Very Satisfied With the Audio-Technica AT2020...Well Worth The Money!

A year ago I moved from a house that had wall to wall carpet into a house that has wall to wall ceramic tile. All the recordings I've made since being here (ceramic tile house) have sounded tinny and 'echoie' (sp), the floor really made a difference. I was using a GigaWare USB Stereo headset and mic or the mic on my Logitech C920 web cam.
After using the Audio-Technica AT2020 on a couple projects...the sound quality is great, much better than the many mics I've had before.
I bought it here on Ebay as a used product, had I known how good the sound quality would be, I would have gladly paid for a new one.
I'm really happy with the Audio-Technica AT2020

Great budget tube mic.

Well, I've slowly started to become disenchanted with dynamic mics, and so I decided to buy my own tube mic. The reviews said that this mic worked well, was made in the USA, and that it was a bit bright: it sounded perfect for my purposes. I needed a better vocal mic, and a mic to use on my recording cabinet along with my e609 (one of the few good dynamic instrument mics). I'm very pleased with the sound: bright, crisp, detailed, and responds to different distances.

Despite the fact that the preamp I ordered came with a bad power supply and I consequently am currently forced to use the phantom power on my computer interface (which is not really designed to be a stunning preamp), the mic sounds very clear and full. There isn't much warmth, but keep in mind I'm using a pre that is designed to supply power and nothing else; and then there's the fact that all the reviews I read said this mic was a bit bright, so if you're looking for warm, fat sounds, this mic is probably not the best choice. On my 1x12 guitar cabinet, I found that I like the mic about 4-5" away; from this distance it gives an bright, ambient sound that isn't as "in your face" as my e906 is, which really helps to make the guitar track fill out more when I pan. One thing I will say, though, is that this mic probably doesn't sound as "up front" as more expensive condensers, that is, it does sound a bit "spacey" or "distant" if you place it at a normal distance for a condenser, however, this mic doesn't get too bassy when placed relatively close to a source (4-5"), which sort of makes up for this "spacy sound," I guess.

All in all, this mic has an interesting sound for a condenser: people looking for a bright, snappy condenser that will give tracks a bit more "room to breathe" will love this unique-sounding mic.

AT-2020 usually outperforms NT1-A for about half the price.

I have owned this mic for about two years, bought used on ebay for approx. $100. This is not a professional mic, but for the money it is a very good buy and, in my opinion, outperforms some other more expensive (and higher rated) condenser mics that I own or have used. I have done home recording for several years, and I find this mic is worth having. I bought it as an alternative to my Rode NT1-A, a higher rated mic that generally costs about twice as much as the AT-2020. The Rode gives a hotter signal and is better for certain things; however, it routinely disappointed me when used for vocals (WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED FOR!) for its "too hot and clean" sterile signal that would also capture everything in the room that you don't want captured unless you turn it down too much to get a true signal. So, in comes the 2020 that I didn't expect much from, and WOW! It is not a U-87 (duh!), but I find myself going to it much more often for vocals than I do the NT1-A. It has a warmer quality than the NT1-A (although not quite tube or ribbon warm) while still giving you a pretty true and transparent signal. And it is nowhere near as tempermental as the Rode can be. Yes, I know you can mod the NT1-A's to get rid of its infamous issues, but we are talking bang for the buck here. Plus, the 2020 is built like a tank for durability. If I am recording acoustic guitar or piano for a clean signal with the highs emphasized or a lot of arpeggios in the playing that I want to isolate, I will probably go to the NT1-A before the 2020 (but not necessarily). But if I want warmer/fuller vocals, a warmer lower-profile rhythm guitar track (acoustic or miked amp), or a warmer room sound for piano or harmony vocals or the like, 9 out of 10 times I will probably go to the 2020 before the NT1-A (if I don't just use both, but we're talking A/B comparison here). I give it a 4/5 because it is not a perfect mic. If you want perfect, save up for the $2.5k-$10k range. But this mic far exceeds its price range, in my opinion.Lire l'avis complet...

The best solution for home studio

This is a great mic. I chose a long time a good microphone from a variety of different models and manufacturers. Specific criteria were:
1. Reasonable price; 2. Excellent sound quality.

I chose this mic from many other mics. And I'm very happy with that. This microphone offers a very clean sound. Very natural and clear voice on the recording is obtained with the microphone. The unique combination of reasonable prices and excellent quality. I recommend it.

Sergey. Russia.

PS I apologize for my English.

Big step up but make sure you have all the right equipment to go with it!

Definitely a big step up in quality from your in-built computer microphone. I bought this to record vocals and instruments - but be aware of the difference between this mic and the USB version. This one CANNOT be directly connected to your computer. You'll need an audio interface.

To get going, I had to also purchase an audio interface (the M-Audio FastTrack), a mic cable (make sure you have the right connections at each end - from your mic to the interface) and the usb cable that goes from the interface to the computer (will come with the audio interface usually, but if not you can use a printer cable).

Also make sure that you get an audio interface with PHANTOM POWER, otherwise your mic won't work.

Happy as hell with this Mic.

I love this mic -- super clear !! Just a note that it needs a 48v power source if not connected to a large sound board w/48v power. I bought this one : Neewer 1-Channel 48V Phantom Power Supply with Adapter. I am using it with a TC HELICON Voicelive Touch2. This is the mic you need -- buy it !!!Lire l'avis complet...

Great mic, easy to use and sounds reall good

I had bought the Samson Meteor USB one, and it worked good too, but I realized it is more of a mobile model, not as well designed from home studio use. So, I sent it back and got this one and I am glad I did. I also found the headphone control knob on the Meteor was so tiny it was hard to use. Not so with this one. I definitely recommend.Lire l'avis complet...

Very good studio condenser mic

Very good mic for the home studio. Not okay for live play because it easily picks up ambient noise, but for what I bought it for, it's very good. Nice highs, mids, and lows, plus it really defines background noise so it's easy to edit out. I'd rate it better than my old standby, the Shure 57, for acoustic guitar recording. Better than a thousand dollar mic? I don't know; I've never had one, but this will do the job.Lire l'avis complet...

Good mic, great value - no way to lose with this mic

This is a good mic for the price. It is light and had about a 51mm width - get a shock mount for sure. I think this is a very good value and whether you're getting your first mic or just wanted to try something different, like I did, you won't be disappointed for the price this is an excellent piece of kit.Lire l'avis complet...

Excellent In Multiple Ways

The AT2020 is infinitely superior to any low-to-mid end microphone and far more solidly built than most comparable models; indeed, one of the main problems with any tripod-and-microphone setup for use with a PC or laptop tends to be durability- not audio quality per se. The metal construction of this microphone's tripod alone will resist the kind of topical damage most often done, and while the microphone is thus considerably more heavy than, say, a Meteor or a CAD U37, it isn't so much so that it poses any inconvenience.

Unlike some microphones, its light (to indicate it is operational, that is, plugged in) also does not blink when recording- which is a real help for those annoyed by such models.
