Good little camera

The one outstanding feature is the lens with 14X optical zoom. It really comes in handy, but, don't expect SLR type clarity or precision. It works adequately. Most of the auto features work well, but take valuable time away from catching good shots. Retakes are a way of life with this camera.
The dark shots are still grainy, but better somewhat than with earlier Canon cameras. The well lit shots are nice and clear, but, I would have expected larger files than with my previous Canon powershot, since these are 14 megapixel instead of ten, but, they are smaller and thus, more compressed. This will cause quality issues with some photos.
The HD video is in Quicktime format but uses H264 compression. On brightly lit scenes, it's good and clear, but, the average lit room during the day turns out very grainy. Dark shots are really grainy. It's nice to be able to zoom during the video takes, but, I found the focus drifts between subjects if there are too many foreground and midground objects. Better use a "real" video camera if you are serious about your video.
Still shots were nice and clear, especially if the flash was necessary. The flash always seems like it's in the way, and most of the time when I turn on the camera, my finger blocks the flash door from opening. A real problem, in my opinion.
Manual mode works well, and has easy to use setting controls. Still, its response is slow.
I had a Powershot SD900 that failed. The lens drive system froze, so I ended up looking around and thought that this SX210 would be a good upgrade. But, though it takes larger pictures, the quality is not substantially better. However, the $250 price tag makes most of my objections go away.

Many pros... only one con...

The only thing I wouldn't recommend this camera for is "fast action" shooting. It's substantially slower than it's competitors; however, it's other features FAR outway that one characteristic!

Favorites: Low light shooting - 14x optical zoom - No distortion - HD video (low light is great here too) - Single color accent (fun and artsy photos) - Compact size

If you want a multi-purpose, compact, super zoom for fun and easy snap shots in various types of lighting, then this is a great camera for you!

love it

ordered this camera on ebay , i spent 299$ for the camera including some extra package which is totally worth the price. The camera has a nice design, heavy feel but small enough to fit into your pocket. love the long lens and HD video shot, its amazing how far the zoom can reach, it is not the best one yet but still a very good camera. The pop up flash is kind of on the way but its understandable why it is designed that way, because its kind of weird if the pop up flash is in the middle which is kind of weird for a point and shot camera, the pop up flash is on a side so when you zoom in extra, the flash can still reach, all you have to do is to get used to it. After all it is almost impossible to have everything is a little camera like SX 200 .I highly recommend this camera for anyone who wish to have a professional pocket one.Lire l'avis complet...

Canon PowerShot SX210 IS 14.1 Megapixel

love the simplicity of the camera; the fact that it's easy to navigate and very intuitive to use. Loved the colour availability (bought the purple).
The zoom in/out is awesome, the resolution of the pictures is great (14.1 megapixels is as good as it gets).
Not crazy about the fact that the batteries are re-chargeable even though the camera did come with the charger. I am planning to go to Europe and the electricity there is 240V so where am I going to plug the charger ?? Would have prefered regular disposable batteries any time.

comments on Canon Power Shot SX210 IS

Actually I have little time with the camera, in that I have seen that has a very good resolution, with very good image, good zoon, easy to use, consistent with good presentation skills, the battery lets you take enough photos, I just feel that the flash should be more practical when you remove it manually.Lire l'avis complet...

The camera I had been wanting

I have to admit, I bought two other cameras (less expensive)than this one and each time I realized the ones I bought were not the "ONE" I was looking for. This camera offers incredible specs and it's compact. I love the look, the functions, and it's size. The pop-up flash is not nearly as annoying as I thought it may be. Although w/o the flash on it sometimes will take a blurry picture especially if you are moving. Best to familarize yourself with it's different funtions and play with it to try things out. Love mine. Oh, one last thing for some reason my does make a little "noise" even when muted. It's like a ticking/reeling noise. Not sure if that's normal or not, but I have noticed it.Lire l'avis complet...

outstanding small camera

After using Nikon cameras and lenses for years, with all the hassle of traveling with multiple lenses and other equipment, I was looking for an easier to pack yet full featured camera with quality photos in mind. This camera was purchased to replace an identical one that was stolen at sea last month. The first one traveled throughout Italy, Mexico and Costa Rica and I have many quality images from those trips. Easy to pack, easy to use with many excellent shooting modes make this an ideal camera to travel with. Also excellent is the ease with which my wife and other non-photogs can learn to shoot decent photos. For a fixed lens, very portable camera the Canon can't be beat. Very satisfied with the interface, and software included.
I would strongly recommend carrying an extra battery or two for extended travels, and a very large memory card for any video expectations.
Ditto other reviewers regarding the pop-up flash, but once you've used this camera for a day or two, it's a non-issue. I pack this camera for constant access.

easy to use, hard to focus

This is a nice camera with many functions, compact and a very nice lens with multiple settings. It has a rechargeable battery and can easily be stored in a pocket. On the negative you have to be careful focusing. You must slowly depress the button until focuses then completely depress the button. This is not always easy and some pictures are not in focusLire l'avis complet...

SX210 IS - Great point and shoot even for a pro

I am an aspiring professional, and after researching for hours for the best point and shoot camera to suit my needs, I chose the SX210. It is a fantastic all-in-one camera with fantastic per-dollar performance. It gives you tons of functions, quality, and versatility while staying tiny. The zoom is a massive 14x for a camera that easily fits in your pocket and the images are not distorted much at all considering the huge focal range. Out of all the pocket cameras that can shoot 720p video, as of June 2010, this one has the best image quality out of them all. Sony wasn't as sharp, and Panasonic's image stabilization jerks the video scene a lot.

In conclusion, it is slower in taking photos than the Sony or panasonic equivalent models, and has no GPS feature. However, if you want the most quality out of your images for prints and video, buy this camera.

Here's a comparison that should really get the point across. I use a 5D Mark II, so I know quality when I see it. I make art photography of the highest technical standards, so I want a point and shoot that is GOOD and doesn't let me down in image quality. With this camera, I actually feel OK leaving my SLR at home on days when I can't bring it with me, since this camera does a great job with enough light. The G11 is the best image quality out of all point and shoot cameras, but if you want a balance of size, zoom, and features, this is your camera.

SX210 is an amazing camera

This has been my best camera purchase ever. I like to stick with Canon, and am glad I did with this one. It's highdef video is amazing and now I'm editing videos for my business. The still shooting is amazing too and my favorite feature is the triple shot. I put the camera on a tripod and get some cool shots using this, especially when you put three shots into a video.

What I don't like at all is the tiny zoom button. Canon used to have a nice knob for this that was so easy to zoom in and out. Now you have to fumble with a tiny button. WHY? It's also slow between photos... you have to wait several seconds in between shots and I was recently at a soccer game where David Beckham was right in front of me but I couldn't get a shot off because I had to wait for the last one to process.

But overall, this is a great camera... the zoom is very good and the quality of the shots are outstanding.
