Good reception with antenna, but turns its self off and on

This GPS is temperamental. It shuts itself off, freezes up, the screen isn't always responsive, there is no way to brighten the screen and in the day time it's difficult to read. The display brightness is on high, but the low and high setting are the same.
HOWEVER, it is one of the few GPS's that has an portal for an external antenna so that it will work in an RV with a cabover. With an external antenna it NEVER loses a satellite signal even in the forest.

No battery

The unit does what it is supposed to to get you from points A to B. It also plays mp3 files, which is nice on long trips instead of searching through stations. However, there is no internal battery so it cannot stay on if you just turn the car off for even a second, like to put in gas. Just the power bump to go from run to accessory mode is enough to have to start all over again.
Also the power output of the radio connection is not powerful enough to reliably reach the car's antenna mounted on the back of the car. It does provide an audio output jack for an aux input to the radio, but my car only has usb ports.

I recommend the NUVI 5000

I recommend the 5000.
I've been using mine for a while and I haven't gotten lost yet.
The only drawback is updating maps.
On Ebay the price for the 5000 is the same as the price for the smaller units in the retail market. Buy here not there. Buy the big one. It's easy to see and the interface is excellent.
I rarely use the FM transmitter. I listen to talk radio. But the unit is loud enough to hear over my noisy truck so the fm transmitter isn't needed for directions. The SD slot is good to have with the FM transmitter. Its easier to setup and use the music interface than it is to link a bluetooth device.
Overall if your going to buy one get a NUVI and if you can, Spring for the big one. You won't regret it.

Nuvi 5000

It works good but there are significant screen scratches that were not visible in the posted pic. And not one or 2 scratches but lots of scratches in a few areas. Like it was used in some sort or commercial vehicle where the driver had dirty hands. Overall for the price i paid i'm happy.Lire l'avis complet...

Great product, if you need a Garmin with a/v input

This is the only Garmin that supports an A/V input (e.g. a rear view camera). I wanted a GPS that can support a rear view camera and I since I have all the latest Garmin Maps for my country this is the ideal GPS for me.

Pros:
- Big Screen
- A/V input
- Easy to use and install new maps

Cons:
- No battery - has to be plugged in to external power
- thicker and heavier than newer models with same screen size

Needs Garmin nuvi cradle to operate to manufacturer's specifications

The Garmin nuvi 5000 requires a separate cradle to operate to specifications such as daylight visibility, integration with external A/V (audio visual AV) devices such as backup cameras. These are the two reasons I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 5000.

My advice to anyone purchasing a standalone Garmin nuvi 5000 is make sure you have the requisite cradle in order to test this on arrival, otherwise you don't know if the this meets your needs or not.

Since Garmin no longer sells these, either find the cradle on eBay or purchase through a reseller such as
http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-nuvi-5000-cradle-replacement.html

I ended up purchasing the Magellan Roadmate 1700LM for the same price brand new. Better deal. All depends upon your own requirements and application. I like the life time map updates of the Magellan and it has built-in AV integration for the backup camera.

Best of luck and happy hunting in 2012

An older product that fit my needs

The primary reasons for purchasing the nuvi 5000 were to address a significant blind spot when reversing in our otherwise excellent 2010 Honda Accord Coupe. The 5000 was one of the few GPS sysems that had a video input so that I could incorporate a rear view camera, and also satisfy my wife's recently acquired taste for navigation assistance rather than relying on a map!

The screen is bright and clear, displays plenty of detail, and when coupled with a ccd camera, provides a very good image. At just over 5" it is sufficiently large enough without taking up too much room.
The audio is significantly loud and clear through the built in speakers.
Data input is simple and only requires a minimum of manual consultation to fully exploit the unit's capabilities.

I have noticed on many known routes, if I deviate from the originally proscribed directions, the unit will recalculate in an extremely fast time frame, but will invariably add a series of unnecessary correcting turns. As an example: a shortcut I routinely follow places me back at a cross street that simply requires a left turn at the traffic light to place me back on the original route. The unit will audibly direct and display a right turn, quickly followed by two immediate left turns and then a right turn to get back on the road in the appropriate direction. If I was paranoid I would think the unit was out to get me for having the temerity to question its commands.

This unit is discontinued, but still has software and map update support on Garmin's web site. Web reviews routinely rate Garmin's products as somewhat superior to their competition. But I suppose all the manufacturers have their proponents.

As an alternative Magellan has a Road Mate 1700 product which also has a video input, but it also has a rather large 7" screen which I felt was inappropriately large for my application, but might be more suitable for yours.

A little disappointed in rearview capability

bought this GPS for two main reasons :GPS and Rearview camera display capability. There is a big disadvantage of using GPS unit without inside battery:When i turn on the ignition to start the car i have to wait about 1.5 min for GPS unit to be activated to actually see rear view from back camera. Not like on original ,factory installed rearview cameras and GPS, witch does shows the rear view at any time in reverse. The size of display is perfect.Lire l'avis complet...

Great unit, but a few quirks

First off, this unit is great for people that need a big screen. It is easy on the eyes, and simple to use. I sometimes find myself counting on the unit for simple things that I know, which kind of makes me feel foolish, but it is so fun to use that I can't help it.

Some people have complained about the lack of battery, but it retains the directions when unhooked so it is ready to use when you plug it in the next day.

The path that it sends you on can sometimes be odd, no matter how it is set up. On one trip it sent me off on a little twisting road for nine miles, only to put me back on the original road. There were no detours or road work, so I have no idea why it wanted to take the scenic route. Another trip is sent me south on the interstate when I know that the best route is north. Still, it cut 90 miles off of a 1500 mile trip, so I can't fault the directions over all.

One thing I would suggest is to make sure the firmware is up to date, as the new version is much easier to use, and seems to load faster.

I have three of these units, and one does have a hard time staying locked on to the satellites, despite using the external antenna. The other two lock on before the unit is fully started.

Overall, I am very happy with the 5000, and would recommend it to anyone.
