Crossroads '07: Overproduced but still worth a look

After owning Clapton's 1st Crossroads fest film from 2004, I couldn't wait to get his latest (2007) video. The 2004 film was a star-studded tribute to the blues genre with insightful interviews and cinematography designed to give one a feeling of actually being there, on stage, with the musicians. They became approachable, real people with a passion for the music and a heartfelt dedication to furthering the cause of treating drug and alcohol addiction.

Although the 2007 film was worthy in its own right, I couldn't help feeling that something was fundamentally missing. After watching it a couple of times, I realized it was over-produced, using too many tricky camera angles with choppy editing that relied on gimmickry rather than substance. Also, comedian Bill Murray, who hosted the event, was an obnoxious and unnecessary distraction. The 2007 didn't have and didn't need an M.C.

The acts were good, though the end turned into a free-for-all jam session that, for the most part, was disappointing. The blues genre got lost in the shuffle and some of the performances were flat. If I hadn't seen the 2004 film, I'm sure I would have liked it better.

In any event, It was worthwhile to see so many great blues and rock legends coming together for a worthy cause. And some of the performances were memorable.

Overall, if you are a music junkie or a musician like I am, you can't go wrong adding this one to your library.

Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007, Clapton and Winwood reunited once again!

I already had a copy of this item, Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007, but the second DVD was scratched somehow so I needed to purchase another copy of this great concert that has so many great musicians, in particular, great guitarist.
This Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007, and Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010, are in my opinion the two best Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festivals, which occur every three years.
I was able to get a very good version of this DVD concert for such a low price and I am so grateful that I now can see the end, Eric Clapton finishes this two day concert by being the second evening main attraction, with also the great Steve Winwood.
I needed to purchase another Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007 because just where I mentioned, the end of the two day event, my second DVD was somehow scratched and would freeze when it came to Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood playing together over a five song set.
Ironically, their appearance was so popular and fantastic that they decided to go on concert and they have a Blu Ray of this very limited concert.
Great purchase.

Timeless... Priceless... What More Could You Want !?

The downside of many filmed outdoor concerts are; the sound and the camera work. Sound wise, certain wavelengths seem to drift off into open space leaving random, aural gaps in the performances... and visually, the viewer is often forced to see the drummer or keyboardist while a great guitar solo is being masterfully pulled off on another part of the stage. But neither of those frustrations are at work on this DVD. It is almost perfect in presentation and editing, end to end.

Performance wise, everyone is at the top of their game. While Clapton, Winwood and Beck are always surefire iconic crowd pleasers, the inclusion of Sonny Landreth and John Mc Laughlin filled out an eclectic bill that covered almost every base imaginable on the Guitar God playing field. Being that she is more than likely the ex-girlfriend of half the line-up, its no surprise that Sheryl Crow showed up to sing a few numbers, herself.

I could write a small novel on how fantastic this concert is. While overwhelmingly entertaining, it also provides an ironic commentary on the state of today's dismal musical offerings. The 60s, 70s, and 80s gave us irreplaceable musical masterminds that will more than likely never be eclipsed.

BRAVO, ERIC !!!

Even better than 2004!!!

I was truly impressed by the first Crossroads DVD, but felt that something or someone was missing from the first one that should have been on that DVD. That someone was Jeff Beck. He's on this one now and it was an awesome performance! The reason I like live DVD's like this is that you get to see how talented and creative guitarists can be when they're onstage - no do overs like on the recordings. Among my favorite parts of the DVD is BB King's tribute to Eric Clapton and the part he played in the development and promotion of many artists who benefited from his help. Vince Gill's tribute also gives his insight into a man who is more than just a great guitar player.

