Handy Printer for Travel

The Canon BJC-80 is about the smallest inkjet portable printer around. It's an older technology but rugged and Canon still provides drivers for this parallel printer for newer Win OS. Slow printer and ink is costly but hey, for the convenience when traveling it's well worth it. I own several to make sure I always have one. Ink drying out is always a problem with this type printer. Just buy a new cartridge/print head combo and keep it wrapped until you need it. There are parallel printer-to-usb cords available if you need to connect to a USB port.Lire l'avis complet...

BJC-80 printer

I bought this printer to enhance my travel experiences. I do a lot of teaching out of town and frequently update my lesson plans to match my audience. This printer is small and very portable. Printer ink tanks are pretty easy to come by but the cartrige with the printhead is getting difficult to find. The printer does a fine job printing black and white even though the speed is nothing to brag about. I have not tried color pinting or purchased the scanner cartrige yet. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase. It does what I need it to do without a lot of fancy stuff to drag along. By the way, I have this connected to a new laptop and it worked without installing any printer drivers. I did have to determine which port I had it plugged into to direct the print to that port.Lire l'avis complet...

Canon BJC-50 / BJC-80 Compact Printers Two thumbs up!

I originally purchased this printer because the ink cartridges are incredibly easy to refill with any refill kit. No mess, no drilling tiny holes, no stoppers, no leaks! I already owned any HEAVILY USED a BJC-50 (also purchased on eBay) which uses the same ink cartridges.
I like the BJC-50 because it is portable, wireless, and runs for FIVE HOURS on its internal rechargeable battery. The BJC-50 does not, however, have a paper tray. The BJC-80 has a 45 sheet paper tray for incredible convenience.
Like the BJC-50, the BJC-80 can print via infrared (IrDA) connection which is beyond convenient. Just place ANY infrared device anywhere near the printer and you can print everything from quick draft-quality e-mails to PHOTO-QUALITY prints! Unlike the BJC-50, the BJC-80 does not have a battery and therefore must be plugged in to a wall outlet; it's perfect for using in the home as a networked printer for use by all the PCs in your home. I have five workstations in my home and EVERY ONE prints wirelessly to the BJC-80 using a wireless print server.
Some will tell you that the BJC-50/BJC-80 are not compatible with the latest version of Microsoft Windows (Windows 7 Ultimate). This is incorrect. Windows 7 (all versions) AUTOMATICALLY download the drivers for either (or in my case, both) printer(s).
I am incredibly impressed with the quality of prints from the BJC-50/BJC-80. It should be noted that these printers are built to be VERY compact, quiet and economical. They are NOT designed to be blindingly fast, and they are not. They print at a good clip, but not state-of-the-art FAST.

On The Road

Being on the road a lot I rely on my laptop and Google to find my way along the East coast. I know the places to stop and get food that have free WIFI so I map out my path and in the past I use to write everything down. I finally said there has got to be a better way so I went to my find-it-place, Ebay and started looking. When I hit the Canon BJC80 I stopped looking and started bidding. I was not disappointed with my find. I got the color and large black ink tanks but quickly found that the color printed well for the unit design but the larger black tank was the way to go. NO more writing down everything and with the wireless connection I could even print in my car when needed. I got the battery pack, another Ebay bid, and a few extra batteries and I have been going first class ever since. The other nice thing about the large black ink tank is that it is easy to refill. Unlike some ink tanks on larger printers that are hard to impossible to fill this one can be filled in about 20 seconds and you can print another 100 pages with no problem. I have filled it several times and it just keeps on going. The Canon BJC80 earns a gold star in my book.Lire l'avis complet...

BJC 80 Travel Printer

Pro: It is a great printer and very small. Print quality is excellent.

Cons: No USB port. You have to buy a parallel to USB converter.
In order for it to work quickly you have to disable bidirectional communications, and advanced features (Control Panel - Printers - Properties)otherwise there is a 5 minute delay before printing.Lire l'avis complet...

