Excellent lens!

What can one really say about one of the best full frame 200mm f/2.8 lenses on the market!? It is excellent!

This is an older lens and considerably less expensive than the current version which has all the bells and whistles but I don't really require IS (image stabilization), the nice Canon white color, etc. The optics are what counts and the glass in this lens is excellent!

My only minor quibble is the lack of a tripod mount ring; a little cheap but a minor item. An inexpensive Chinese tripod ring works just fine.

Original Canon 200mm f2.8 L is very sharp at f2.8

I've researched this lens for quite a while and Bob Atkins rated the lens highly as did his user community. Importantly, Bob Atkins said that the original Canon 200mm f2.8 L is optically identical to the Canon 200mm f2.8 L II. The former has an integral lens shade which I prefer. In addition, I've bought several new and used Canon EF lenses (7) and the older ones generally have the edge in clarity. I'm not sure if this is a manufacturing quality trend or the luck of the draw for my 7 lenses.
This 200mm copy is very sharp at f2.8, which is a main reason that I bought this prime lens. It is of course also sharp from f3.5 - f11 as one might expect given the excellent f2.8 performance. The difference between f2.8 and f8 is slight--a good thing. To my surprise, my superb manual focus Tamron SP 60 - 300 f3.8 - 5.4 (Model 23A) is very close in resolution at f8 to the Canon but the Canon 200 f2.8L has the edge in contrast. All things considered, the well built Canon 200mm f2.8 is sharp from f2.8 - f11, and an excellent lens for indoor sports or outdoor sports with limited lighting. The little forgotten lens that could...kick butt.

I am a lens snob. There, I said it. I began to shun zooms and own and carry only primes, sometimes five at a time. But I just couldn't get rid of my 70-200 f4 IS USM; I needed that reach.

Well, I borrowed this lens for an afternoon and immediately fell in love. I've had the 135 f2 for years, and it has become my go-to lens for walking around, especially for shooting festival events. I tried to like the 70-200, but the AF is pokey after using the 135, and the images just lacked that snap the 135 provided, even wide open.

This lens doesn't have those problems. If it focuses slower than the 135 it's only by a fraction of a second. And it's sharp at f2.8. I did a head shot from about 10 feet with the subject at a 30 degree angle from the focal plane. Near eye is sharp enough to count every eye lash, but her far eye was pleasantly soft. The AF is dead on, just like its little brother.

If you don't like to walk to frame your shots, or if you are in a hurry, or shoot lots of sports, then stick with the 70-200 or even the 28-300. If you can take your time and value sharpness at 100% zoom, then this lens will not disappoint you.Lire l'avis complet...

Great sharp, good-sized fast telephoto lens

I bought Canon 200 2.8L II because I wanted better telephoto lens for my Canon 60D camera.

I like: Size, Weight, Autofocus, Picture quality, 2.8 aperture.

I don't like: Old lens design from 1996 made for film cameras, Could be sharper wide open, IS could be helpful for such telephoto lens.

Overall: One of the best lens I ever had, could be better only if Canon redesign it and add IS, but after 70-200 IS II release I think they won't update 200 2.8L.Lire l'avis complet...

This lens is a very good build quality, superb optically. Image quality is very nice. Sharpness, contrast and colors are excellent. Focus works very fast, quiet and accurate. Flare is well controlled.
Especially bokeh appear amazing. F/2.8 at 200mm create a very sharp object while appear very nice background blur. This is one of the superb portrait lens.
The 200/2.8L II is light weight and nimble when in action handle (if the lack of zoom is acceptable).

Cons...

Excellent telephoto lens.

This is a legendary lens.
On par with the Canon 50mm f/1.2 L, 85mm f/1.2 L, 135mm f/2 L and 180mm f/3.5 macro L.
The whole series is incredible and the 200mm f/2.8 II L is no exception.

Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM Lens

A lightweight, stealthy alternative to a big white heavy 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Not white, not too big, lightening fast focus. The 70-200 f/2.8IS is a little soft wide open at the long end. This lens is much sharper. Pair it with a 1/4xTC and have a 280mm f/4 lens - the kenko pro dg teleconverter works great with this lens.

If you shoot a lot at this focal length, this lens is a real bargin. A great portrait lens on a full frame dSLR. If you shoot in good light only, consider the 70-200f/4L instead. it can be had on ebay for a great price, there are no bad copies of this lens, and you get a zoom. Canon's Best Kept Secret Lens

Canon L series lenses (their top of the line) are normally white and are very easy to pick out in a crowd. The EF 200mm f/2.8, however, is one of the few L series lenses that is compact and is black in color. Yet, the optics of this lens are superb and at f/2.8, it is plenty fast enough for sports and nature, yet nice and light for travel. The lens accepts 1.4x and 2x teleconverters and still has plenty of speed. The original series I version had a built-in lens hood, while the newer series II has a seperate hood. Perfect Lens for Some

This lens is just what you need if you desire near perfect IQ at this focal range. I sold a 70 200 F4 and replaced it with this fella and for me it is perfect for several reasons. For just a couple hundred more you get better Image Quality, Faster Max Aperture, and perhaps more important to me is that it is black and small. I do mostly travel photography and pulling out a long bright white lens in Varanasi India just made me feel like a loser. (maybe I am anyway, but I dont need the point rubbed home). 200mm zoom does not get better, faster, sharper...

...or anything for that matter. This is my absolute favorite telephoto lens. I love the clarity and zoom while it gives me the best color, fastest focus, superb speed at f/2.8. I cannot praise this lens enough... get it. If you findi it for a good price grab, punch for it, push people out of the way... it is that good! We have 2 photos on our stairs that I took at the San Diego zoo, a Peacock and an unusual flower. They are stunning and the color is fabulous. I love them both.
