Garmin nüvi 760

I ended up buying the nuvi 760 model. I have an Acura GPS navigation system I purchased in my MDX a few years ago that was used many times during club soccer trips throughout the western US states. It saved us many times on every trip locating parks, playing fields, hotels, restaurants and the occasional medical facility. I purchased the nuvi 760 for its portability to be able to move from vehicle to vehicle with ease. (Can’t do that with the factory installed Navi in the MDX) Also for the price of the unit and the ease and cost of updating maps. MDX GPS cost over $2k and a new DVD disk cost several hundred dollars to update maps. While the graphics are better in the Acura system, the basic functions in nuvi 760 work just as well as the more costly unit. What I like the most about the nuvi 760 is the “live traffic” function that alerts of oncoming hazards and its ability to navigate around these areas if you choose. Also its accuracy in estimating arrival time. I know when I leave home in the AM within +- 2 minutes if I will be late for work. Some of the things I don’t like about this unit: 1. Time it takes to acquire satellite and load maps. At least once I drove .5 miles before it was ready to go, inputting an address as you navigate traffic not safe. 2. The cost to add MSN Direct antenna and live traffic almost doubles cost of the unit. 3. The ability for the nuvi 760 to tune in to an FM station on your car radio not as simple as it should be. Overall I am quite happy with my purchase. The Bluetooth function simple and easy to set up. The basic function of navigating turn by turn from point a to b, exceptional ,regardless if it is two miles or two thousands it is right on.Lire l'avis complet...

Garmin nuvi 780

We purchased the nuvi to help us on a trip from Bluffton Ohio to Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. My wife and I are finding the nuvi very helpful and accurate in finding specific locations, fuel stations, food, hotels. We purchased a used diesel dump truck to use on our property in B.C., and planned on having a pleasure trip as well as ferry the truck back to B.C. The trip started by flying from Palm Springs Calif to Detroit where we used the navi to locate relatives we were visiting in Detroit area for a couple of days. We rented a vehicle at detroit airport, hooked up the navi and found all the locations with ease. The navi even routes you around traffic jams which are several in Detroit area during the rush hour. We picked up the truck in Ohio and drove back to detroit area for another couple of days. Again nuvi routed us around all traffic jams and we located additional relatives. We finally departed detroit and things seemed to be going great for the first leg of the trip until we were 275 miles and the truck fuel system started acting up. The nuvi found the closest Ford dealer in Joliet IL. We fixed the truck in a couple of hours, we thought and again continued to move on. Well another 200 miles we encountered the same problem. Nuvi again found us the next Ford dealer in Iowa City. We are still in Iowa city, where we tried to leave yesterday and made it only 5 miles out of town when the same problem started again after spending $1,490 at the local Ford dealer in Iowa city. Again nuvi was accurate in getting us off the interstate and locating back roads, the only roads we could travel at the snail pace we were traveling at with the same fuel problem. The only thing I can comment on about things that could be better with the nuvi is to be able to review the actual route ahead of time like a view list. This would allow you to take alternate route, if necessary. In our case with the truck not able to run faster than a couple MPH we would like to review the list of roads to make sure our route eliminated the interstate.Lire l'avis complet...

some improvements, some setbacks

This is the second GPS unit I have owned. After reading countless reviews on many products I selected this one since it was lower cost due to its out of production status, but had the features I wanted;… text to speech, blue tooth for hands free phone, live traffic information, and a reputation for quick start-up finding all the satellites it needs to navigate. Garmin also has a good reputation. How does it work? Well, the start-up time is affected by how long ago the last time you used it and if your position has changed much since then. In general it is satisfactory on that score. At first, the text to speech was weak, but a downloaded update improved it to the point I am satisfied. I have not tried the live update feature yet as I am waiting for a long trip to test it. The sensitivity to the gps satellites is great. This unit works inside my house which helps when I am doing planning. I also like the MP3 storage [sandisk card]. I am able to load several hours of music to this device. That said the fm transmitter is poor in my car, a Toyota camery. I can use it if I plug a 3rd party device [Radio Shack] that works from the earphone jack on the Garmin that does the fm transmitter work. This will make it possible for the Garmin unit to interrupt my music playback with navigation instructions. My experience with Garmin tech support has been good so far. After you go through the phone maze and the waiting you get an American English speaking person who, in my experience is informed and patient. There is not much of that available these days. The only improvements I would want to see is: 1. Being able to organize "favorites" into folders and 2. Having computer software that allows you to plan trips and upload them to the unit.Lire l'avis complet...

Overall nice, but not always accurate.

Overall nice, but not always accurate.

After I paid for the Garmin Nuvi 780, I paid for the map upgrade and the roads around my area were still not up-to-date.

The Blue Tooth feature makes this very nice to use.

For an extra subscription fee, the MSN Direct add-on option allows me to get traffic updates, see movie times, get gas prices, stock quotes, news updates,

You can listen to MP3 files and Audio books, and it has a few other extras as well.

