Good Title, Bad Game...

For those unfamiliar with the 1983 classic, Dirk the Daring journeys through a dangerous castle in hopes of rescuing the Princess Daphne from an evil dragon named Singe. That theme has not changed in the SNES remake of Dragon's Lair.

Unlike the cartoon-like laser-disc action of the arcade game, SNES Dragon's Lair is a side-scrolling adventure through the many rooms of Singe's Castle. While the concept was good, the graphics and gameplay fail to compare to even the most basic SNES game.

Some rooms require tedious jumps or extremely difficult timing between jumping and killing foes. If you're like me, you'll will become frustrated in the first couple of rooms as you sometimes appear to jump through some of the platforms. I will say this, the play control IS better than the NES version of Dragon's Lair, where it was nearly impossible to clear the first stage, but not much better.

The graphics are probably the most dissapointing aspect of the game. Unfortunately, many will start playing in hopes of seeing some of the stunning graphics from the original 1983 arcade masterpiece. Sorry to dissapoint your hopes, but it comes nowhere close. Still, trying to compare it to an arcade game quality is asking a bit much of a 16-bit system, but a lot of the scenes, enemies, and even the rooms look like they were thrown together at the last minute. Most characters look like cardboard cutouts and some still baffle me as to what they're supposed to be. For example, the scene selecting screen has a moving icon of Dirk's head on a pair of feet...??? Well, at least, that's what it looks like...

Even the sound is weak. A few sounds ripped from the original arcade game that are nothing more than Dirk going 'arghh' when he is hit. With only a handful of sounds to circulate through and bland background music, you'll find yourself turning down the volume soon after starting.

I don't like to go through a review without finding at least ONE positive thing to talk about. I will say that despite its many faults, this game does have some replay value on it. Hidden rooms and items to collect as well as save points throughout the castle help the challenge continue.

Overall, Dragon's Lair fans will be soarly dissapointed with the structure of this game. Even side-scrolling advenutre fans will find is so-so. This game wouldn't even be on the map if it didn't have a famous title attached to it. Unless you can get it cheap, save up for Dragon's Lair 3-D.
