Great camera but very different from a Point & Shoot

This is a very good camera but if you are moving up from the point and shoot realm, you'll have to get used to shooting in a very different way. I wasn't expecting such a change, and that threw me at first.

When I decided to move up from the point and shoots I've been using, I did a lot of research and narrowed it down to a few Canons and a few Nikons. I decided on the T1i because the kit I bought included an 18mm to 200mm IS lens. The length of this lens gives me almost as much "zoom" as my former P&S, and I like to be able to get close to things that I can't get to physically--across water, up in trees, etc. I do love this lens but it is heavy in comparison to the standard 18mm to 55mm kit lens. Luckily I have a tripod to use for evening and night shots. There is no way to hand-hold this lens when the exposure ends up being almost a second or more.

I had been used to framing shots with the LCD screen, which you can do on the T1i, but it's not quite as easy as it was on a point and shoot--and it eats up a LOT of battery power. So I had to begin using the viewfinder--which I hated at first, but I soon began to see its advantages, and now I like shooting that way.

Even though I was used to using the manual setting on my P&S, I had to take the time to really learn about exposure, aperture, ISO, f-stops, etc., in order to really take advantage of what this camera offers.

Initially I shot completely in Auto mode. The photos came out okay, but the colors were very, very pale and disappointing. Even when I tried to use the "picture modes", I was disappointed. With some research on the net, I found that there are ways to set up custom color options. The Canon manual is very WEAK in terms of teaching you about this. I HIGHLY suggest getting "Dave Busch's Canon EOS Rebel T1i/500D" to help you learn how to set up your own color choices.

The Busch book also helped me to understand the functioning of different types of lenses and to understand the various ways one can change ISO, f-stops, etc.

If you use the LCD to review your shots, you may need to do some test runs before you can get the LCD to accurately display the shots. I had taken some shots of sunflowers, and on the LCD, they looked underexposed, so I used the exposure compensation feature and increased them about a third or up higher. When I saw the actual shots after I uploaded them to my computer, the shots that looked underexposed on the LCD were actually correctly exposed, and the ones I increased were now overexposed. So I adjusted the brightness of the lcd up a bit and things now seem pretty accurate.

When I've gotten things right, I've taken some shots that really surprised me in their quality.

In conclusion, I would say that I am very happy with this camera, but the learning curve was higher than what I had been expecting to experience. At first I was frustrated, but with some more reading and with some helpful videos I found on Youtube, I have come to begin to really enjoy this camera.

Canon 500D is all the camera you need to get starting taking great photos!

Canon has they're own names for various functions but you learn them quick and the location of features on the camera are intuative and easy to find. Battery life is good but always carry a couple extra batteries with and digital camera. 15.1 MP is plenty of resolution for posting images online and printing in smaller formats. Great Low Cost Canon T-series DSLR That Shoots Video

If you are in the market for a basic digital SLR that also shoots simple 720 video, and are lucky enough to find one in good shape for a good price, snatch it up! The 500D (T1i ) is the first Canon EOS in the line of T-series that shoot video as well as stills. I have a 50D that gets set aside when I go on vacations because this versatile and low cost 500D does everything I need in a compact package. There's still nothing like the 40D, 50D and so on when you want more technical features, but the T1i can't be beat for value.Lire l'avis complet...

Canon EOS Rebel T1i/ 500D

Great camera without spending big bucks. Upgraded to it from an XSi to get higher megapixel rate and video feature. The best part is that all my XSi lenses and accessories fit this camera.

Great camera for the money!

While better DSLRs appeared in the marketplace since the T1i (500D) debuted, you cannot beat the value if you own one or pick one up second hand. It will accept your other Canon lenses, even vintage glass / metal lenses with a $10 adapter. Have you seen what Canon charges for a glass lens? I dunno about you, but to me having the ability to shoot spectacular photos and footage while keeping $3000 or more in your pocket is a good thing. If the 20fps limitation detracts you, I can tell you I stretched 720p footage (stock and filmed) to 1080 in the editor, and nobody notices. Likewise 1080 at 20fps can be interpolated by decent editors to create the missing frames. It is actually a feature, because if you do mostly web, your files will be smaller and faster to upload by a third, and that's your valuable time. I got my T1i as a backup / second camera, and I could not be happier with the purchase.Lire l'avis complet...

