Good GPS,but a bit quirky

This is a nice unit, that you can use as a hand-held as well as auto use. I like that. The software loaded nicely. The audio is loud and clear. Not much choice of voices, etc....but that's ok. We've taken it out a few times, and it seems to work well. But it has a strange quirk - when you're charging, there is no display. The unit is still working, and giving audio directions....but no picture. As soon as you unplug, it's all back, though.Lire l'avis complet...

Garmin GPS are good value

Bought this used - Was able to register it - Load new Maps on it (added a 32m card). Love the features of this one - now own 2 of these. Only issues I have with these is the suction cup is not good - seems to fall off way to often so keep it close to your dash so it does not fall far. Good unit, but only get it if the 50LM isn't for you.

This is a great unit. As an owner of a driving school we use them exclusively. I've bought 6 so far. This is essentially the same as the Nuvi 50LM, but smaller. The 50LM is actually a better value and easier to use due to its screen size, but I bought this one because the 5 inch models don't quite fit within the my center console of my wife's car, which is where I like it for her purposes.

I don't recommend the LMT models, because the traffic is usually old and useless anyway. It's 2014... If you need traffic, then the GPS in your smartphone will provide more accurate traffic. (Although the Garmin is still much easier to use.)

My message to Garmin: If you don't start being a company that makes "the best navigation app for smartphones," you're going to go out of business in 5-7 years. The opportunity is there, because smart phones are still usually too small and cumbersome to type into, and most people don't have a good way to dock them in their cars.Lire l'avis complet...

GREAT little GPS unit that is a must to have when travelling!

I have had a Garmin Nuvi GPS for years, but for less than the cost of a map update, I was able to buy this new Nuvi. It is so much better than my old Nuvi. It includes more streets, and even has altitude/elevation, which I enjoy. One downside for me...and it is a small one...is the voice that gives instructions. It is cold and almost annoying!! The other improvement I would like to see is being able to get directions to just a town, rather than requiring an exact address. Mapquest gives directions from town to town without requiring exact addresses. I wish Garmin would do the same.Lire l'avis complet...

Works fine, but it doesn't support traffic avoidance

For all features it has, the unit works fine. I wish it had the traffic avoidance feature.

Works well- simple to use-gets you there

Excellent, able to change my destination on the fly quickly while riding in my car. Costco's locations are supported so I can always gas up cheap. the unit is sturdy screen is bright. Good value but difficult for big fingers

The 40LM is a great value for the money. Several changes to the Garmin setup cause me problems, though.

In daytime display mode, secondary streets are hard to distinguish. Rather than the previous thin black lines on a white background, Garmin uses a gray lines that do not provide enough contrast. This makes the smaller roads harder to see.

The keyboad screen that is used to enter alphnumeric data (addresses etc) has been modified to add additional keys and the result is the individual keys are too small. Hitting the right letter can be difficult and take too much concentration. Too often, you will activate the adjoining key.

The zoom in-out buttons used to be on different parts of the display screen. With the 40 series, the zoom keys are close together in the upper right corner of the screen. Again, you have to really concentrate to depress the correct one. The slightest error of finger placement will depress the wrong key.

Nice unit, but there is a reason the premium grade units cost more.

The unit had all the basic features and was not much more expensive than lifetime updates would cost to add to my older unit (Nuvi 260).

The most recent update required adding a micro SD card or be limited to having only a region of the US, but not the entire lower 49 states. It wasn't clear whether it would leave the omitted region as it was before in the memory, or if the update would leave me without a map in that part of the US.
I got the card and then updated for the whole US.

Recently, I lent a friend my old Nuvi 260, until he got his own Nuvi 40LM. He said my old unit could find an obscure road that the new one couldn't. I had previously thought that the maps were equivalent.Lire l'avis complet...

Your easiest to use GPS

This is the most user friendly GPS device on the market. I like it much better than my Magellan. When it was stolen out of my truck I had to have another. This newer one shows speed limits on the highway and even elevation above sea level.Lire l'avis complet...

Good value, good display. No external volume control & hwy addresses weak.

It's a pretty nice unit. I use this for service calls. My biggest complaint is that there is no external dial or control for the volume. So when I get a phone call, I either have to unplug the gps or mess with the touch pad to navigate away from the map to the main menu where I then have to adjust the volume down. Not a good design IMO. I've had previous Garmins that had a volume control on the side which was great.
Another drawback is the software is very picky about names of highways. ie: If the address is 15000 IH N 35. The gps will not pick up on it. It's taken me several guesses to figure out what it is looking for. Now I know that IH N 35 is 35 Highway and Loop 1 is 1-loop (yes you have to put the hyphen in) but it was a pain figuring out what the GPS "called" the street. Using the official mailing address worked in my previous unit.
The display is nice and big and the volume is loud which is great when I want to listen to the radio at the same time. The voice navigation works well and it is quick to give you a new route when you take a short-cut for example.
I've been using this unit for a little over a month. I got a good deal on it so I can't complain too much, but will probably try to find one with an external volume control and put this one in my other truck.Lire l'avis complet...