Everyone on the DVD belongs there because they are all great in their own right. I loved how Derek Trucks got tons of playing time, both with his band (also played with his wife Susan Tedeschi - best husband and wife guitar team in my book) and as part of the backing bands and with Eric and the band for the prime time performance. My favorite performances in addition to the ones already mentioned include: Robert Randolph (who does not like this guy?); Vince Gill (lot of playing time for one of my personal favs); John McGlauglin (much, much better song than on the first Crossroads); John Mayer (I've seen Hendrix live but I must admit, I like Mayer better - I know, this is blasphemy); Doyle Bramhall II (good enough to make Clapton's stage band for the second time); Robbie Robertson (playin' Bo Didley like he did with "The Hawk" on The Last Waltz); BB King ('nuff said); Steve Winwood (Eric had been dying to play with him for so long and they finally got together here); and Buddy Guy (nice touch in having him close out the concert). Oh yeah, don't forget to see Bill Murray's memorable performance of G-L-O-R-I-A!!! Priceless!

The only way I think this could have been better is to have all 12 hours of performances on DVD. I'm sure there were many other performances that were worthy of including on the DVD. If you are a collector of music DVD's like I am, especially of excellent guitar players doing stuff live, you MUST have this one in your collection! Plus, you will be contributing to a worthy cause that is near and dear to the heart of Eric Clapton.

My music days go way back and Clapton has always been one of my favorite guitar players who has inspired my playing by what he does. But, as great a guitar player as he is, I am convinced that his heart for his fellow artists is even greater. Many favorite artists are remembered for their skill and music. Eric Clapton will be remembered by that, but I also believe the he will be remembered even more by his love for his fellow man. I've been blessed over these years to have seen this truly remarkable period in rock history that has spanned his career. I hope he has many more years doing what he is doing - so I can have many more great music DVD's!!! :) As BB King said in his toast to Eric Clapton, "May I live forever, but may you live forever and a day!"

My Ears are Smiling from the Ageless Virtuosity

I have never been prouder to be "old and gray" than when listening and watching this DVD. This two disc set by the royalty of the guitar world is just plain damn-good. If you saw this on PBS, in between pledge breaks, this version is way better, especially if you have Dolby 5.1 on your home entertainment system. The Mix is awesome. Seamless.

My personal favorites are Sonny Landreth and Hubert Sumlin. Auditory Viagra.

But hey there are just too many artist to comment on, and they are all good. This is all the guitar school you will ever need.

The only things that could make this package better would be a listing of the artist's equipment, you know: 57 Fender Strat, Gibson SG with PAF Humbuckers, how long they've owned it, etc. Basic Guitar Nerd Stuff.

The other thing it needs is a listing of the artist's backup musicians, for each performer. Like Hey, who was that guy who took that bass solo? Maybe its buried in the DVD's credits or extra material, but I haven't found it yet.

This is a RHINO Product, so the printed material and box are top notch.

OH LASTLY, Eric Clapton absolutely plays his ass off in this concert. The hairs on the back of your neck will stand up from the sheer ferocity and abandon of his playing, while standing there in bermuda shorts and a porters hat, looking like your old Grandpa at a bar-b-que.

Youth is Still Wasted on the Young, and your elders don't care if you respect them or not, because they can play, and you can't.

Eric Clapton - Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007

If you like listening to guitar music in general with a heavy emphasis on the blues, you will love this two disk dvd set. It has a good bit of Clapton with some of his blues buds, like Buddy Guy, BB King, Jimmy Vaughn, Sonny Landreth, Hubert Sumlin, and numerous others. Plus it has Jeff Beck, Robert Cray, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, and Steve Winwood. It also has Derek Trucks and his lovely, talented, wife Susan Tedeschi. This is a great addition to you guitar performance library. Worth the money it costs to get it. Mine came from a wonderfull, high quality seller in FL known as sassy10sgirl.Lire l'avis complet...

Eric Clapton - Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007 DVD

After watching a portion of this show on CATV, my wife said that she wished she would have seen the first part of the show. I immediately got up from the chair and logged into Ebay to see if it was available. Not only was it available, but I could purchase it right away along with another DVD - The Last Waltz with The Band - and get a break on the shipping cost.
Here is the beauty of Ebay - impuse buying of consumer goods and almost instant gratification without having to get bundled up in heavy winter clothing and go out shopping without any idea if you will find what you want to purchase.
The DVD is four hours long so we are going to set a time to sit down with popcorn and watch it all the way through - probably during a snow storm.
