Barbra Streisand - The TV Specials is a Must!!

If you enjoy a good voice, make that a great voice and a wonderful collage of interesting musical vignettes, then this Barbra Streisand - The Television Specials is a must! The picture, the sound and experience is in perfect harmony.
How can anyone emphasize the remarkable career this woman has mounted in the years which she became one of the greatest female singers of all time.
Barbra knows how to deliver a song and she knows what the people love to hear. "My Name is Barbra", sets the first offering of this wonderful TV telecast of 1965. She delights and prances around like a young school child and pours her heart out to the audience in various vignettes. "Color Me Barbra", televised in 1966 is in color and one of my favorites which follows. "The Belle of 14th Street", which is the first 1967 television special to feature guest-stars, and a marvelous showcase for such evergreens as Sophie Tucker's "Some of These Days." and the nostalgic and poignant, "I'm always Chasing Rainbows" and other song classics of that time.

I was fortunate enough to attend one of Barbra's concerts that appears in this 4th compilation. I was amazed at the astounding attendance of Barbra Streisand fans that showed up that evening on June 17, 1967. "A Happening in Central Park." to me, should remain a milestone in the archives of great concerts of our time. And, it is all here in this beautifully packaged 5 disc set.

The 5th and final compilation is a 1973 program featuring a multi-cultural musical potpourri which showcases Barbra's spectacular adventure into the world of musical instruments.
Barbra and 150 musicians play everything from the traditional violins, cellos, flutes and oboes to the more exotic kabuki woodblock sitar. It's really a great program and certainly one of the unique presentations Barbra has ever performed for T.V. Guest star, Ray Charles makes a brief appearance and sings with Barbra in a favorite duet called, "Crying Time."

When you see these 5 wonderfully televised programs, you will also witness Barbra's ability to perform as an actress and comedienne while making her move around the sound stage in various vignettes which she interprets in her usual and magnificent voice.

This is one of the greatest T.V. program compilations to be issued, not only for Barbra Streisand fans, but to everyone who loves good music and a great voice which is performed in a seemingly theatrical ambiance on stage and in concert.
P.S. Barbra also introduces each program and tells a short story about the specials before the program starts. This is a winner!!

Barbra Streisand "The TV Specials"

These are definitively the creme de le creme of Barbra Streisands Career. I am most impressed at the ease of her ability to take us on an exciting journey with every song, every note a bit stronger then soft and gentle as if you were living the words to her magic. I think that she has one of the most beautiful voices in the world and can easily be called a legend in her own time. no matter what anyone says about Barbra she was meant to be a Superstar, and that is why these five discs are so important, They were made when she was just beginning her career and into the seventies with "Other Musical Instruments" My personal favorite is "How does the wine taste?" Her demand for excellence is another reason to buy this set of timeless Television Specials.Lire l'avis complet...

1960's network television production at it's finest

Anyone that's old enough to remember Barbra Streisand's metoric rise to fame during the 1960's will enjoy jumping into this five disc time capsule of 60's network televison at it's finest. By 1965, Streisand was being applauded by Americans both young and old as being the greatest diva to come on the scene in many years. By 1965, she had created a stir that matched the intensity of Beatlemania. "My Name Is Barbra" is her first CBS televison special from April 1965, which ultimately won five Emmy Awards. In March 1966, millions of Americans went searching for a friend that owned a color televison set so that they could see Babs in full color for the first time. That special, entitled "Color Me Barbara" is a fond childhood memory of mine that completely equalled the artistic excellence and musical passion of her first award winning special. Rounding out the set is October 1967's "The Belle Of 14th Street", 1968's "A Happening In Central Park" live concert and 1973's "Barbara and Other Musical Instruments". But, I personally feel that the first two CBS specials from 65' and 66' are the real artistic gems. Two wonderful examples of 1960's television production at a time that there were only three major networks.
My only criticism of this set is the fact that there are no extras on the discs, such as photos, drawings, costumes, scripts, etc. Thus, I give it four stars out of five.

1st show "My Name is Barbra" is a performing MIRACLE !

Hi. I'm a poet, singer/songwriter/sculptor. I went to the museum of broadcasting here in NYC about 15 years ago to see the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and I was upset to find that I had to sit through Streisand's First TV Special first. I was shocked to discover that "My Name is Barbra" had the most incredible performance by a vocalist that I'd ever seen, male or female, and that still holds true to this day. The other specials are worth checking out but the first is what makes legends, and inspires the spirit like nothing else! Judy Garland, Sinatra, Nat King Cole can't touch her in this special. If there's a Berlin wall inside you that's keeping you from your dreams, trust me, it will fall when you see it!!!!!!!Lire l'avis complet...

Great addition to your Streisand collection!

I loved everything about this 5 DVD Streisand collection. If you are a TRUE Barbra Streisand fan, this is a must have colecters set. Of course I'm a very big fan of Bab's. My dogs name is FunnyGirl!!! That should speak for itself. If you get lucky enough to purchase this very entertaining set, Grab it. Also as mentioned if you are not a Striesand fan then, don't bother, or rent it. If you can find one to rent. Outstanding, entertaining, funny, witty, pure Babs at her best, even if they are remakes from years ago. I'll watch it again, and again.Lire l'avis complet...

Barbra Streisand - The Television Specials

How can one critique Ms. Streisand? Even to the untrained ear, her voice is exquisite. Back to her earliest recordings, she knows she is special. Her mature presence, command of the audience and God-given gifts are spectacular. Today, a very small number of performers are in her league. She set the standard for the standard. She likes perfection and is perfection.
Beautiful packaging, informative book included, great gift to give or get! Whatever the price, if you are a Streisand fan, you need this set.
