Close your eyes for this FALSTAFF!
This has to be one of the ugliest opera productions I've ever seen. Vocally, it's fine, especially the Nanetta and Fenton. But visually, it's gross. Verdi is ill-served by making his characters cartoonish. Bryn Terfel is Sir John, and he is as wide as he is tall. He isn't a contrast to Ford who's slighted sense of honor is made to look foolish. It's a comic opera, yes, but comedy doesn't need to coarse and garish.
I got to know this opera with the Zefferelli production which lived happily at the Met for years. Here, I'm OK if I keep my eyes closed, but then why have a DVD and not just a CD recording?
I'm happy this was at a bargain price.Lire l'avis complet...
