garmin streetpilot c330

i'm not a huge tech head. i was just looking for a reliable, basic GPS and lucked out on this garmin at a great price....i realize that this model is no longer the newest and best, but i read alot of positive reviews about this model before i chose to buy it....and i agree with all of them. it is a solid, very easy to use GPS unit. the simple design (black w/one silver accent)is very handsome, compact and actually matched my interior dash, stylewise. The suction mount bracket is sturdy, not flimsy. the sound is clear and crisp. the image is great- at 3.5" i was impressed, never had to lean in, can see everything easily. the only nagging issue most repeated in reviews- about sunglare on the screen during the day....i never had issue with. i imagine anyone with a roof to cover, or with the gps mounted wisely, will never have that problem. i could not place mine in a position where it was a problem. i guess the reviewers were driving convertibles.
solid, sturdy, reliable, attractive, compact, simple. I rate 9 out of 10. a 10 out of 10 would be if i wanted something newer or with more features.

SIMPLE & EASY TO USE BUT NO ADVANCE CAPABILITIES

The Garmin c330 is easy to use mechanically and logically. Maps are clear, voice directions are excellent. Normal occasional map errors and weird routings, but really solid.

Lacks advance operations like for example, there is no fast way to enter current location as a waypoint. You can do it, but it is like a 12 button operation to get it in and back to the map again.

The C330 cannot identify interesting landmarks along the way easily. It requires a long transition to another set of screens in order to get that done as well.

No actual latitude and longitude is available for recording where you really are in a standard coordinate system. No knots.

The automatic map scaling is almost perfect for road navigation.

No way to see routing for going from point A to point B. It only shows it from where you are to point B. We couldn't find it.

No satellite positions and signal strengths, no bread crumbs for where you have been, occasional screwball max ever speeds, limited city name labeling (It probably assumes you basically know what city you are in), no true north headings other than the 8 cardinal directions, no magnetic course.

Overall, Garmin C330 is really good at what it is designed to do, i.e. give you road driving directions for getting from where you are to somewhere else. Good mount. Easy to lift out without hassling the suction cup. Good battery life. Good sound quality and volume, multi-language support and a good screen.

Really easy to use.

An Electronic Map Right in Your Car!

Each driver in our family has one of these units. Our teenager is so impressed with this that she persuaded a group of her friends to purchase this as a present for another friend just getting her license. Without the group contributing, the cost of the unit would have been prohibitive. The Garmin is accurate so long as you have a physical address for a location and the unit has been downloaded with map upgrades within a reasonable amount of time (a year or so). Garmin doesn't recognize short-cuts right away so it takes you on main routes from Point A to Point B. It does, however, "catch on" to a variation of a route when you alter your journey to route more familiar or preferable to you. We like best how Garmin tells you the time you will arrive (very accurate), allows you to program "favorite" destinations so that you don't have to type in an address, shows your route on a close-up or large-scale map, that you can anticipate left or right turns by hitting the "next" button (helpful to know which lane to drive in) and gives you the ability to look up restaurants, motels and other locations by category when you don't have an address or, for example, just want to find a good Italian restaurant. We least like that Garmin doesn't know new roads or names of roads (has to be plugged into your computer for downloads) or takes you on a route that seems to be longer than necessary. Oddly, it seems to take an "attitude" in its voice when you vary from the route Garmin has calculated. Our family would recommend the Garmin because the good features and its utility vastly outweigh the things we dislike about it.Lire l'avis complet...

Garmin is great for a small car owner!

I sell all kinds of GPS systems, for car and boat. I love this one. It does not take up a whole lot of space, yet it is richly packed with features!

Even though this unit was produced a few years back, Garmin continues to update it and update mapping to current versions. This is still a favorite as for someone just looking for a GPS without all of the bells and whistles this one is priced right and a very good accurate GPS.

Upstate New York Police Dept Rookies purchase these from me, they are popular with the force for their low price and ease of use. I have been told by the officers that these are "Dummy Proof". I have to agree, very easy to use!

With Gas prices soaring a GPS can be a real asset to save you time and gas. Don't waste your time and money being lost! Garmin continues to amaze me as they put out a sturdy, functional top notch product. I have very few returns with Garmin and they offer outstanding customer service.

It's not SALLI's fault...

SALLI is the name I gave the "lady" inside my GPS (Self Automated Latitude and Longitude Instructor). On a recent family trip across the country (from OH to TX), my wife and SALLI didn't quite get along. You see, the most recent Garmin map software updates aren't exactly...up to date — and that can be frustrating, but its not SALLI's fault (as I tried to explain to my wife several times). I'd say during our trip the GPS maps were about 95% accurate — which to me was pretty good. Garmin said they had software with more up to date maps but that software wasn't a free update, it was like $75. I wasn't thrilled with that response and figured I could get by for now on the software I had.

About the unit:
I was happy with everything that came with the GPS unit (i.e. car charger, mounting bracket, USB cable and carrying case). The bracket mounts on the windshield, but also comes with an adhesive base for dash mounting. However, the dash in my mini-van is slightly textured and the base would not adhere to it, so I was forced to mount it on my windshield.
The touch screen works great. The options are very useful. On my trip I was able to track my average speed, drive time, mileage count down and max speed (which my wife wasn't thrilled about when she woke up and saw that I had topped 98 in our mini-van).
We did have to manually change the time when we crossed time zones, which wasn't a huge hassle, but I was hoping it would be smart enough to automatically adjust.
Also, SALLI can be very stubborn. You see, we've driven this trip several times and we know the best route and SALLI had most of our route correct. However, a few times when we decided to override SALLI's suggested directions, instead of recognizing right away that we had taken a different route, she kept telling us to take the next exit and turnaround and go back — she did this for about 5 or 6 exits and then finally gave in to our new route.

