Changed my health

About 10 years ago I checked this book out at my local library. I took notes which I still have today. It changed the way I think about food and it has stuck in my brain. I just bought a paperback copy so I can read it again. I had health issues and was on the borderline diabetic when I found this book. I wanted to reverse my diabetes before it became full-blown. Following this plan lowered my A1C dramatically and I lost weight. My doctor was amazed and asked what I did to make such a huge change in the A1C. Worked for me.Lire l'avis complet...

Cures type II diabetes? Light on practical menus.

Mostly sensible advice and guide for controlling and possibly eliminating type II diabetes. Dr. Barnard strongly recommends a very strict vegan diet, with emphasis on almost total elimination of fats, both animal and plant. Dr Barnard's writing is compelling, with clear explanations of why elimination of fats is so important. That is only one instance of his far-ranging explanation of the numerous health issues we diabetics face. The only reason I "dinged" his otherwise 5 star rating is because of his dietician's strange and mostly unavailable menu items. The doctor suggests mostly vegetables, all lightly processed and prepared with simple ingredients. But his dietician chooses mostly obscure items. For example, You might think cabbage would be used for slaw, and boiled or stuffed, but I found only one reference to it, and not in any of the suggested recipes. The doctor's suggestions seem doable and his dietician offers many interesting items, but you may want to use more conventional vegetables and grains in developing your menu items. Program is a Vegan Diet

The book mostly seems to promote a Vegan diet, which means no dairy, no animal products of any kind.

If you are planning to extremely change your eating habits to a Vegan diet and use his recipes, which are approximately 1/2 of the pages in the book, then this might be for you.

But for regular folks like me, the info I found helpful was info I can find without buying his book. Like info on vitamins and minerals that are found helpful for gaining control of diabetes. Things like magnesium, chromium, cinnamon and the like. His info was basic and not remarkable.

The title advertises a highly desirable outcome: Reversing Diabetes. But unless you go Vegan, you cannot even begin to move in the direction that he claims may reverse diabetes.

The book I have found to be EXCEPTIONALLY helpful and I would rate as "EXCELLENT" is: Your First Year With Diabetes, What to do, month by month by: Theresa Garnero. (It is sealed by the American Diabetes Association.) You can use it even if it's not your first year with diabetes. The information is helpful, scientific, directive, sensitively written. It has loads of helpful and pertinent information on all aspects of living with as well as getting better and in control of diabetes. The page layout makes for easy management of so much information. I use it almost daily and refer to it repeatedly for reference and ideas. I would choose it any day over Dr. Neal Barnard's book.

My two cents.

Alternatively

Dr. Barnard‘s book gives you the tools and resources in this book to help reverse diabetes.
It’s all in your diet.
My doctor just told me them now diabetic and wanted to give me pills for it. I decided not to and read Dr. Barnard‘s book and I’m going to follow his diet.
It’s a bad diet that got me there and it’ll be a good diet to get me out of it.

You can reverse diabetes with this lifestyle change!

Wow! This is a great book! My husbands fasting blood sugar went from an average of 350 to 120 in less than a month!!! His night sweats are greatly deminished, his eyesight is much better and his attitude has really gotten better. He still misses eating meat! But he feels so much better than he did it looks likes he can live with out it. I'm so glad I found this book. I'm eating vegan now too. We have both lost approximately 15 pounds, my blood pressure has gone down and I feel better too! Thank Dr. Neal Barnard! I tell people where ever I am about it, all my family and friends and I sent it out to all my friends on Facebook! If you have type II diabetes or think that you might have it... get this book! It can change your life. Every time I hear that someone died from diabetes complications it makes me sad, then I get mad. Doctors need to tell people to cut out the fat in their diets to put an end to Type II diabetes!Lire l'avis complet...

Type 2 Diabetes - there is hope through food!

I’m only 1/3 into the book, but it is written well and easy to understand thus far. I’m highlighting and using post-it’s for future references. I can’t wait to learn more about how my husband and I can change our diet and bodies for better health. Lire l'avis complet...

Amazing Book!!

This book is the very best. Everything you need at your fingertips. Anyone who does not agree, did not read the book from start to finish and are looking for a have the cake and eat it too situation. I was on Both high blood pressure and Diabetes medication. I am off both medications in less than a months time. I have also lost about 20 lbs. I feel great and have so much more energy. The Book is easy to understand. The book has 465 pages and 75 of those pages are recipes. Any one who does not think this it a great book after reading it, and does not want to seriously try it, does not want to get better. They rather just complain and just feel sorry for themselves.

I have three small grandchildren and another one on the way. I do not want to miss any part of life with them. Now after reading this book and being on the program I feel I will not miss anything. I feel Dr. Barnards book may just have saved my life. And I m good with that.

Another approach to living life as a diabetic. Strongly recommend.

I am a diabetic and am always looking for ways to re-think how to deal with this disease. The idea of having to give up the foods I love most, such as ice cream.... has been abhorrent to me. This book gives a different point of view of how to approach living life as a diabetic. Strongly recommend.Lire l'avis complet...

On Reversing Diabetes

I am a type 2 diabetic and mnaging my disease is important to me. The book was recommended to me by a friend. After reading her copy I decided I wanted my own copy.

After a month of following the principles as outlined in the book my blood glucose readings are down 12% and I have lost 14 pounds. I must admit I have not gone totally vegan yet. I still eat the occasional egg or have a small glass of skim milk. I am making the adjustment gradually so as to make it easier for me. Thenicest part for me is that I am now enjoying things like rice and pasta that I had given up completely.

I highly recommend this book for other diabetics. I had my Endocronoglist check the book out before I began using its principles. She approves of everything the book recommends doing.

Would I buy the book again? Absolutely and I have bout a copy for a friend who is diabetic as well.

Thanks,

John
