Being Human (DVD, 2010)

The film portrays the experience of a single human soul, portrayed by Williams, through various incarnations. Williams is the only common actor throughout the stories that span man's history on Earth.[2]

An attempt on director-screenwriter Bill Forsyth's part to depict by visual means the ordinariness of life throughout the ages, Being Human is deliberately slow in its pace in order to emphasize how slow life often is. The structure is one of vignette-like character studies of one man (actually at least four distinct men, all with the same soul) who keeps making the same relationships and mistakes throughout his lifetimes.

In the first incarnation, which appears to be an ancient Celt, a man's family is taken from him by raiders due to his cowardice and hesitation. Before his wife is taken away, she says, "Don't lose the children!"

The next incarnation is in Ancient Rome in which he, Hector, is a slave to a "foolish master" who loses his fortune and is compelled to commit suicide by his debtors and orders Hector to join him. Hector longed to be free to find the children and wife he had before he became a slave, but he has fallen in love with another slave and forgets his waiting family.

Third incarnation: He is a Scottish crusader on his way home to his children. The master from his life in Rome as a slave is now a crusader trying to decide to be a priest or not. They travel together until Hector finds his soul mate from the life in Rome. She is a widow and wishes Hector to join her family but his duties to the children in Scotland pull at him.

Fourth incarnation: Hector is finally forced to confront his capacity for cowardly indecision. He is a Portuguese man in the renaissance shipwrecked on the coast of Africa. He is the master in this life, his wife from the first incarnation shipwrecked with him as his spurned lover, and the raider who spirited her away is her steadfast friend.

Fifth incarnation: He is a modern man in New York, paying the consequences of cowardly indecision and gaining the strength to address the children he lost lifetimes ago. He is joined in this life by his master/slave/friend/soul mate, and former wife/lover and her husband/raider from life times past. They support him but are people who are trying to find their own way, just as in the past lives.

A Vampire and a Werewolf Decide to Rent a House 2gether

The first I had heard of this series is when the SyFy channel announced a new series premiering in January, "Being Human". When it comes to TV, especially sci-fi or fantasy, I get curious if it is really something worth watching or not. Doing some investigating on the internet I found out the series really isn't going to be "new"; just revamped and remade for the American audiences. The original, a BBC show. Liking other BBC shows like "Primeval", "Dr Who", etc. (I won't go into my thing for the movies like Little Dorrit and anything Jane Austen, LOL) right away I knew I needed to see the ORIGINAL.

The show is not for the sensitive viewer. I have to admit, I even many times thought "why did that have to throw that word in there?", "was that nude scene really necessary", etc. Not a show I would sit down and watch with my family, and only with a few select friends.

Okay, the negatives out of the way, the show itself is quite good. The three main characters form a unique friendship that is BECAUSE of their differences, not in spite of. Sounding like some awful childrens joke, we get the beginning of "okay, a vampire and a werewolf decide to rent a house together and meet a ghost along the way...". It sounds campy; it's anything but. It's a drama, with a good laugh here and there along the way.

After watching the first season, I immediately purchased the second and when the third is available I'll be in the e-bay line waiting for it. =) As for the American series, I'm going to give it a try but can't imagine liking it better than this original.

Overall, I'd say the series is very good. If giving it a rating for the viewing audience it would be "R"; definately for mature audiences only. Language, violence, and nudity.

Appropriately titled.

A great series for those who like British comedy along with drama. The premise of the series is putting a vampire, werewolf and ghost in the same household because they all agree they want to be as normal as possible. Watching the day to day struggles and temptations of these three friends trying to co-exist not only together but in their community while facing the obstacles of their own natures-good and bad and all that goes along with being supernatural beings.
I would give the series a PG13 rating only because there is some gore, off color language and sexual situations.
Being American, I have to admit that I don't always fully understand some of the humor. I've had to replay some dialog because of the quick British accents. But you soon get used to it. I personally like this series. My only critique would be it lags a little and the 'horror' scenes could use a little more depth.

Being Human BBC

My sister and I had been wanting to watch this series for some time, I bought season one and brought to her house....both our husbands watched too. We all were enthralled with these characters and their struggle to fit in. There is just the right amount of humor sprinkled in with all the drama. Great show!!!!!Lire l'avis complet...

Being Human - The British Series

There's always a good reason why Americans take a British movie/series/tv show and do their own copy' of it. However, they never do half as good a job as the Brits do. And this is a case in point. Don't bother watching the American version of this, get the British version. It's much grittier, captivating and engrossing than it's American copy cat, better acting, script-writing, camera work, soundtrack, scene location, even casting. I can't wait to get the second season. I'm lending this out to everyone I know.Lire l'avis complet...

Being Human

I started watching this show on BBC America halfway through the second season and got completely hooked. I just had to get season one to answer all my question and now I've got my husband hooked on the show too. Terrific show for anyone that likes horror, vampires, werewolves, ghost stories, etc. I love that they make these characters real people with real lives that are dealing with a terrible secret. Word of warning, this show is not for kids! Way too scary for kids plus sex, violence and quite a bit of gory stuff.Lire l'avis complet...

if you like true blood, give this a try

A vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost are sharing a home...sounds like a joke, but these supernatural roommates are doing their best to 'live' as everyday humans despite their various 'conditions' and the inconveniences that accompany them. It's interesting how hard they try to be 'normal' and to help each other despite their differences, even as others of their own kind try to discourage them from siding with the humans. As I said, if you like True Blood, you might like this.Lire l'avis complet...
