calculator and this guide are vindicated. If you have an HP50g, get this guide and a copy of the HP49 Advanced User's Reference Manual (free online). The reference manual describes the calculator and its command set. This guide explains 'how' to use the calculator.

Very capable machine

Personally the Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) capability and very deep stack are the things I value most because they make complex calculations easier.. The learning curve is a bit steep compared to the HP Prime and the display is monochrome and not backlit but for everyday engineering use I think its hard to beat. You just need to learn to use it. Since it is discontinued I bought an extra as a backup since I think it will be my main calculator for a long time.Lire l'avis complet...

THE PINNACLE - EVERYTHING YOU WILL EVER NEED IN ONE UNIT

The HP 50G is one of the greatest scientific calculators ever made. I have used numerous other units including the HP 42S, HP 35S, HP 32SII, HP 41CV, HP 41CX, HP 15C, HP 48GX, and the HP PRIME, and I would have to place the HP 50G in the top 3 along side the HP 48GX and the HP 42S.

The unit is immensely powerful and can handle anything thrown at it. The layout is very well thought out, the keyboard quality is very good, and the color scheme looks very inspiring and very "Engineering." Compared to the HP 48GX, another timeless classic, the HP 50G is much faster ant touts considerably more computing power.

The unit is COMPLETE - it contains EVERYTHING that any real Engineer will ever need.

Hewlett Packard 50g Graphic Calculator

I did decide to buy this calculator, just after I sawn explanations about this HP50G on youtube, it was some lessons about the stack, in RPN mode, it is possible, with this calculator, to see ALL the levels of the stack, to swap x and y as usual, and also : roll up, roll down, Edit each variable for each level, to modify it, etc.. a powerful calculator; with a total vision of the stack ! in comparison, we can only see the first level (X) on old calculators like HP 25, 35, 11C etc . . .
When I received it, some days ago, I did succeed to perform what I did see on the net, and some more examples : calculus in exact or, approximate mode, for fractions, approximate evaluations,
to set the flags in the mode menu, to perform each calculus the best as possible.
What I do not like, is the explanations in the manual : they are not easy to understand, not a lot of examples, and it is the reason why I also bought the Definitive User's guide to the HP 48g/49g/50g. Today, I also read about tutorials about HP50G on HP web site, (they are good) to try to understand this powerful machine that I did buy with curiosity, because I am electronics teacher, and I really like to make calculus for electronics signals : alternative, rectfied alternative, circuits with transformers and rectifiers (diodes) , integration, derivation, amplifiers...
What I like with this calculator HP50G is the large display, the quality of the keyboard, the MODE menu, where it is possible to set the way resutls are displayed : exact , approximate, one or more than one line (for fractions) .
Well, I know that it will take a while before I understand the essential about programs, and the whole possibilities of this calculator.
finally, I recommend to others people to purchase the HP50G, I also like the Financial menu, where it is possible to perform Time Value of Money, as you can do it with a financial calculator.
Why I like calculators ? because they did help me to obtain my diplomas, especially for mathematics and electronics degrees, it gave me sureness about my calculus, and when I remember the time (14 years old) that I only had a piece of paper and a pencil to calculate, I also remember that I was never sure about the result. Calculators did provide me certitude about my work.

So Far So Good!

I bought this calculator because my 48GX shot craps and for $85 this was a great price. The calculator so far has performed well. I do have a few issues with it: 1. the manual has no index and does not describe everything, unlike the 48GX manual; 2. the keys are different in the sense of the amount of pressure requirement to make sure they are pressed compared to the 48GX; 3. the key layout is significantly different; 4. the case is a magnetic clasp as opposed to the zippered case of the 48GX. I like the zipper better.

These issues are minor and will only take time to get used to, but they are issues you would most likely not know until after you purchased the item. I am hoping there is a resource online that better explains the functionality of the calculator (HP are you listening/reading?).

Otherwise, I like the calculator. It is lighter than the 48GX and I have not yet explored the connection and functionality of connecting it to a computer. Nor have I fully explored all features of the calculator, but I would not expect anything less than the 48GX.

If possible, I will update after I have explored additional features. Hope this helps in your decision!

HP 50g Graphing Calculator

I decided to buy the HP 50g Graphing calculator because it was the one that offered me what I was looking for at the lowest price, I was looking for a calculator capable of solving large lyneal systems, differential equations, integrals, derivates, and allow me to enter any type of equation and give me the solution or solutions to it, I also needed a calculator in which I could write my own functions and store them in it. Those were the basics I needed. Now, this item also offers a lot of other great characteristics, like a SD card slot, infrared port, USB port, serial port, text editor, alarm clock, 2D and 3D graphing options, big display, and so on. In my opinion it's a great calculator for engineer students and proffesionals, with a friendly interface and error alerts that makes it's usage fairly easy for advance users.Lire l'avis complet...

Great RPN calculator

The calculator was received exactly as advertised - almost zero usage. There were no scratches or and blemishes to be found. After adding batteries, which were not included, the calculator performed a full memory reset.

The display contrast is still like new.

Being brought up on the RPN logic since high school, I haven't been able to transition myself to algebraic mode. Therefore, upgrading to another HP calculator was the only logical option.

The purist could argue that the 'enter' key is both too small and not in the right location. It takes a little time to adjust but it certainly wasn't a show stopper for me. The calculator was HP's last high end programming/graphing calculator - and, the functionality is more than anyone could use.

Glad to have this one. Hoping that it will last a 'few' more years.

HP 50g Super Calculator

HP's latest in a long line of scientific/engineering calculators. There is just about nothing this calculator cannot do. You can save and load programs from an SD card. It has IR and USB interfaces so you can collect data in the field and d/l it into your computer. I'm a fan of RPN but you can set it to "algebraic" (text really) if you want to. Yep, there are actually games for it too. If you want to update, you can d/l new firmware from HP. Now, the only warning. Don't let your batteries (operating and backup) go dead for extended periods of time. You can lose your firmware and brick the calculator. I did that and my only recourse was to get another one (used). But during the time I had my first one, it's been dropped, stepped on, beaten up and really roughly treated. Still have hope of getting it back to working. My only wish is that HP would make it more connective to external devices like TI has done. I was a high school science teacher for 34 years and taught everything except AP Chemistry. Yes, all the other AP sciences too. This calculator never failed me (bricked it after I retired). I would recommend it. Note: It is banned for AP exams because of the IR transfer and alphanumeric capabilities but the receive is crippled to only 4 inches.Lire l'avis complet...
