Best gps unit ever made

I have a gpsmap 64s and the 60csx. I understand why prople complain about the 64s. The 60csx is way easier to use. It has mostly the same features than newer versions. The battery life is very good. The precision is about the same than the newer models. With mapsource it is very easy to make a micro sd card for every application. I use 1 sd card for topo and another one for road maps. You can as well install every maps on one sd card but i find it easier to just switch the cards. Dont worry i would give my 64s a 5 star too. The last of the good Garmins

This is the last GPS model Garmin made that was useful for me. The battery contacts don.t last vey long, the power button won't either, but they work great when they are in good shape. It has some useless frills (I know when to fish and hunt, but thanks anyway) but still fundamentally tells me where I am, interacts with mapping programs, and doesn't have all junk (really, I didn't buy this thing to plot a cross-country mountain bike trip) the added to subsequent models. Garmin missed the big boat by becoming, like Trimble, too specialized for their own good. They have been left behind by the BYOD (Bring your own device) GPS companies and in my opinion have only one way of staying relevant - become one of the few iOS compatible survey grade GPS companies. But they won't. Listen Garmin- we need an affordable, GNSS device with 1-2 m accuracy that simply collects points or paths, has a decent screen and takes topo chips. Bluetooth to IOS would be nice. Ease of Use Makes This Unit a Winner

I had a 60CSx since when they came out. But lost it last year while on an Iowa deer hunt. Drove to a big retailer and bought a 64st to get through my hunt. I found myself cursing it daily. I kept picturing the engineering team at Garmin sitting at a big round table and some dope standing up stating "I have a great idea for the new model! Let's make the user push 5 buttons to do the same thing as the 60 CSx takes only 3 to do." It drove me crazy stumbling to my treestands in the dark while trying to navigate the ridiculous 64st screen. No thanks! I am a very patient person and write good reviews 90% of the time. But I have nothing good to say about the 64st other than it has more functions than the 60CSx. But that comes at a price, as I found it draining the batteries significantly faster. Great GPS. Must have City Maps DVD to search addresses

It works great. The only thing is if you plan on travelling with it, you have to get the City Maps DVD. If you register your GPS with Garmin, they'll give you 10% off your purchase of the DVD, making it $79 with shipping. They take forever to ship the DVD, but if you get the card, or download format of the City Maps, you can't get updates. You have to get the DVD. Then you will have the option of searching nearby services, food, etc. It will also give you the ability to search addresses, so it works much more like a car GPS. I use mine on my motorcycle, so I need to have the City Maps for nearby food, gas, services, and to search for addresses too.

Good GPS; Awful documentation

The Garmin 60CSx is well known, widely used, generally admired and completely reviewed by experts on numerous sites. After owning other GPS units, I think it is the best one for hiking and climbing in the Rocky Mountains. In rough, cold, dirty conditions, the push buttons are better than on-screen icons. The cost of Garmin's exclusive maps should be considered prior to purchase. The documentation is convoluted, difficult and unclear. It can be learned, but only with time, application, trial and error. Garmin should listen to the many complaints and re-write everything in an intuitive arrangement using standard English. The central problem is that the documentation describes the device from the perspective of an engineer - from capacities and features outward to processes and functions. That should be reversed, with the content organized around the needs of the user. The Owner's Manual has no FAQ. Nor is there a list of simple, clear, step-by-step instructions to do the things most owners want most often. The GPS is great for the outdoors, but only after a user fights through the awful documentation. Garmin should not be on the opposite side of a fight from its customers. I love my Garmin

First off I want to say I have used Garmin GPS units for many years. It started back with the GPS 12, through the Etrex series, on to the Oregon, and the latest was the GPSmap 64. Of all I have owned the 60csx is my favorite. I not saying the others are inferior, I'm saying I feel at home with the 60csx. As for accuracy, it's at the top of the list and very easy to find your way around the menus.
I worked for the Salt Lake County Surveyors department for over thirty years. Our job was to find old control points set out in the 1800's. In the valley, finding these point was easy, but as we moved up into the mountains surrounding Salt Lake City the work really slowed down. Thank god the GPS units came out. By using a Garmin 60csx we could find one point and then use the project waypoint menu, enter the azimuth and distance to locate the next point. Even in narrow canyons and pine forests we could get a signal and continue our search. The recovery work became much more productive and enjoyable.

For back country use, or even travelling by car or airplane, this is one of the best, if not the best, GPS units Garmin ever produced.

Does what it Does [GPS] great!

If you want fast response and a GREAT GPS, look no further. It does that great!
If you want fancy features, look elsewhere. But it does have some nice bells and whistles, all GPS related. [Magellan makes one that has a camera, an MP3 player, a voice reocrder, and even a flashlight. But the magellan is slow and it's antenna is weak. Plus, mine kept locking up.]

I can't compare it to any delorme product, but it compares very favorably to 2 magellans I have used. 400 map and triton 2000. I like it better than the vista I had, the rino 110, the GPS V and the emap. however, the eMap did have a really good basemap as I recall.
