The Denon AH-D7000s offer a more balanced sound stage than the AH-D5000s...

The Denon AH-D7000 Ultra Reference Over-Ear Headphones are Denon's flagship headphone and are built using high-quality materials, including mahogany wood ear cups, leather head-band, and a audiophile-grade 7N OFC tangle-free headphone cable. Like other Denon headphones, these are closed-back, minimizing potential leakage, making them ideal for portable use or scenarios where sound leakage is a major factor. The D7000s are the only Denon headphone other than the AH-A100s to come in a high-quality luxurious storage box. They also have a standard, 1-year manufacturer warranty.

Although these share the same high-quality headphone cable as the AH-D5000s, these employ different drivers that result in a sensitivity rating of 108 dB vs. 106 dB (Denon AH-D5000). The overall sound stage is slightly more balanced than the AH-D5000, which has a polarizing effect -- some majorly prefer it due to its more refined highs and lows, while others feel that it is lacking the heartiness that the D5000s have.

If you have previously owned the AH-D2000s and really enjoy the sound signature that they have, I would recommend the vastly cheaper, AH-D5000s; however, if you felt that the D2000's bass was overwhelming and thought the overall sound was somewhat distorted, the AH-D7000s are a great choice.

Overall, the Denon AH-D7000s are still a somewhat expensive set of headphones considering that they do not benefit from use with a headphone amplifier as much as other more high impedance cans. They do offer one of the best sounds from a headphone that can be easily powered with a portable source, such as iPod or iPad, and have a extremely attractive and comfortable look and feel.

True reference quality

The Denon AH-D7000 is one of the best headphones I have ever heard. Maybe not for everybody these tend to be more of reference studio quality headphones. Which means Flat EQ response no bumps or filtering out unwanted frequencies that make a more appealing sound." Quality in is quality out" that is more true with the D7000 than any other model in the price range that claim reference/ studio quality. Now to the not for everybody part, a true studio reference set of headphones really appeal to very few which is especially true for reference systems with no EQ. These really brings out flaws in systems such as poor headphone amplification stages poor DAC usually found in poor systems like MP3 players computers TV's low -mid level home theater systems these are less forgiving.

That said, I enjoy these the most out of all my headphones that I own which include 1300.00 open back sets that require special amps. My open back set sounds great but the fact that they require special amps and give no privacy to others.

I own both the D2000 which I recommend the most and the D5000. Each model is either one step above or below the other model. The D2000 is one step below the D5000 in sound quality and build quality and the same in comfort they have plastic ear cups not wood ear cups. The D5000 is one step below the D7000 in sound quality and build quality and finish comfort is the same. The D7000 is above the D5000 with a finish that belongs in a high-end system. A glossy finish that not only looks great but also protects the wood cups from scratching easily also Denon is etched in the wood. A nice storage box that doubles as a presentation box. A true 1/4" plug not an adaptor because these are not really meant for travel. It takes an open back system in the same price range to equal its performance.

Best headphone ever!

The best headphone ever. Period.

I also own the Sennheiser HD-800 and HD-650, the Audeze LCD-XC, the AKG K701 and K702, the Fostex TH-900, the Denon AH-D7100, the Audio Technica W5000, and many others.

While some of the above headphones may excel better in one or two area, none of them comes close let alone beat the D7000 when it comes to giving a truly realistic portrayal of life music. That's how good the D7000 is, and it's a great pity it has been discontinued.

A top flight source and amplification is mandatory to bring out the magic of the D7000. Without properly being driven, preferably by amplifiers with pure Class-A biased circuitry, or when driven direct from source such as a MP3 player or iPod, they will only provide mediocre performance and some of the other headphones I mentioned above will out-perform the D7000. But when heard through a top end system, the D7000 will easily out-class all of the above. Even my wife, who is not an audiophile and don't know anything about headphones, agrees and can attest to this!
