Metal Church THE DARK is ALL killer, no filler!

The drums are recorded perfectly in analog and the drummer Kirk Arrington has some of the coolest double bass and drum riffs of any metal record ever. Every cut on the record is perfectly thought out, with cool production effects added (like in the songs Western Alliance, Psycho, and The Dark). The twin guitars have cool solo and harmonic parts that will also remind you of your other favorite bands of the 80's. The bass parts are heavy - and it's cool to have the bass player and drummer hold down a whole thrash and metal timing with the mid-range of the guitars and growling screaming vocals over the top end. You gotta buy this Metal Church THE DARK album when you get a chance and blast it to start your day! Lire l'avis complet...

The Dark - Metal Church (1986) David Wayne (lead vocal)

In the sordid world of Heavy Metal rock 'n' roll, you have different strata of bands. The fine, rich topsoil which everyone can see and feel yields big names like Metallica, Kiss, and Black Sabbath. Just about everyone in the world knows at least one of their songs, and they are just a step away (and one notch heavier)from being "respectable" to the mainstream like AC/DC and Def Leppard.

Go one level below that, and you have a plethora of super groups like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Pantera, MegaDeth - huge acts that are rock solid in the minds of those who like their music loud and intense, but still largely undigested by the general populace.

Dig down to the third level, and you have acts like Dio and Danzig (maybe even a Cinderella), rock bands who stuck their head out of the sand for a week or two with one breakthrough hit in the charts before returning to their obscure depths for the remainder of their career.

It is in the next level where you find a group like METAL CHURCH, truly an "underground" heavy metal band. Many listeners who are well schooled in hard rock offerings have never even heard ONE song, and might not even recognize the name. If you enjoy your rock'n'roll sped up with an edge to it, then get your pickaxe and chip past all the dirt you've seen to find a true DIAMOND in the rough: Metal Church.

There really is only one lineup that you need recognize, and that is the original one (who also wrote the most notable songs): David Wayne on lead vocals, and Kurdt Vanderhoof and Craig Wells on guitars. And if you only listen to one Metal Church album, it needs to be this one: The Dark. Forget their debut...this is the only Metal Church CD that matters.

Is this album truly a perfect one? The answer is...no. It doesn't hold a candle to monster collections like Paranoid or even Danzig's first album. But in light of the fact that this underground act stayed under the radar for the entirety of their career and never had any airplay, this album does deserve a 5 out of 5. "Start the Fire" is as good a heavy metal song as any you will hear. "Watch the Children Play" is a ballad that holds its own with any other. And "Burial at Sea" is definitely NOT a throwaway, rich with theme and story and heavy riffs and outlandish vocals.

So, you want to listen to music that you want other people to recognize? Try the black album from Metallica. But if you want something new and still fresh that you can sink your teeth into? This is the "lost" CD for YOU.

DEFINES 1980s METAL

this CD, "The Dark" by Metal Church, though dwarfed somewhat at the time of its release by a spate of metal releases, has the ability to stand up over time as being one of the better ones from this time period (1986)...The Song "Watch the Children Pray" alone is worth the price of the entire disc, so though the other tracks may not be as epic or interesting, they are great examples of well-constructed thrash metal from the early period of such, nonethelessLire l'avis complet...

Must Have 80s Metal

I really bought this (again) for one song, "Watch The Children Prey" because it is one of my all time favorites, but after listening to the entire CD again, I was reminded that the entire album is excellent.

This is must have, REAL metal from the best music decade ever.