T1i is a GREAT camera

The Cannon T1i is a wonderful camera for the more serious than most in your family. It maintains a wonderful balance between picture quality and ease of use. The T1i is compatable with a wide range of lenses and filters. While the T1i is easy to use, to fully utilize the many features buyers should seriously consider taking a class or two at their local camera shop or Community College.

I have used my T1i in both macro photography and extreme telephoto lens use(650-2600mm)...it exceeded my expectations in both areas. The 15mp photo quality is almost an over kill as it allows a user to blow up a unpixelated high quality picture to a size that unless you are printing bill board signs, you'll never need.

The addition of the video capability is a wonderful surprise as well. While I would reccomend this as a bonus feature for those taking still pictures I would caution those wanting to primarily use the video functions over still photoagraphy that they may not be happy. If you are one of those who plans to shoot mostly movies, this may not be the camera for you. This is the first DSLR from Cannon with video capacity and as such, they may not have it perfected to the quality you will be happy with. If you are however like me and take primarily stills and just want to have the video ability as a bonus...this IS the camera for you.

The Cannon name is synonymous with durability and quality. It is a trusted name that has been around since 1937. All in all I highly reccomend this camera.

If you are a serious photographer, this camera is for you. If you are not a serious photographer, this camera will make you one.

Enjoy it fellow shutter bugs

Amazing and affordable!

The T1i is a wonderful camera. The images are clera. The shutter is rea;lly fast and the controls are easy to use.

I have been using mine for the last six moths tto take portraits on a professional level. Though I would recomend learning to use the cameras manual functions, even the automatic modes produce stunning images.Lire l'avis complet...

Good camera to learn, hobbyist use and some serious work.

Is not my first REBEL, so I got some experience. I mostly do sports photography for fans of a soccer team in my country.

The camera is pretty good. To fix some of the problems and get extra features I would recommend to install Magic Lantern, that will give you A LOT of new features and fix some of the quirks of the camera.

Please note that while this is a semi-pro camera is a different beast than a point and shot. In the beginning might be hard and frustrating, but if you practice you will learn how to use the power of the camera. Believe me, with time and discipline you will get really good pictures.

I personally prefer the viewfinder to the Live View (it was improved from previous versions). Viewfinder helps you concentrate on the picture, take a good posture. Is like being a sniper waiting for an objective.

If you like photography, want to learn, and have a small budget (because now this is an old model) I totally recommend you to get this. Some starter kids include a 18-55mm lens that are good for indoors, but you might want to invest in lens if you plant to do outdoor photography.

Consider, also, that once you start buying accessories for this camera those will work with most Canon DSLRs so in the future you will only have to invest in (Canon) bodies.

Good entry level camera, great photos, easy to use.

I had bought this camera for 2 reasons, first I wanted a good entry level DSLR as I am about to become a grandfather for the first time. Second it was about time I upgraded from my old canon 5mp point and shoot. About 20 years ago I had a canon AE1program SLR camera, and figured its time to go with the digital equivalent. I bought this camera used to save some money, and glad I did it is in good condition and everything works great. I am still learning all the functions and abilities of the camera so I won't comment on that aspect. I am really pleased with the photo quality, and ease of use. I am happy with this purchase and would buy it again.Lire l'avis complet...

Love the Eos Rebel T1I But be careful

I love this camera. However, the lenses sold in this kit are not digital they are analog, and can not be used with the video. I am still not quite sure what the difference is. So you have to purchase other lenses to take videos. Analog lenses are used for SLR cameras, not DSLR. They can be used with the DSLR, just not with certain features, like video. Also, lenses are not Canon Lenses, they are a cheaper brand. The live LCD is nice, but can only be used in certain settings, which if you don't know how to use those settings doesn't do you much good. Doesn't not work in Automatic mode. That was dissappointing. The large memory card is nice, but doesn't work in older computers.(HP Media Edition with Windows XP) I don't believe this Camera and Kit are the cheapest way to go. May want to check out different avenues. You get a lot of stuff, but not neccessarily needed or useful. I probably should have returened it, but was going on vacation and needed the camer to take pictures of the grandbabies. The camera is what I was looking for, I just need to get more lenses and learn more about the camera. I think it is going to be great, can't wait to start enjoying it.Lire l'avis complet...
