Falls short of high-end cabinetry
Everyone has an idea of what they want in a kitchen cabinet. This book gives you an idea of what design parameters are out there, but only has space to show his technique. The kitchens pictured in the book have an "80's feel", which somewhat dates the book from a design standpoint. If you can overlook that, you might be able to find a few good deas; such as installation of cabinets. If you follow the book's advice exactly, the resulting cabinets are lower quality than what you find at Lowe's or Home Depot. The author produces "low cost" cabinets, but for a few more bucks in materials and time you can produce some very nice units.
Here are the things recommended by the author that I will incorporate into my cabinets:
1) Use of European hinges
2) Use of European adjustable cabinet legs
Here are the recommendations I will not adopt:
1) Use melamine for all shelves, drawers, and cabinet sides.
- looks 'cheap", IMHO. Use veneered panels instead.
2) Nails face frame through the front (exposed) face, then fills hole with wax stick
- pocket hole from the rear or biscuit joiner would be cleaner
3) On exposed face frame sides, drills holes, drives screws, then fills with wood puddy.
- again, pocket hole or biscuit would be better.
- wood puddy will always look like a dot.
- Use a wood plug instead, ANYTHING but wood puddy
Overall the style of the writing and the pictures in the presentation are fine. I'm sure the author sells lots of cabinets to people looking for low dollar units that are "good enough". If I'm going to build my own cabinets, they are going to be a lot better than good enough. The author's cabinets would be fine in my garage or a rental home, but NOT in my kitchen.
I got this book used, and after reviewing it I was glad I didn't pay full price. I will resell it, as it isn't worth keeping in my library. The free information and videos on the internet have as good or better advice than this book. Try Odo's book instead.Lire l'avis complet...
