"Haha! Look, the giant chicken is Boba Fett!"

Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Darkside was released December 22, 2009 on DVD. "Something" is the second installment in the Star Wars Parody Series and follows the story line of Empire Strikes Back. For fans of the Family Guy series this is the long awaited sequel to Blue Harvest which followed the New Hope story. With Chris as Luke, Lois as Leia, Peter as Han, and Stewie as Darth, the cast sets off in another Seth MacFarlane adventure.

Let's cover the good parts first. The best part of this fifty four minute movie is the animation. Any fan of Star Wars or Family Guy will appreciate how much work went into animating "Something". Added to this is the excellent John Williams musical score and MacFarlane at times copying Empire almost scene to scene and shot to shot. It's obvious that McFarlane and his team are fans, as is also obvious from his numerous Star Wars references in the regular series. The additions of Mort Goldman as Lando Calrissian and Ernie the giant chicken as Boba Fett were also nice touches. There's also some laugh out loud scenes like the Cookie Monster attacking Luke on Hoth. The writers taking shots at Empire's plot holes was also brilliant: "we're evacuating into outer space with literally infinite directions to flee however we have decided that our transports will head directly towards the fleet of Star Destroyers."

Now for the bad, or at least questionable. Carl, the convenience store manager, is a pretty annoying character to begin with and for me was a horrible choice as Yoda. The attack on Echo Base by the Imperial Walkers was also a big miss. Pregnant Walkers, Walkers wearing Crocs, no thanks, no thanks. Calling the Ion Cannon "giant boob nipple gun" was the saving grace of that sequence. Also, some of the profanity seemed forced, the racist jokes unneeded, and the homosexual theme is really getting tired. The DVD extras include commentary by Seth Macfarlane, among others, some table reads, and Family Guy Fact Ups which get pretty annoying pretty quickly.

Something, Something, Something Darkside is funny without a doubt. Macfarlane and his team did another great job bringing fans of Family Guy and Star Wars another movie. But with every laugh out loud line there's another line that just falls flat. "Something" is absolutely worth seeing but after watching it you get the feeling that it could have been so much better.

Worthwhile viewing for Star Wars or Family Guy fans

This sequel to "Blue Harvest" is, in most respects, as good as the first installment and I'm surprised that it went direct-to-DVD. Unfortunately, the creators seem to be losing enthusiasm for the project. The commentary feature doesn't provide a lot of insights, as the participants simply ramble, alledgedly under the influence of tequila.
Anyway, this was a worthwhile purchase, which is more than I can say about the recently released "Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade Of Cartoon Comedy". That DVD is, obviously, a dumping ground of gags that were too lame or so distasteful that they couldn't be used on Family Guy or his other programs.

Well done NOT AS BUT good as Blue Harvest BAD DVD pac

I am a long time, as of 2010 30 years, "Star Wars" collector. Fan of "Family Guy" since the ORIGINAL debut in 1999.

I have so been looking forward to this since the "Blue Harvest" episode aired in 2007 & the DVD release said they were going to do the Empire edition. Since Empire is the best of the 6 films.

VERY DISAPPOINTED this did NOT air on TV 1st. Should have. Just because it was straight to DVD being able to cuss did NOT mean they should have & did when not necessary.

Empire edition is well done but not quite as good as "Blue Harvest". Yoda fell flat. They could have done so much with Yoda. They did NOTHING on how the character speaks. They could have done all sorts of things with that.

WE DID NOT NEED JAMES WOODS.

You will never look at the Cookie Monster the same way again.

I was VERY DISAPPOINTED that they waited until Christmas week to release. Yes, I know for Christmas presents but I did NOT appreciate having to go out to VERY BUSY stores to purchase.

We know, from the extras, they will be doing a Jedi edition. I think we know what character choices they have for Meg. Jabba or the Rancor?

I did enjoy this Empire edition course getting Back to the Future at the end & Brian was right End of Empire Lando is wearing Han's clothes.

DVD package is POOR. No chapter search list. The little flyer in mine was packaged wrong & folded.

And, THESE HORRIBLE NEW DVD CASES WITH THE HOLES IN THEM. CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP.

Good extras on it though.

Not what I expected, but still worth keeping around...

Honestly, I expected this feature to be much funnier than it was, although I would not say I'm disappointed. I would have been disappointed if I had paid the $21.99 pricetag that I saw at FM, but I only paid about $13 a practically brand new DVD.
This movie features some of the same hilarious antics that are found in the Blue Harvest movie, only I feel like the material is too old to be the sole foundation for this movie.
Worth it... But probably disappointing if you were expecting something dangerously funny like the Stewie Movie.

S.S.S. Darkside

I bought this DVD because i saw the first episode on television, which is greatly superior to this one, the best jokes are the ones you have already seen on the series such as falling over and grabbing there leg and going "ahhh ssss ahhh ssss." or Peter saying to Chris that Robot Chicken is not a good show.
This film is quite good on its own and the commentary by the two Seth's and the producers is very very funny.

Well worth watching, buying??? ......? If you're a big Family Guy fan, yes, if not then it might not be worth it.

Family Guy Something Something Dark Side

Funny Super Fun DVD. I can't believe how funny this is. Like no other entertainment today. I can't believe it's been 30 years since Empire Strikes Back. Parody is dead-on. I'm 43 years old. I saw the original Star Wars in Flint, Michigan in 1977 was 11 or 12. Many 70's and 80's references. I'm surprised enthic and racist slurs got past censors. (I'm old enough to remember enthic slurs on TV in the early 70's on shows like Sanford and Son, All in the Family, Chico and the Man). If you are thinking about buying DVD-do it. I hope there are more to come. One last thing-there are super fun jokes in reference to Tom Selleck, Rocky IV, Rod Stewart. Star Trek (George Takai).Lire l'avis complet...

If you liked the first one, you should like this too

Well, if you liked the first one, I would suggest you check out this one also. I love Family Guy and Star Wars, so these "movies" are great. I have watched this 4 or 5 times, and it still has me laughing very hard. The language is there, so it isn't suited for kids, but nothing Family Guy related is. Personally, I think this one was better than the first. The laughs are there start to finish and I will be watching it plenty more times down the road.Lire l'avis complet...
