Sir Georg Solti at His Best.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has for many years been one of the most outstanding ensembles in the world. And why not, with the likes of Fritz Reiner and Georg Solti directing them? Solti was particularly adept at his interpretation of Beethoven, and he rises to the ultimate on this recording. The 7th Symphony has always been one of Beethoven's most popular. The quick movements are very dynamic and appealing, and the slower movement, full of pathos, has always captured the imagination of the public.
Solti and the CSO bring the utmost energy to these, and indeed, the entire symphony. The blasting horn notes in the first movement's Vivace are certain to command your attention.
The 8th symphony is quite small compared to Beethoven's other symphonies. Once again Solti and the CSO capture the composer's magic in the quick and slower movements. In my own admittedly amateurish opinion, Karl Bohm's rendition of these Beethoven masterpieces cannot hold a candle to this marvelous offering.
