Classic "sleeper" debut that set it off for one of the top music acts of the 1990s.

Jamiroquai's 1st album has them exploding right out of the starting block and firmly leaving their mark as one of the main proponents of the burgeoning UK-based "Acid-Jazz" movement that eventually took over what had previously been a US-dominated jazz/funk/R&B/soul scene from 1994-on (musically speaking, of course). Their sound heavily influenced by 70's "old-school" jazz and funk with ample touches of Australian didgeridoo and American-style hip-hop turntablism, I must say I've never heard anything quite like it back then or even today for that matter. Lively charismatic frontman/main songwriter Jay Kay was also at his most socially aware regarding the lyrics and, truth be told, hasn't reached that high a level since. Only thing that kept me from giving 'Emergency On Planet Earth' a genuine 5-star rating was their next two albums (1994's 'The Return Of The Space Cowboy' and 1996's 'Travelling Without Moving') being much more accomplished by comparison. Plus, the opening track When You Gonna Learn turns out to be an edited version of the original 1992 promo single (aka the "J.K. Mix") which has the complete didgeridoo intro and Toby Smith's extended keyboard passages as well. To put it bluntly, that rare 1992 mix should've been the one chosen instead and would've made an already great debut effort even greater in the long run.

For those looking to get into Jamiroquai "proper", start HERE and then work your way up to 1999's 'Synkronized' (UK version of the latter I consider 100% mandatory, same also goes for their 2nd and 3rd albums as well). Do take my word for it when I say their post-2000 material is an utter mixed bag in terms of overall quality and might not be to everyone's liking, so please keep that in mind when checking out that part of their back catalog!

Worth Every Penny

The lead singer of Jamiroquai (Jay Kay) is a poet. He has one of the most beautiful and unique voices on the planet and this cd (Emergency on Planet Earth)contains some of my favorite songs by this group. I listen to it constantly.Lire l'avis complet...

So funky

This cd completely surprised me, with the amount of awesome funk and jams. It gets me moving, sticks with me, and stays. Jamiroquai has been underrated-- they were pioneers in 1993, and still are.
