A very cool look at the true Founding Father of Rock and Roll. John Lennon once said that if you wanted to give Rock a different name then you could have called it Chuck Berry - that is just how important Chuck is to the music we all grew up with. This video is great for its mix of "behind the scenes" as Keith Richards puts up with Chuck (who is not always the easy person to deal with) as they prep for the big birthday concert. It is so cool to watch Eric Clapton, Keith and Chuck practicing together. And then the concert itself is a wonderful celebration of so many classic songs from the early days of rock and roll music... Roll Over Beethoven and get ready to ROCK!!!!Lire l'avis complet...

A must-have for Rock and Roll lovers!
This dvd should be in the library of any lover of Rock music as Chuck Berry is one of the founding fathers of the genre. It can rightfully be said that Chuck is an egotistical, arrogant, pig-headed son of a bitch. But, it is also true that the man's talents as an originator, a songwriter, singer, and an articulate representative of the early days of Rock, make him a national treasure. That having been said, this is an indespensible showcase of the man and his guitar, on display, in both semi-private and public venues. Having gathered together with such luminaries as Keith Richards (who, for the most part, acted as Musical Director for this project),Eric Clapton, Etta James,Julian Lennon,Johnny Johnston,Chuck Leavell,Linda Ronstadt, and Steve Jordan, Chuck and his band are shown rehearsing for an upcoming concert that would be the setpiece for this dvd. In a club that Chuck had purchased years ago, and had renovated, he and the band are shown going through the songs to be played later that week before a few thousand rabid fans.Chuck, being the legendary control freak that he is,creates no shortage of fireworks behind the scenes. At one point, during the song "Carol", he and Keith almost go to blows over Chuck's insistence that the opening guitar riff be played a certain way, resulting in Keith approaching near melt-down stage. The great Etta James is not spared any mistreatment at Chuck's hand either, being brought in by Keith to perform another Berry hit, but,due to airline delays, was unable to get the time necessary for her to become familiar with the song prior to her first rehearsal with Chuck. His initial reaction to this (as yet unknown to Chuck)"new" singer's level of preparedness? He thought Keith was out of his mind to bring her in to play. His reaction, once she had a couple of cracks at the song and got more comfortable....he got down on his knees and gave her the classic"I'm not worthy" stance, letting her know how wrong he'd actually been about her talents and worth to the project. Also included in this film are several short clips with Director(and husband of Helen Mirren)Taylor Hackford and his production assistants, describing, in agonizing detail, their adventures with the star of this film, attempting to get him to honor his committments within the established timeframes agreed upon. Chuck, being the money addict he is, tried to beg off sevearal times when he was expected at various film shoots, and, when he finally did show up,demanded to be paid more for his time. This from a man who is notorious in the annals of rock music for being an extreme cheapskate. He is also a charming and articulate spokesman for ,and about, the history of the genre,as is well represented in several scenes. The actual concert itself is a ripper, with all of the artists playing at their best. It's great to see Chuck interacting with Ronstadt during"Living in the USA" and Jennon during"Johnny B. Goode" (who REALLY sounds like his father). An amusing side note...a day or two prior to filming this concert, Chuck did another show in a different town (unbeknownst to the film's director or the rest of the band)and shredded his vocal cords so badly that he had to go in and re-record all of his vocals for this concert in post-production. It is an amazing feat of over-dubbing, and the casual observer will never be able to tell that his live vocals were not live at all.You may not like Chuck's politics, but you can't ignore his talent.Lire l'avis complet...
All "Hail" this DVD!
This Taylor Hackford film continues to fascinate me each time I watch it. While Chuck Berry is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to use a phrase from the movie: "Everyone knows the music, but no one knows the man".
Rolling Stones lead guitarist Keith Richards has his hands full trying to keep up with the soon to be 60-year-old Chuck. By the end of the movie, Keith confesses, "He's (Berry) given me more headaches that Mick Jagger"!
You may have seen the theatrical version but the extra discs (up to three in the boxed set) will fill in the gaps on why tension was felt on the set. Those who were there cherished the time with this pioneer of rock, but they couldn't wait to leave him by the end of the production.
I also purchased the book "Brown Eyed Handsome Man - the Life and Troubled Times of Chuck Berry" by Bruce Pegg to find more about Berry's three stints in prison.
This DVD/book is a roller coaster ride that will leave you exhausted, but, with a smile on your face. "Hail, Hail Rock and Roll" again!Lire l'avis complet...

Hail Hail this DVD Set
I thoroughly loved this 2 DVD set, more on the second DVD than the first. I am a huge fan of both Berry & Richards but to be honest, Keefers drunken (mumbling) state sadden me as he put this band together to honor Berry, yet is plastered during DVD #1. Loved Steve Jordan and the incredible Johnny Johnson in the band. One gets an interesting look at a nervous Etta James and Berry who is initially not a fan of Etta, but is overcome by her talent. The narrator did a fabulous job of covering and recording this incredible 60th Birthday documentary for Chuck Berry. The DVD's contain some very enjoyable interviews, practice seesions, and concerts, plus footage covering Berry going to early haunts where he started. Worth the price of admission! Chuck Berry - Hail! Hail! Rock 'N' Roll (DVD, 2006, 2-D
Wonderful set. I caught some of this on TV and then just had to order a copy for me. Chuck Berry is so entertaining and can move, especially great at his age in this documentary. Plus you have performances by Etta James, Eric Clapton, and I saw a whole new side to Kieth Richards. Plus to see how open Chuck is about life is wonderful. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.Lire l'avis complet...

Hail, Hail Chuck Berry!!
While Hackford's film has it's share of flaws (the cutting from performance to interview derails much of the movie's momentum) the backstage passes are easily worth the price of admission. The bonus disc, replete with musician's banter, rehersals, and insider comments, are a true delight. The respect for Berry is evident, and warranted. And man oh man that duckwalk!Lire l'avis complet...
