Well built, like almost all Garmins

The Good

- Great screen, can see well in direct sunlight.
- Very easy interface in the GPS itself and in the Mapsource software on the PC.
- Like all Garmins, since its almost an industry standard, you can easily get maps of almost anywhere in the world. For very updated maps you probably will always have to pay, but for most countries you find sites that give standard -sometimes very undetailed- maps for free.

The Bad

- Big compared to newer models.
- I don`t like the propietary power plug, I would have prefered something more standard like what comes in the newer Garmins.
- General lack of features like bluetooth, Mp3 player, etc. for a GPS that still costs pretty much even though its an older model.

Conclusion

Compared to other GPSs - of other brands - I personally think Garmins in general are simply superior for many reasons. If we were to compare this GPS to other Garmin GPSs', I would go for a newer model. I prefer using my Nuvi 200 (one of Garmins lower-end) models rather than the c530 (which when it was sold new in stores it was a mid-range model) although the screen of the c530 can be seen better in direct sunlight.

Very Good Device at a Reasonable Price

I've been using this unit for about 2 months and am very satisfied with its performance.

I like the automatic day & night brightness feature; favorites are easy to enter & save; retrieving favorites use the spell function is a time saver. Overall it's very user friendly and easy to use without having to read much documentation (although I read it all).

Some of my dislikes: the database only gets updated every other year (I prefer annual updates); the Garmin website should be more user friendly; I'd like an audible low battery reminder (the visual one is ok but not displayed while using the map to navigate.

I recommend this unit for those who want a very good portable GPS unit at a reasonable price.

An old school reliable GPS

You may need to update maps. I had maps on an old SD card from my previous Garmin so I was ok. Newer Garmin models announce the streets by name. This one just tells you when & where to turn, but does not announce the streets by name. I like Garmin in that you are given sufficient notice about upcoming turns well ahead of time. For me, this was a terrific bargain. Yes, I know smart phones can direct you to locations,....until you lose signal! This happened to my wife when she was in the middle of nowhere. The Garmin got her back on course. This is my third Garmin.Lire l'avis complet...

Garmin StreetPilot® c530 GPS Receiver

I have a small cat rescue and frequently have to go to unfamiliar places to pick cats up or take them to their new homes. And reading a Mapquest printout while driving 65mph on the highway is for the birds.

For the most part the c530 does a very good job of getting me where I need to go. It has a couple glitches...all the newest roads or bypasses aren't in the maps, and it determines whether you "bear right" or "turn right" by how sharp the turn is. So it may tell you to bear right when you are actually turning right on a different road, or it may tell you to turn right when you are staying on the same road and it just curves sharply.

But the directions are clear, the maps are good, the price is right, and it works.

One note, I purchased it at an auction that said "1 year Garmin warranty" and "authorized dealer" and it wasn't true. However, when I filed a dispute the seller provided a 1 year warranty from them. You can't get a Garmin warranty for anything purchased at auction.

Knowing what I do now, I would be careful to avoid any listing that did advertise that they were an authorized dealer and provide a 1 year Garmin warranty since to me that indicates a dishonest seller.

Good unit, but rendered obsolete by Garmin

I'm technologically incompetetent, but have been happy with this product over about the last decade. Since I'm comfortable using it, I have no interest in anything more advanced. HOWEVER, Garmin has made it obsolete due to its limited storage /memory (a 4GB SD card), which is WAY inadequate for new Garmin maps. It's of little use unless you use old or only regional maps, which I find unfortunate and a killer deficiency ( I use old maps, which I suspect are no longer available).Lire l'avis complet...

Easy and fun to use!!

I purchased the Garmin StreetPilot c530 GPS Receiver because my husband and I were going to take a three week trip in our travel trailer.
I have to say it was really easy to use and fun to watch!! It couldn't find a couple of the addresses we put in, but that was because they were RV Parks up in the mountains far away from any large town. But, it did know where all the little towns we went through were! It even helped us find a steak restaurant in one of the towns.
One thing that we don't really like is that it thinks we live about 1/2 mile from where we do live, but we are in a relatively new area...maybe in the next update?

garmin c 530

the product worked great for the first 3 weeks or so, then crapped out completely. contacted garmin directly, they were great. did the warranty on phone that i had forgotten and tried several different ways to troubleshoot problem from my home. This failed and i sent the unit back to them..am awaiting its return..they said that the unit was actually still running but the screen was blank.. while i used it before it went blank, the unit performed well except for current road changes that it was not aware of. thesed changes showed that garmin had not updated its maps for the area in which i live....jury still out on how it works when i get it back from garmin.Lire l'avis complet...

commuting

I suddenly had to commute through LA and needed help to avoid traffic and avoid getting lost. The GPS with traffic alert is wonderful for that, it was the most recommended for what I needed. It doesn't get ALL the traffic problems though... sometimes I get stuck, but for the most part I have ways to get around them. And I do wish I could move the map around when the course is plotted out. Otherwise, I love it and use it every day! It's very intuitive and easy to use and has useful options.Lire l'avis complet...

Very happy with the StreetPilot c530

This GPS works great. As far as finding and giving routes, ease of use, size of screen, all of those kinds of things are great. There is only one thing I was slightly dissappointed in, I do wish the POI were a bit more complete and up to date. I live in a Canadian city, and I would say it probably has about two-thirds of things like banks and malls, and less than half of the restaurants, even the franchises like McDonalds, some are listed some aren't. I expect that the POI list depends on someone submitting the data, and that wasn't done.Lire l'avis complet...

Buying a refurbished Garmin GPS

The good: I liked the ease with which I was able to set up and use this GPS. It also acquired a signal very quickly... when it did work.

The Bad: After just two days usage, the GPS unit would no longer acquire a signal. I registered the product online (after the customer service folks "freed up" the serial number, as it was registered once already as a new unit). Within 24 hours of registering the unit, it would no longer work. I followed all the instructions for use and troubleshooting on the web site and in the user manual, and the GPS still would not work. I phoned Garmin, explained what I had tried (also updated all the software online) and the customer service representative gave me a return authorization number so I could send the unit back for repair or replacement.

I spend $8.25 more on the GPS to send it back, "Priority Mail" so I could insure and track the item. It's been about a week, and I don't have a GPS to use, and do not really expect to have it anytime soon. I do not necessarily "blame" Garmin, but you might think that they'd be a little more careful in allowing "refurbished" units out the door than this.

The Ugly: Looking back on it, I wish I had spent $20 more and bought a brand new unit, not that there would be any guarantee that I still wouldn't be waiting for my warranty to replace even a brand new GPS....
