Feeling Good, The New Mood Therapy

The book outlines techniques for recognizing problems of depression and then changing thought processes to deal with anxiety, panic, low self-esteem, guilt, etc. The author describes techniques of cognitive therapy to deal with many problems associated with depression without the use of drugs. In recognition of depressed people possibly needing antidepressant medications, he has an updated guide for consumers on antidepressant drugs which is very useful in learning about possible drug actions and side effects. I bought this book because it was recommended by a psychologist for working on depression and related problems. It contains self-tests and scoring for analyzing situations and behaviors that can result in or be caused by distorted thinking, It also teaches the reader how to recognize distorted thoughts and figure out ways to change that way of thinking to more realistic and positive thoughts. It is a very good book and Burns writes in an unpretentious and understandable style. Compared to other self-help books of this nature, it is much more detailed and has very helpful exercises, tables and charts. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to help themselves out of a depressed mood and possibly change behaviors to remain in a better mood without drugs.Lire l'avis complet...

Good value

A 700-page book for $4 is quite a good deal, especially such an important book. The text was a lot smaller than I'm used to reading, but it's expected of physical books from the 20th century. (I usually read on my Kindle.)Lire l'avis complet...

Small paperback, Lottsa Words

This was recommended by my therapy group.
I prefer a larger format and font. It's 20 years old and needs revamping. Edit heavily, make it 8"x10". Wordy stories of John and Marsha and what they should have said and thought.Lire l'avis complet...

Feeling good is a resource I hope we don’t benefit me and probably others.

The information in the book says that just reading the book can help with my mood. It is helping me identify areas in my thinking that need to be changed.

FEELING GOOD by David D. Burns

I first got a copy of this book in 2003 in Barnes and Noble and have read it at least 100 times in the last eight years! Why? Because everytime I read it I learn something vital and useful that pertains to my present curcumstances. Finally, I have a book that helps me understand exactly what im going through everyday! You dont need to go to Harvard or read an encyclopedia to get answers on how to succeed in life that are helpful and easy to read, you just need the right answers. It can be a person with a little bit of frustation at work, a student trying to fit in at school needing self esteem, ive been there. Or maybe a more serious problem like drug addiction or suicidal impulses and professional help would be highly recommended but this book would help speed your recovery. Some days I just need a tune up and other situations require a complete overhaul! I hope that makes sense, im feeling good and am not relying on people I look up to, or drugs and alchohol, or the stock market to give me an adrenaline rush and make me happy!
Alot of people dont know this book contains these nuggets of truth so they dont find them. And I think people are turned off by learning about thoughts and feelings because theres alot of teachers, scientist, philosophers, pop culture, and people on t.v. who all have their opinions and answers on how to deal with lifes curcumstances so its confusing and hard to know who to listen to. For every topic and issue on planet earth there are billions of books and magazines, internet, you name it- all kinds of messages out there. Some are helpful, encouraging, uplifting, and good for you are worth keeping and dont fizzle out over time. Like the Bible still the no. 1 best selling book of all time. The book Feeling Good has been around for more than two decades and is a best seller today among psychiatrist. I can learn how to deal with curcumstances and people in my life with this book or for example I can turn on you t.v. and watch "Jersey Shore", "Days Of Our Lives", "American Idol" and all those kinds of shows and their not gonna help me grow. I like American Idol as entertainment, but I dont judge my singing or looks the way Simon, Randy, and Paula judge the contestants. So its easy to measure your worth by other peoples approval and feel inferior or unattractive. The key isnt the show I watch but my own self approval. Because you must process an event in your mind and validate or believe that you are a "no good second rate" person before you can have an emotional response. You think negatively before you feel bad. Thats a cognition and sometimes those seem powerful and scary. With cognitive therapy you can modify that. As a teenager I had very low self esteem at school, seeing other kids enjoy themselves with all their new clothes, making friends & good grades all I wanted was to have friends and be somebody. I moved alot for city to city and a new school meant new people. But everywhere I went I didn't fit in. So self esteem is one of the things I learned how to modify with the tools in this book because its not based on looks, talent, or popularity. The first day I got it my life started winning. And now I deal with all the messages sent by poeple speaking, writing, t.v. radio and internet differently im not angry, frustrated, guilty, depressed, or anxious about whats going on in the world. Every now and then I pick up this book and flip to a chapter for a mental tune up. Thats my life and this is MY BIG REVIEW!
