Small jobs done handily
I recently had the rudder on my sailboat destroyed when I inadvertently ran aground in a shallow area of one of our local lakes. I live in a high mountain valley of the intermountain west. We sometimes have very unexpected high wind events that just seem to come out of nowhere. The original rudder that I built for my performance class Phantom, which is an iteration of the popular Sunfish class of sailboats, was a very very slender and narrow bladed rudder. I purposefully built and faired it that way to present less drag when in the water. Under Ideal conditions it worked as expected. However on the day that I experienced it's demise, I was on the lake doing some trolling under sail in an attempt to catch a few of the 3 lb. + rainbow trout that we catch there on a fairly regular basis. A huge wind blew up, and the rudder was unfortunately not broad enough at its tail to create the resistant force needed to successfully turn the boat to the necessary attitude to get it onto a reach, and I was hopelessly stuck in Irons. The boat was just blown backwards until it ran aground in a notorious shallow at the far eastern end of the lake. The new rudder is shaped with absolutely no regard for the infinitesimal few FPS, ( Feet per second), If that, which the slimmer rudder may have provided. But the need to keep wood and water at bay from one another requires a barrier coating of some sort, and find that fiberglass works well if applied properly. these kits when purchased at the local Walmart or auto supply run upwards of $15.00. Sometimes $20.00. So you can imagine my pleasure of locating a resource where they can be purchased for less than $10.00 delivered. There is just enough cloth, resin, and the needed hardener to do the job handily. Now the fish will just have to grow a bit larger while I complete the work!
