by James Dickey

James Dickey's first novel Deliverance is about a canoe trip in rual northern Georgia, on the Cahulawassee River.

Deliverance the film was made with the same title in 1972, Starring; Jon Voight as Ed Gentry, Burt Reynolds as Lewis Medlock, Ned Beatty as Bobby Trippe, and Ronny Cox as Drew Ballinger.

The river is about to be dammed and, soon, the entire valley will be a lake. Four friends from suburbia Atlanta, through the hills they go, encountering primitive people and hazardous nature, fighting to survive and return to civilization.

An exciting adventure, two cultures in conflict: city fellas against country folk. Deep in the woods, remote, uncivilized, primal. The journey from innocence to experience.

Deliverance (1999, DVD)

I bought this movie because this movie is a classic in my generation. I had seen it several times, but my boyfriend had not, but knew the "Dueling Banjo" song, and even the "Squeal lke a little pig part".- We never got passed that scene.I warned him that is whas a VERY disturbing movie, but they have never prevented us from seeing them before.
This movie really is DISTURBING; One scene after another. There are points where I found myself saying, "What could possibly go wrong now?" And yet they did.
It starts out as 4 "average Joes", just going on a male-bonding weekend trip to go rafting on a river that was going to be built over shortly. It turns into the worst mistake of their lives.
This film has exceptional acting in it. Burt Reynolds was quite the looker in his day. Watching the bonus feature, I learned NO ONE would insure this movie because it was so dangerous to film, but the director was dedicated.
This movie is not for those that are faint of heart, or who have serious sensitivity to sexual violations of any kind or gore. Though this is not a "gory" movie such as the movies we have out now, (ie. "Hostile", all of "The Saws", "The Hills Have Eyes"). It shows exactly the right amount just to make you cringe for a moment.
The most craziest thing about this move, is that it was shot in a real, VERY rural, obviously inbred town. The people who live in this town are terrifying on their own! Most of these people are NOT actors!! SCARY!
I am a female age 25, and as I've said, seen it many times, maybe it's just one of those things where you like the feeling of tourchering yourself just to be scared? Any time I do watch it, I am on the seat of my couch, sometimes I even catch myself holding my breath even though I already know whats next!
If you are in between age 20-30, man-up and see if you can take it. It is always something to talk about, if nothing else.
Deliverance is a truely amazing story of the human will to live and persevere.
Not to mention the things we are capable of doing if our lives are at steak.

A timeless Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Four friends in two flimsy canoes navigate a river that they have just seen as a mark on a map.Lewis(Burt Reynolds)appears to be the leader of the group at the outset, but all that soon changes. Not only do they have to deal with the raging current of the river but things take a more sinister turn when they encounter some extremely unfriendly hillbillies with obligatory missing teeth and dungarees.Bobby(Ned Beatty)bears the brunt of their inbred tendencies and is literally made to 'squeal like a hog boy'in what has to be the most disturbing scene in the film.Just as the billies are lining up Ed(Jon Voigt)for similar treatment up pops Lewis and kills one of them with his bow & arrow. The other redneck makes off and the boys bury his friend's body in the woods. They decide to call it a day and get back on to the river. They encounter the worst raging torrent yet,and one of the canoes gets smashed and Drew(Ronnie Cox) gets smashed up by the rocks and is later found dead.Lewis is disabled by a compound fracture of the leg. They soon realise that the billy who ran off with the shotgun is now tracking them,so Ed(who previously was too scared to kill a deer)climbs the highest rockface you've ever seen and finally encounters the stalker and kills him.The film is masterful in it's portrayal of each man's change of character under stress and the scenery and river shots are both fascinating and breathtaking. The best and most light hearted part of the film for me was the famous 'Duelling Banjo's'scene. The bit where the old petrol pump attendant does his own version of a hoe-down to it is both memorable and hilarious. The music is fantastic. They don't make them like this any more.BrilliantLire l'avis complet...

Real horror

I loved this movie - though definitely not a girly or chick flick by any means.

So many people think of slasher and zombie movies as 'horror', but to me this is true horror as it was true to life of what it must be like to be in the hands of psychos and sociopaths and not only trying to survive but to also get away, especially when you are terrified out of your mind and injured to boot. Hard to take your eyes off Jon Voight. A++++Lire l'avis complet...

Great feature but not for young children.

I saw the movie when it was first released and I could not remember much about it. Read an article about it (recently). So, I bought a copy and it was a very good movie. Put it in my library.

What did happen on the Cahulawassee River?

What did happen on the Cahulawassee River???

Four Ordinary men in two canoes navigate a river they only know as a line on a map, taking on a wilderness they only think they understood.

Deliverance, surges with the urgency of masterful storytelling, like Georgia's Chattooga River along which it was shot. Equally masterful is the portrayal of each man's change of character under stress, harrowingly enacted by award winners Jon Voight,Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox. John Boorman director, set us on the knife-edge of survival- and draws us in with the irresistible force of a raging current.Lire l'avis complet...

Deliverance

Action. Adventure, in a style and quality of film that they just don’t make anymore! Excellent production regarding talent (prime Burt Reynolds stuff, with Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, Ed O’Neill, and Ronny Cox), photography (breath-taking cinema with river and landscape views shot in the mountains of northern Georgia), and suspense (one shocker after another!) in a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and surprise you in the end! If you have never seen Deliverance, you are missing one of the classics, and quite a few one-liners will go right over your head! Some sexual explicit photography and strong language may be offensive to some viewers.Lire l'avis complet...
