Good value

Etrex Legend
Easy to use for basic functions. Fast satellite acquisition after initial use in your area. Has Trouble finding satellites in heavy canopy( like all the inexpensive units) so I sometimes have to locate a thin spot in tree canopy or field and wait a few minutes.
VERY IMPORTANT: after finding satellites when you walk 50-100 feet and you’re sure you’ve got an accurate direction from your pointer make a note of the heading so you use your magnetic compass when the gps looses the satellite connection until it locks on again. Not the unit to have if you are going to be doing serious navigation in heavy canopy. I carry the Legend turkey and deer hunting and ALWAYS have a separate magnetic compass. Battery life is very good for two AA batteries and runs on rechargeable NMIH batteries. Overall I am very pleased with the Garmin Etrex

Great device - basic features, good battery life and bomb proof design.

I was looking for a small, light, low cost GPS with basic features and good battery life. I wanted a GPS to aid me in wilderness travels, hiking and general outdoor use in new areas that I did not already know well. The eTrex worked great on long weekends of occasional use with-out the need of changing the AA batteries. This is due to the very basic functions and lack luster features. Not bad, just basic. The black and white screen worked will enough but in dusk conditions I felt the screen was a little hard to read. The lack of color made the screen look "busy" when looking at areas with lots of details, roads or trails. The size is perfect - feels great in your hand. Not flimsy or too small. The size also matches a lot of point and shoot camera cases so you have lots of options on carry cases. My only and major dislike is the lack of contour lines on the maps. For cross country wilderness travel this is must! Those lines reveal all the details of land features that I use to plan routes and trails.

Overall - if you can use a basic GPS for on and off road use and you dont need great detail of the surrounding area. This is a great option. If you need custom maps or heavy detail this may not be the GPS of choice.

button malfunction

The click stick on the front of the unit toggles all ways correctly, but the push down feature did not work at all when I received it, I checked online for similar problems with other units and found that repeated pushes will sometimes repair the problem. After some time the unit began working. It still doesn't work every time I push the click stick but after several attempts, it usually works. Other than that the unit is great. and was a good price as well.Lire l'avis complet...

This etrex Ledgen was a Very expensive mistake on my part!

Buyer Beware, Software version 2.0 on this device requires updates. You will need a serial port and an old outdated computer. This unit would be be used as a museum display. I is missing the basic map called "americas marine point basemap jan 2001" is missing on this device. Very expensive mistake on my part! I have one other Etrex Legend that I love, it works but is starting to misbehave this unit was supposed to replace that device. What a bummer!

Instructions for uploading the new software to your eTrex Legend using Microsoft
Windows 95/98/NT:

1. Download the appropriate self-extracting archive file for your eTrex Legend
onto your hard drive.

2. Unzip the files in the archive by running the downloaded executable file.

3. Connect your eTrex Legend to a free serial port (Com 1, 2, 3, or 4) on your PC
with a PC interface cable.

4. Turn on your eTrex Legend and ensure the Serial Data Format is set to "GARMIN".
You can find this setting in Menu Page - Setup - Interface.

5. Change to the directory in which you unzipped the files, (i.e., C:GARMIN),
and run the update program, updater.exe. Select the appropriate serial
port and click "OK" to begin the software upload.

During the upload, the eTrex Legend's display will indicate "SWT LOADING"
The upload process should take 5-10 minutes to complete. When the upload
is completed, the eTrex Legend will reset itself and turn on normally.

Nice economical hiking / off road GPS

I have had many different handheld GPS units that I use for off roading, and I particularly like this one. Being an Etrex, it is fairly simple to use and people seem to be able to figure it out more quickly than some others. Compared to the lower lever models, it adds the ability to pan the map and includes a basic map, which is useful for reference but not great for street navigation. The newer and nicer Etrex units arhave color screens and charge via a USB port, but for the price this model really seems to fill a sweet spot. Look for a deal, and for under $50 this can be a great economical pocket sized GPS.Lire l'avis complet...

Garmin eTrex Legend - A Good Basic Beginner's Tool

The eTrex I have is an 'entry-level' device to get me started in geocaching. It is a quality unit. The newer eTrexes have more features which would make the 'treasure hunt' a little easier. My older unit requires a cable adapter to connect to a USB port on my laptop to facilitate downloading sites for geocaching. It is also a monochrome screen and a little difficult to read in the sunlight. My recommendation would be to select the newer model Legends although mine does the job quite well. It is very accurate and makes getting home a lot easier!Lire l'avis complet...

Easy to use.

This unit is very easy to figure out. Five minutes after opening the box I put it in my pocket and tracked a walk around my neighborhood. (Speed, distance, time, ...) While driving home from work I had it on the dashboard of my car and noticed it showed the exit numbers coming up on the interstate.

I have a TomTom GPS in the family vehicle. The computer software to download maps and upgrades is not very intuitive. After using the Garmin computer software I downloaded from their website I doubt I will ever buy another brand. The software was easy to setup and it recognizes the GPS model connected to the computer and searches for any updates automatically.

Great unit...great price.

Lost my previous Garmin Etrex when it was stolen while out of the country. Was so glad to pick this up for a good price. It's very easy to use...even I can do it. Battery usage is very frugal. I've been around many other GPS units and these relatively inexpensive Garmins are just as accurate as the really expensive units. Yes, I'm an avid geocacher.Lire l'avis complet...

GHarmin etrex legend GPS Receiver

Well i'm not going to say its great and i'm not going to say it's terriable. It is great for what i'm using it for geocaching. and i'm sure it will be great for marking a route whitch it pretty much does itself. the little joystick i can see willbe a problem in the future if it ever wears thin. seem it is a very important part of the unit and doesnt seem all that strong button would have been a better choice on the unit i think. So far it has been pretty good my only complaint on this device is that the boot up time to find sat's is a but disurbing, i thought it would boot faster then my home computer not so it takes about 10 minutes for it to aquire sat's WTF i say dam ok so turn it on 10 minutes before you plan your trip or whatever. So far it has been opretty dead on finding the geohunting sites so thats cool. Dont really like the serial cable and it doesnt work with windows vista good thing i have an older computer running XP id be screwed.
Ok i can go on about things i dont like but it does the job good for a beginer in leraning about GPS systems. ther are other things i could say io dont like for instance it wont work in the house but hety it for outside right. well put it in you pocket and it loses signal WTF!!
Ok enough said at least i can find the little boxes with it. and i didnt pay an arm and leg for it. So a good device for what its intended to do. time to save up for a real GPS. But i will wear this one out before i do that.

I bought this used; It works well.

I bought this for a very good price. It works well and has a map with roads unlike the much older Garmin I had before. If I buy another one of these I will spend the extra money and get one with a COLOR MAP. The gray scale map is a little hard to read. This one is pretty hard to beat for the price.Lire l'avis complet...