Overall, I love this GPS unit. Its fun, its informative, its incredibly useful. If you can pick one up for less than $150 (including shipping), I'd highly recommend it. The only reason I'm giving it a "good" instead of an "excellent" is because of Garmin's map software accuracy.

Garmin StreetPilot® c330 Car GPS Receiver

What I like is when I am lost at night in an unfamiliar location. I can depend on the GPS finding a way to get home.

I love the way it recalculates when you miss a turn.

What I do not like is that it doesn't know how to find the fastest way to get from point A to Point B. When approaching an intersection between two freeways it will take you through the streets then back onto the freeway rather than keeping you on the freeway and using the ramps just 1-3 miles ahead.

There are many times it doesn't take you by freeway it prefers to use surface streets rather than freeways if it thinks is shorter in distance even if you have to travel on streets hitting 20-30 street light rather than using a freeway that parallels the surface street. I find that to be a waste of time.

I will still rate it good.

I would like after the address a button to use to continue to stay in a city instead of having to type in the city each time.

The features are endless and the short coming I'm sure will be addressed as new models are created.

The color is amazing in any lighting of the day or night.

I would buy one again when they get better.

One of the best, entry level GPS Receivers available.

For an entry level GPS Receiver, this unit is powerful, practical and very useful. I have a Tom Tom One, and this is a much better GPS in many ways (especially giving directions :-) ) Here are some of the positive points of this receiver:
* Very easy to use interface, useful out of the the box
* Aquires connection rather quickly
* Has timed, aoto shut-off feature when the unit loses power (you turn off car)
* Has excellent points of interest searching. Awesome when looking for genre stores or by categories of foood for restaurants.
* small screen is not intrusive, yet very clear, not too cluttered with info and informative
* calculating alternate routes is very easy and very accurate

Negatives:
* a bit bulky depth wise
* updating maps and points of interest is impossible to find
* voice sounds very "computerish" with limited choices
* Less bells and whistles than similar priced GPS's

Benifits of a GPS

I have had the Garmin StreetPilot C330 for a few weeks now, and have found it to be invaluable. I do various types of shows, and need to travel all over Westchester county, Conneticut and points beyond. Many times, directions from the customers are shall we say... less than accurate!!! he Garmin takes me directly from door to door. I especially like the fact that it allows for detours due to road closures/traffic congestion.

The battery operation allows me to use it away from the car to program and add locations, as well as use it for hiking as well.

One shortcomming I have noticed, is that the accuracy for turns (especially in areas where there are several roads intersecting), can be a bit confusing. Several times it has said turn in 200 feet, as I was in fact already passing the turn. Even though I have it configured to use the WAAS/EGNOS system for better accuracy, it still sometimes misses the turns.

Another shortcomming is the listing of pre-programmed locations. Today while we were out driving, we decided we wanted to stop for Mexican food. Well, let's see what the Garmin says is nearby!!! Well, we found out upon arrival, that the restaurant we were looking for went out of business 2 years ago...and I had installed the updated software a few weeks ago.

Other than these 2 problems, I have enjoyed it very much, and the real test will be a trip to Troy, New York next week!!!

Garmin StreetPilot c330 very good choice

Very helpful product but you need to apply reason to the verbal directions. Example - "Turn left, and turn left" may put you back on the frwy you just exited. It meant 'next left turning street' (not the frwy entrance which was next true left). In such situations it may 'occasionally' be confusing depending on the street configurations. Overall it is very good. Volume & brightness adjustments helpful. Bright colored graphics easy to read. Written directions at very top of screen would be easier to read if there were just a bit more space between tops of letters and edge of graphic screen. You have to develop some habits to use to best advantage. When stopping car before reaching destination, you need to select "run on battery" or you will have to input destination again when restarting. It would be good to have a short 'recent destinations' memory to select from to solve this or even "Last Destination" as a selection. Some graphic configurations have no clear meaning. One side of roadway is green & the other is (sometimes) black; WHY?? Suction mounting device not legal in CA; Garmin's alternative mount for this model very unattractive. Found much less expensive ($11.00) and more visually appealing solution in square friction pad that is very stable and less cumbersome/awkward. Suction cup on Garmin attaches to small plate in center of pad. As these are 'high theft' items, remove from dash before parking to deter alert/watchful would be thieves, esp. in high tourist areas.Lire l'avis complet...

A Good Starter GPS

I purchased this Garmin GPS because I need a GPS to locate addresses for me during work and for personal guidance as well. The Garmin has been very reliable in locating even some out of the way places, and has certainly paid for itself in the month and a half I have had it. I have chosen to not attach the holder to the windshield, as it seems to me the "sticky" would not hold over time. Additionally, I move it between vehicles. It is very convenient for me to have it ride in one of the cupholders. While I am very pleased with its overall performance, I do think Garmin could have added a place in the menu for user tips. I am still learning beyond the basics about what all it can do.
The readout is clear, and voice feature is great for guidance while driving.
The price I paid, about $140, makes it a great value.
