Garmin GPS 48 GPS Receiver is ok.

The Garmin GPS 48 GPS Receiver is an excellent handheld GPS for the money. The manufacturer has installed many user-friendly features that make the first time buyer or the professional happy. They manufacturer has excellent customer service and many additional add-ons to make this unit an extremely versatile GPS to be used in town, on trips, hunting, fishing, cycling, hiking, four wheeling or camping.
Suggestion:
1. One of the best ways to protect investment is to purchase a Protective Case for this GPS. You can find a top of the in line protective case that protects while allowing full viewing and access to all the features of your GPS unit. See a variety of cases at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER1-COM_W0QQssPageNameZL2
2. Purchase cable accessories that allow you to upload or download maps and data from your GPS. Purchase a 12v auto charger so that you can always keep you unit charged before heading out cross-country. Purchase quality power and data cables at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER1-COM_W0QQssPageNameZL2
3. Purchase an Amplified External GPS Antenna for the unit. The internal antenna is ok but will become intermittent in high buildings, cloudy skies and stormy weather. Purchase a quality, high gain remote antenna. See specification on 28dB and 55dB GPS antenna at:

Old but good but short life expectancy

This model is my favorite handheld GPS of many despite being out of date for many years due to its ease of use. I own several newer models which are more accurate, have additional features and much better battery life, but none are as easy to use on the fly. Unfortunately many of this model fail soon after purchase and Garmin will no longer repair them at any price. Memory battery seems to be the Achilles heel at this point. Be sure you have a more modern backup on board, but still a great GPS until it craps out.Lire l'avis complet...

Just like the one I lost

These were a great, easy to use GPS in their time. They are a bit outdated today, but still very functional for those of us who had these as our 1st unit. I bought this because of my familiarity with this unit. I had previously owned one but lost it overboard. [They don't float] Their weak point is the non replaceable, non rechargeable memory battery. Once the "Low Memory Battery" warning appears, they will not hold anything in memory. They can still be used, but will not hold waypoints, routes etc. in memory once you shut it off. Generally the memory battery is only good for 10+/- years and most of these units are older than that.Lire l'avis complet...

Garmin GPS 48

The Garmin 48 is an excellent simple GPS. Its mapping functions are very primative, but it locks onto lat-lon as fast as newer and more complcated units. As I travel the ICW, all I want is to check my position with the GPS against my dead reckoning plot and my NOAA charts. This does as well as my Gpsmap 76csx for that. If you do not use charts, get the 76csx and a digital card. The internal battery on my old unit failed and Garmin wanted $90 to repair it. It was cheaper to buy a used one on ebay.Lire l'avis complet...

Garmin GPS 48 Receiver

Unit operates with accurate readings and recording of way points. Dounloaded manual is quite detailed and could have a little more first-time operator friendly. Frequent use and practice has helped in gaining more confidence in the operation of the reciever. Practice on land plotting way points helps before marine use. For an older unit, it performs quite well.Lire l'avis complet...

Garmin GPS 48

The item I thought was fantastic when I received it. It had never been used and looked great. However, when I turned it on it indicated memory battery low. Garmin no longer services the Garmin 48 and gave me no help with some one that could replace this internal battery. I am in process of ordering what I believe to be the internal battery and will have to solder it in myself when I get one. What I thought was going to be a great item has turned out not to be. I wanted it to replace my old GPS 48 that has a broken battery chamber. My recommendation is that if anyone gets an older GPS make sure the internal battery is active or that it is supported by the company it came from.Lire l'avis complet...