The unit doesn't always pick the most direct route and it doesn't know where the "high-crime rate" neighborhoods are located, but I don't know if any GPS has that feature yet.

The TTS (Text To Speech) Voice feature is very nice as well.

I can also go to maps.google.com on my home PC and download routes to the GPS via a USB 2.0 cable which comes with the unit.

Even though it has some minor issues, for the money value, I would probably buy this product again or the next higher unit available, the Garmin Nuvi 880, which has speech recognition and a detachable steering wheel remote control.

Garmin nüvi 780 Car GPS Receiver - Pro's & Con's

The product, like any other Garmin product is excellent and the features I most enjoy about it is the FM transmission of directions to the vehicle audio system which makes it much clearer to hear than that of other models without the facility. The blue tooth facility is also a great help as far as road safety is concerned as one don't have to reach for the phone etc.

The only thing I felt lacking from it (and I obviously was aware of it prior to the purchase) as compared to other makes like the TomTom's are the following.
The minimal route options i.e. only select between fastest or shortest routes, while other makes have many more options.
The lack of setting one's own speed limit, irrespective of the actual road speed limit, to warn one that one is exceeding one's own set limits as well as warnings when the legal limits are reached.

Otherwise a great product

Garmin 780 GPS

This was an upgrade for a stolen 760 unit. The unit is very much the same as the 760. This one does have the MSN FM receiver where as the 760 has the FM traffic receiver.

There is a lot more alavable with the MSN connection though is appears it will cost a little bit more than the traffic that comes on the 760. The 780 is the same size and has the same functions as the 760. Both work very well and are not annoying if you get off route for some reason. The automatic adjustment from day to night is a nice feature also.

I have had a few issues with lost voices, dictionaries and some boot up problems. All of which are easy to correct, but none the less are annoying. I have contacted Garmin about the troubles and they assure me that they will be addressed in the next firmware upgrade. FWIW, upgrading the firmware and downloading extras are super easy with this unit. It really is plug and play!

Overall I give this unit a GOOD rating. Mostly due to the small annoying problems I have had. I do think it is a very good unit and Garmin customer service is top notch. I would not hesitate to buy another Garmin product nor would I hesitate to buy another 780.

Better than any current Nuvi, has MP3 player...

All of the current GPS dont have a MP3 player, dont allow external sound (audio) out, dont have true high map detail (newer GPS' map detail levels, were reduced, to give grater map update speed (they could have used a faster processor but that would cost more)). Has a quicker and better screen speed to recognize user input (most current Nuvi's are slow to respond to touching the map or tapping on virtual buttons, making it so you have to do it again, of coarse while driving).
Bottom line, newer aint better, just cheaper...

If only the touch screen functionality were better, it would be 5 stars

I really like most of what this GPS has to offer. It moves quick, starts up quick enough and recalculates quick enough as well. This is most of what you need out of a GPS and for that, it gets good marks. My main issue is the responsiveness of the touch screen. At first, I didn't think it worked. It took some getting used to, but it only seems to respond when my fingernail is touching the screen, not so much just my finger. Typing an address is something you need to do frequently, so I think it carries a heavy weighting. Enough to knock a star off of the overall rating.Lire l'avis complet...

It will help you finding you way .

I had pilot330 before I have nuvi 780.It load map every time I turn on and sometimes it slows. It has more features. It comes with msn which suppose to get information. but MSN doesnot cover some part of the states. I was disappointed about that. I hope they will do cover soon where I live. Apart from that it is very useful and has better signal even under building.
Sometimes it shows me that I am out of the road more often than pilot does. I realize something after using navigator that I need to use my head and eyes additional to it. I may say you can rely on GPS 90%. most of the time they did good job. but still they can mess up address location.
I did not regret to have Germin GPS anyway.

Garmin nuvi 780 Car GPS Receiver

I owned several GPS and always enjoyed Garmin products. Nuvi 780 is somewhat disappointed compare to the older Nuvi 660 even I downloaded and upgrade firmwares to the most recent date.
PROS:
- Bluetooth sync very quick, but the MIC is not as good as 660.
- Screen display is clear and bright.
- Map is up-to-date. It says 2009 but.. well almost, some new streets in my town are not existed in Nuvi's Map even they are complete 2 years ago.
- MP3 Player is OK if you can connect to your car's audio system using Aux jack.

CONS:
- Voices of both Jack and Jill are choppy, Nuvi 660 handles this much better.
- Volumn is not loud as 660 so you will have hard time to hear if you have window roll down.
- The FM transmitter is terrible, I am still unable to sync with FM channel based your the unit recommendation.

Overall, if you are looking for one now then go ahead for newer model... may be a bit more investigate and $$ but at least you won't be disappointed with bugs in this unit. I gave it as "Average" rating. Sorry Garmin, you needs to fix and improve these issues before the customers head for Tom-Tom or Navigon...