Canon BJC 80 InkJet Printer

I now own four of these printers and they are real work horses. They are portable printers so I do not advise that you use them as a primary or main printer. Since they are portable printers you can buy a battery adapter for them, though I have never used one. I use a cigarette adapter to plug the printer into the vehicle and print. Alternatively you could use an 110V AC car adapter and just plug the standard power cable into that, but the cigarette adapter is cheaper.

I own a business and use these printers to print reports for my clients while we are in the field. The only real downside is the fact you can only wire them on a parallel connection and most modern laptops no longer have a parallel port, but a $10 parallel to usb cable fixes that issue and is what we use. This printer also has an IR port to print wirelessly from your laptops IR port, or usb IR port if you laptop does not have one built in. I personally use the IR port to print but it can be confusing to setup and use, so I give my employees the parallel to usb cables for them to print with.

The printer prints around 100-150 sheets of black and white pages before the black cartage needs to be replaced, but they are under $5 each so it is not much of a hassle. We very rarely print color with these printers, but they do have excellent color quality. I would guess you can get around 50-75 color prints and 25-40 photo quality prints out of one color cartage, but I have not tested this. The color cartages are normally under $10 each. Some of my friends say the cartages can be refilled, but I have never tried this.

Also I currently use or have used this printer with Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home and Professional, Windows Vista Home Premium and Business, Windows 7 Home Premium and Ultimate, and Ubuntu 9.10 with absolutely no issues. The install is easy with the printer listed and installed without an internet connection on all those versions listed above except Windows 7. Windows 7 had to connect to Microsoft's Update Website to download the drivers. One of my employees swears this printer prints better on his Dell Mini with Ubuntu then it does on his Dell Laptop with Windows Vista. Looking at the prints, I am inclined to agree though I do not understand why.

One warning is that the ink will freeze if this printer is left out in the vehicle during the winter. After this happens normally you have to replace the cartages and print heads which typically cost around $40. However as long as they are used regularly and taken care of during the winter, I have not found the need to replace the print heads for any other reason. The oldest of my four printers has had the same print heads in it for five years now and still prints great.

I just wish Canon still made these printers as modern printers no longer seem to be built to this high of quality.

Better that HP portable

We have a flower wholesale, and print invoices on trucks, for us a brand new portable HP printer lasted barely 1 year after they went dead and at $400 each printer it was a blood drainer.
I tested two USED canon bjc 80 printers, they lasted almost 2 years (around 20 months) and they were $50 each, so decision was easy, no more HP.
Compatible with pocket pc and palm (palm print) we have not had problems with them.

Cannon BCJ 80 Printer

I bought this for the road because it's size. I was able to get a cable to convert
to USB because my laptop has no printer output. The item arrived very fast and was well packed with all the parts and CD plus an extra black print cartridge.
At first I had trouble with the laptop communicating with the printer but a quick check on the internet found that if I used the driver for the BCJ 85 instead of the BCJ 80 is worked perfect.

perfect no problems

works perfect, saves space, cost less than one hp cartridge.
prints on demand, clear colors, not noisy, easily refills ink, the ink cost less than most others, no complicated software to deal with, takes less memory to use and keeps computer free of unwanted files and the like, covers so dust is not an issue, can be put in laptop type carrying case for traveling or storage, paper jams are very few, on this particular one no paper jams yet, other model one bjc85 some jams, maybe rollers dirty?, dislikes are color cartridge somewhat small, not feasible if doing large color jobs, but the color is far better than most, so for time to time stuff in color, its great, keep for black and wite stuff, save the wear and tear on a expensive printer that might be dedicated to high end stuff like photos, and important docs, we keep it next to the real good printer and since it uses the parallel port, you can keep booth printers on one computer as long as the other one is usb or infered, this one can use inferred, but if connecting 2 printers use the cable on this one, just seems to not complicate things, over all it serves its use well.Lire l'avis complet...

This is a great printer that is excellent on the go!

I love everything about this printer. For one, it's a Canon which lets you know it's a great product. Its small and takes up a lot less room than a standard size printer. It is great for all desktops and laptops. It is also great for people who travel, cause you can put it in your laptop bag or luggage. The printing quality is also very good. This is just an all around great printer.Lire l'avis complet...
