Brian Setzer - The Guitar of Brian Setzer (DVD, 2006)

There are a few Brian Setzer DVDs out there, this is the only one with him in it that I know of. It was shot in the early 90's, so he looks young. I consider myself an intermediate to advanced player, and play out professionally. Was looking to pick up some of his licks. Beginners will have a hard time following this pace. Allthough he takes it slow, and describes each peice, you need to have some moving fingers to follow and knowledge of passing chords. The dvd beats out the original VHS, with the slow motion feature. The tabs on screen are illegible, and the book has all the tabs, but you need good eyesight as its small print. Overall, I got a good sense of where he is coming from, how he approaches his style, what his influeneces are. I am years away from mastering this, but I allready picked up some cool tricks. If you like Setzer, get it, even if you just watch him wail away.Lire l'avis complet...

Guitar of Brian Setzer.

I saw this video years ago, and was happy to find it again in DVD format. This is a great lesson from a great guitar player, and he has a lot of fun showing you some of his tricks. The only negative about it is that it was made in 1992, and Brian is a much better and more versital player today. I don't think there is any type of music that he couldn't play and work into his big band sound. Just listen to his rhythm playing on any of his albums over the last few years; those are some complicated progressions and he sounds like a swing player from the 40's. I just wish he would make an updated DVD to show more of what he's doing lately.Lire l'avis complet...

My favorite DVD

Setzer takes you through a few of his songs VERY slowly and teaches each part of the song. He's a really cool guy and it's fun just to watch him play.

The dvd shows tablature but it isn't readable on screen. The tabs are included as a pdf I think. And they're printed inside the jacket also. So 4/5.

His technique is unique in that he fingerpicks and then switches to flatpicking within the solo. This is a little tricky. But the chord voicing and soloing he teaches is just a blast! It's really not too technical and I was playing along within minutes.

I've watched it a couple dozen times and it's alot of fun. Keep rockin'!

Brian Setzer - The Guitar of Brian Setzer (2006, DVD)

This DVD gives an overview of some of Brian Setzer's playing techniques, inlcuding his approach to alternating fingerpicking and plectrum playing, how he creates more interesting rhythm guitar lines by adding lead lines and notes within chords, and some of his approaches to string-bending techniques.

I think that this DVD, and most any pro-player's instructional DVD, is more useful from the standpoint of giving a larger picture of how they approach the instrument than showing detailed instruction of a few specific passages, and usually the playing on these kind of DVD's are above the technical ability of the casual player (and this DVD is no exception).

This is a great DVD in that it shows how complete Brian Setzer's playing is. A brilliant rockabilly and swing guitar player who has great tone, and has a really fantastic awareness of how to vary his tone, just by switching pickups and changing his picking technique.

Rockabilly Rules!

This is a wonderful "Hot Licks" dvd. Setzer breaks down "Too Hip, Gotta Go" by the Stray Cats and teaches you his styling for the song. (he forgot the chorus though. but it's nothing hard to figure out at all.) The camera is a split screen concentrating on his fret hand with a PIP in the upper left corner showing his strumming hand. Setzer plays quite a bit of songs and teaches you licks that he did in the songs through out the dvd plus his "chickin' pickin'" technique.

Special features include a biography of Setzer, selected discography, recomended music to listen to, all the examples Setzer teaches you in slow motion and, a booklet of tablature and sheet music full of all the licks he taught you.

Definately worth the money. If you like rockabilly or Setzer's jazz/50's rock'n'roll style, then grab this dvd asap!

Great Rockabilly Guitar Class with the master!!

I have this video in VHS format and I got it since it first came out many years ago under the original Arlen Roth Hot Licks Series. Thankfully the rights have been acquired by Music Sales, who has reissued many of them in DVD format. Being that DVD is a more convenient medium nowadays I decided to buy it again. It's got so much material and offer such great insight into this monster player's style that I still haven't learnt it all after all these years. Brian is a great teacher with a great sense of humor (and style obviously). Highly recommended for students wanting to delve into early Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly and even Jazz styles (there's a great lesson on chord inversions).Lire l'avis complet...

Setzer rocks yo ass.

Awesome DVD. Very informative, easy to follow, great content. I've always messed around with this type of playing but this is some serious stuff. A must for every guitarist.

Good for the novice

I like the way Brian presents the licks and his music. Good camera work. I am a BIG fan of his music and the guitarist. I think it could have provided a better "look" if he had been more at ease in this instruction, but his chops are there. Very glad I got it.Lire l'avis complet...
